I had never heard of OOTP until I got my daily Gamespot Daily PC Games News e-mail message just a week ago. They raved about OOTP. I have played Stat-o-Matic since I was a kid (I got my first card set in 1963! when I was 9!). I have played SOM's computer version but decided to give OOTP a try. I'm glad I did! After playing about 1/8 of the 1962 season, it beats SOM. I also like the ability to download the years I want (saves money and I don't need all those disks). I have also tried HighHeat 2002 (and other sports games like NHL 2000 and FIFA 1999) but for a 48 (soon to be 49)year old, they are too hard (carpal tunnel syndrome is only around the corner for me) and I can't beat my 15 year old nephew. I think I'll stick to text based games and OOTP especially.

A little off the subject: has anyone played the Championship Manager Soccer game? I've heard good things (and besides maybe I can beat my soccer playing nephew at that game!).

CM is an excellent game. I havent heard of anyone here who doesnt like it. I guess you could say its better and deeper than OOTP BUT CM also has 10 years under its belt. But if you are lookin for a great stat based game, CM is def a good choice.

also one more thing, i dont think you can play head to head in the game like in high heat for example. its similar to OOTP's style of play. you read the game unfold.

Yes. It's outstanding.

I am from Sweden and got a chance to see the World Series on TV, when the Twins won in in -90(?) against the Braves. Since I didn't understand the rules that well, I bought Earl Weaver and just studied games letting the computer manage both teams. I learned some of the tactics and was then hooked on baseball... Unfortunatley their is no baseball on TV here now, but I keep playing baseball on the computer (OOTP of course ).

By the way, Championship Manager has been and still is the #1 game for me. Soccer is the greatest game to me.

I still have the box and disks (somewhere) for Pure Stat! When it came out I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. I started up my fictional Continental League on Pure Stat for the C64 in 1988, and the same league (with some of the same players I invented back then, now in their late 30s and 40s) is running on OOTP4. I transitioned to Earl Weaver I and II after that first season, but still, Pure Stat was my first baseball sim.

The only real problems I remember were that only 3 stadiums came with the game, and it cost too much to buy the stadium disk, and the game didn't track stolen bases. So looking back at my CBL database, all the oldtimers have blanks in their stolen base records for 1988.

Wow...I had forgotten about that one and, yup, I played it, too. I vaguely remember the cover of it having an old style vacuum tube radio in brown with yellow piping....was the box even shaped like a radio?

Like every other text sim I've played, I loved that game...I've got to think that game was pre-1990, although I'm not sure the year.</strong><hr></blockquote>

Nah, it was a square box. I remember that you had a large card for each team with the stats on it for each player, very nice actually. I always had fun matching up historical teams vs. current ones.

I do beleive it was the first text based baseball game, heck it was the first PC baseball game of any type, to the best of my knowledge.

It dates to well before 1990, I was in college then! I've got to say it came out in the 1983-1985 range, I remember playing it when I was 13-14. I need to pull it out of the garage and check on it, the "current year" teams that came with the game would tell me its true age.

Too bad I don't have a 5.25" disk drive anymore! I'd like to get this game on my PC and see if I could run it, man talk about some nostalgia!
