PWBL September Excitement: 1951
The final week of the PWBL is upon us, with both leagues too close too call at this writing. The AL features a three team race with the Red Sox pacing the field, the New York Yankees a game back, and defending AL champs Philadelphia two games behind. The NL is led by the best team in PWBL history, the St. Louis Cardinals. Having won four consecutive pennants, two straight World Series, and three of four titles, the Cardinals are the clear favorites. Sitting just a game behind the pace are the upstart Pittsburgh Pirates who have turned completely around this season after finishing with the worst record in the NL in 1950.
The Red Sox are led by superstar LF Ted Williams who appears headed for his sixth consecutive AL MVP award, hitting .326 with 24 HR, 100 RBI, and 128 BB. The Sox are seeking their second PWBL title this year. ![]() The Bronx Bombers have led the PWBL for much of the season, featuring the best offense in the PWBL, led by on-base machine LF Charlie Keller and his .322 BA, 18 HR, 94 RBI, and .460 OBP. ![]() Despite ranking second in the PWBL in walks, the A's offense has been a disappointment this season. Thankfully for the A's, they have managed to stay competative all season long with a killer pitching staff headlined by Ewell Blackwell whose 23-10 record and 2.67 ERA in 300 IP have him poised to pick up his second consecutive AL Cy Young award. ![]() The powerhouse Cardinals have suffered through a trying season in '51. Star Stan Musial got off to a very sluggish start while ace starter Howie Pollet suffered a career ending injury on August 8'th. The red birds have shown why they are the most successful team in the PWBL, however, rebounding behind a great season from defending NL MVP Erv Dusak and his .325 BA, 17 HR, 96 RBI, 15 SB, and steady play at the keystone. ![]() The most surprising team in the PWBL's history, the 1951 Pirates have defied the odds and the predictions of doom from most observers to pull within one game of the mighty Cardinals. The Pirates have received truly stunning performances from converted reliever Al Gerhauser (25-6, 1.63 ERA in 303 IP) and rookie CF Willie Mays, whose .297 BA, 24 HR, 102 RBI, 38 SB, and sterling defense in center make him likely to become the first player in PWBL history to win both MVP and RoY in the same season. ![]() All season long these clubs have battled it out for the right to play in the World Series. Tonight, the fate of all four clubs is decided. Tune in at 8 PM PST for a game by game result!

With a victory over the Chicago Cubs, Giants starter Dave Koslo picks up his 30th victory on the final day of the season. Koslo finishes at a remarkable 30-7 with a 2.70 ERA over 333 IP with 25 complete games for a Giants squad that finished at 73-81.
A remarkable season and achievement from a remarkable pitcher.

Indians fail to score in the top half.
Ted Williams leads off against Warren Hacker: Williams pops out to center. One away. Monte Irvin against Hacker: Irvin flies out to right. Two down. Ken Keltner versus Hacker: Base-hit to left. Billy Goodman versus Hacker: Fly out to center to end the game. Tough way to end the season for the Red Sox. The New York Yankees have won the AL pennant for the third time in the history of the PWBL and will face the Cardinals, also for the third time. Congratulations to Yankees GM Jim Grimley.

Congrats to Jim and the team that shall not be named. I'm amazed I got as far as I did with my crappy pitching staff.
Next Year! |
