I apologize if this has been discussed before, but one thing that amazes me, is that OOTP came from the mind of a German. That is not meant to be an ethnic slur (many of my ancestors were German), but I think in Germany you would be hard pressed to find anyone who knew anything about baseball. I might be off on this, but we have a German foreign exchange student with us this year and she assures me that they know baseball like we know cricket.
It took much more than good programming skills to put this sim together. Anyway Markus, thanks for your sim of our sport, I'm having a blast.

He is very passionate and very skillful. An extremely gifted programmer, very quick and creative. He's gotten alot of good ideas and input.

I was born and raised in Germany. In 1979 (I was ten) we moved back to my parents home coutry, Bosnia. I lived in Germany again from 1993-1996. You could not really watch baseball in either one of those countries. The exception was the World Series which was usually carried live on some channel (which meant a sleepless night).
So even though I did not really have a chance to follow baseball regularly, I learned the rules by playing a C64 baseball game. I was interested ever since. Immigrating to the USA in 1996 made following baseball much easier. It helps to live in a baseball crazy town. I could also tell you about all the free tickets that I got from Mark McGwire during his 1998 record HR season, but that should be another topic. :-) I always joke that in order to become a US citizen you should know the baseball rules in general and the infield-fly rule in particular. :-) I understand that many Americans would not pass this test. A baseball crazy Bosnian. |

This remind me of those bad B-grade war movies where the nightwatch would challenge asking "who goes there" and if they didn't know the right password, would test to see if they were really Americans.
"If you're American then; Who won the last world series???!!!" "If you're American then; If there is a runner on first base with less than 2 outs...." |

Respect the Germans, boys: 80 million Germans (including my step-father) almost conquered the world once.

We get about 2 games per week live on TV, usually ESPN Sunday and Wednesday Night games.
I have been following MLB since 1995, and actually the first year I ever heard about baseball was in 1994 when a friend of mine brought a bat and a glove from his vaction in Florida. We started to play a little and I was addicted immediately. Well, that's how it all began! |

I didn't start this topic with any intent or desire that it would sink to nationalistic comments about WWI, WWII or any other war for that matter. If you guys want to discuss armed warfare I am sure there is a Board somewhere else that would be more appropriate.
I only brought this topic up because of how impressed I am with OOTP4, especially knowing that it was created by a person who grew up in a country where baseball is hardly the national past time. Even if I had the programming skills of Markus, I could not imagine how hard it would be to create a realistic simulation of German soccer that was loved by sophisticated German football fans. Danke, Markus.

When OOTP1 came out and I heard that the creator was from Germany, I was pretty surprised. Now I see Markus, as just Markus. A Great guy, and Great programmer! He knows more about baseball, then many here born in the States. He even sent me a "Yo" once. For a minute, I thought he was from Brooklyn.

Sorry, but history is history.
Besides my step-father being one of the 80 million, my German-born great-uncle was under house arrest in the US during both world wars as a security risk.

history is history, but that doesn't mean this is the forum to discuss it.
