I'm always up for a good Bayeux Tapestry reference.

When a sports joke makes you have to do research, I automatically think it was written by Dennis Miller.

The cartoonist here is English though and draws for English newspapers. The tapestry is well known in England (and France of course) as sort of basic foundation lore. Kinda like Paul Revere's ride from Boston to the countryside.

Speaking of 1066, though, y'know who else invaded England in 1066 after Edward the Confessor died without having sorted out the inheritance of the kingdom, aside from the French-ish Normans? The Vikings from Norway. Tonight could be interesting.

In 1066, the English defeated the Vikings, who invaded first, at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Not to be confused with the Stamford Bridge that Chelsea FC plays their home games at - different part of the country and the stadium was apparently not consciously named after the battle site, either.

Yes, I can turn ANY discussion into a history lesson. I'm great fun at the one party I was ever invited to.

My wife has her Master's Degree in Art History, and we have traveled extensively throughout Europe, to various galleries, cathedrals, and other sites.

This tapestry was pretty cool. Not as cool as the Book of Kells, in Dublin, but pretty cool.

The Tapestry (that is technically not a tapestry) will be on display in London for the next year, due to renovations to the museum it's housed in in France.

Also, in soccerball terms, Jude Bellingham is amazing. You can't convince me of anything less than that.

The Secret of Kells (2009) is a brilliant animation that does the Book of Kells justice - very much worth a watch.

OK. I will absolutely go find it. We were in AWE of the Book, when we were in Dublin.

Chances of this game becoming a classic are pretty low.

Pretty chippy, already.

Also, dirty play by the Argentinian player. Blocking a keeper from coming out, getting warned for it, and STILL doing it on the kick. Surprised he didn't get carded.

Fun Fact: the ref is from the MLS and has never led a game that Messi lost.

And the corrupt FIFA *loves* Messi.

Any more questions?

As undeniably corrupt as FIFA is, this is a pretty significant game for the ref to throw.

Hmmm...never seen that before, a half ending with a pending corner kick. They ALWAYS allow the kick.

I can tell you how Spain loses. Just do what Egypt, Switzerland, and now England did. Go into a defensive shell with a ton of time remaining, all while giving Argentina exclusive possession trying to run out the clock. That has not worked for anyone against Argentina this entire tournament.

Yeah, I know Switzerland was down a guy, still no excuse for that crap plan they had. Trying to get to penalty kicks not even midway through the 2nd half was stupid.
