Let's Talk about Perfect Drafts

I actually enjoy these - a fun way to field a brand new team and compete in a short tournament. And a fun way for new players to access PT and compete with players who have been around since week 0.

However...

Wouldn't it be nice to have a couple of PD tourneys where everyone gets the SAME options of cards?

I feel so ripped off when my perfect round is 4 RPs, Enos Slaughter, and Ripper Collins, then one of my diamond rounds is equally rough (think Hoyt Williams, Tubby Scales, etc.). Immediate disadvantage. Sure you might win a round or two on sheer luck (who hasn't had rounds where you are clearly the better team and you lose miserably?), but you have almost no chance to go all the way and you know it after your diamond picks.

Just curious if the idea that every team gets the same choice of cards has ever been considered. I get that it creates a homogenous set of teams for those who know the keys to winning, but is that really bad? I just feel like it's a series of lottery tickets the way it is right now, and that first drawing is the most critical because it determines your chances for the rest of the drawings. The same options of players at least levels the playing field.

it's been brought up many times as a consideration for things like PTMS/PTWC. but one: they want people to have to buy cards, and two, people want to use the cards they paid for, and three: it doesn't exist in terms of technology. i think it would be cool in specific circumstances though.

I think I might have confused you on my meaning. I was talking about perfect drafts, not perfect team.

All this time, I assumed that was how Perfect Draft worked already!

Yeah I'm a big dummy.

Those do exist in pop ups: Nico chooses a round where everyone gets the same cards. Hasn't been more than the first round or two though.

Hye, guys! Hope everyone is staying cool and ready to enjoy a great holiday weekend.

Yes, I've doen the same first round or others for some pop-up drafts. I'm actually working on some for the HR Derby and All-Star game right now. We don't put things like this in the regular schedule because it can get stale very quickly, but we like it for pop-ups so there's not a clear meta in how to build a roster.

One of the things we try to do is to create roster diversity, so that we don't have the same cards on every team. That was something that existed in PT overall when I first started working here, and we wanted to get away from that. Perfect Draft does that on its own, but we can cut the deck in many different ways to make it more interesting.

If you have any ideas or questions, please DM me. I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Also, I will set a round of PD as a prank too.

The option of same cards for everyone has the obvious flaw of team 1 scouting the draft and following up with team 2 min-maxing it.

For drafts that are pick 2: You could have an option to pick 1 and redraw to pick your 2nd card. Plus, once per draft, pick zero and redraw to pick 2.

I'd also like to see the first round be divided into 4 groups of 16 and a double round robin (30 games) to determine the final group of 16 which also play a double round robin. Instead of always single elimination matches.

Easy solution - bar players from entering the same tourneys with multiple teams. It's a little bit ridiculous that people can do this as it is. I'm all for folks having multiple teams, but submitting multiple teams for the same tourneys is where I draw the line and call it cheating.

even if you did that, as soon as a streamer streams it everyone knows.

People have friends and take turns being the scout.

To prevent cheating, everybody would need to draft at the same time the same round.

So instead of joining a tournament and then drafting it, it would not allow drafting until the start time of the tournament. Then everybody can join the draft and pick their first round. Instead of seeing the next round everybody would have to wait x seconds/minutes until it switches to the next round and so forth.

This brings me to another idea I still have floating around in my head. Faster tournaments/drafts. Like currently the tournaments take hours to complete. I think it would be more interesting/engaging if the whole thing would only last for like 20-30 minutes.

I wonder what you guys think about this?

Chris - I love both these ideas, for what it's worth.

Wouldn't be able to micro a tourney/draft if it's over in 25-30 minutes, for the subset of folks that like to manage during the tourney. But if it were possible for certain drafts/tourneys to incorporate these two ideas, people could opt for the current status quo or the new options.

Here I thought all along that everyone was drafting from the same set of cards? Why wouldn't it be that way? Why have a draft if we aren't drafting from the same group of players?

It's still fun either way I suppose

I love the idea of the drafts going quicker, especially since we are limited to the number of drafts we can be engaged with at a given time.

The same set: but each round doesn’t have the same players. It’s sampled from the overall populations of cards for each round.
