Mantilla BOS

Not the one but thanks for the reply. I do have this one and yes, he has the same rain jacket as the one I'm searching for. Here are other Red Sox players from the Vault that have that a large mysterious ball behind them. He is in a batting position with the same 'ball' in the background.

Felix Mantilla

I think this is it. In my collection, this is not labeled as a Vault image. I left it untouched.

Mantilla BOS

Correct, that's the image I remember seeing several years ago. I never downloaded it for some reason but always assumed it was a Topps Vault image because of the big yellow ball in the background? I can now add it to my existing Mantilla folder. Again, much appreciated. I hope that one day I can assist someone else in their search for images?

I listed a few Dan Osinski images that I need in the "Help Finding Photos" thread a few days ago

Topps Vault Folders

As this is a current topic on the site has anyone a definitive view on how images have been grouped into individual folders. Have they been randomly allocated to folders or is there evidence that each image in a folder is from the same year?

Thank you.

Has anyone located any more photos of Connie McGeehan?

It looks like some sort of dome building to me maybe

Topps Vault Folders

I personally have my Topps Vault Folders in alphabetical order. An AB - AZ Folder which has all Folders beginning with A, a BA - BZ Folder which has all Folders beginning with B etc. In each alphabet letter Folder, I have an AB - AZ Folder for BAL, then one for BOS through WAS etc. All other players on other teams remain in the AB - AZ Folder. Each team Folder has the Vault images for those players on the team for the years 1957 - 1966. If the player is not on that team in those years it remains in the individual AB - AZ Folder. I do not do teams after 1966 or before 1957.Hope this is understandable.

The Sun or the Moon

My first thought when I saw this object on the Topps Vault images was either the sun or the moon, but my science class told me otherwise as neither the sun nor the moon would set in broad daylight. Spring Training I assume in Florida for the Bosox and Florida the Orange capital of the world? Thanks for your history lesson in the world of Baseball images.

To clarify: The Topps Vault folders are NOT organized. They weren't intended for public visibility but one of our banned former members went in and soon any practical use as an image storage site for and by Topps was lost.

You can assume if you see two or more images of player A with team B that they're from the same year - but that's just an accident. These "folders" were filled up literally in the order images were grabbed out of the filing cabinets on Whitehall Street in New York and scanned. Thus you have loose alphabetical and chronological order, but not reliably so. Literally the instructions were "sell these few million images on eBay."

Two rules of thumb for newcomers: the Topps filing system largely broke down after the letter "T." Players with last names starting later in the alphabet were in the files and so in the auctions, but my inspections of the files as they began to be sold off starting 20 years ago showed at least 50% of the U-V-W-Y-Z names were completely missing.

The second note is about dating the photos based on the color quality. Something horrific happened to virtually all of Topps' photo-positives after the 1965 baseball season. They began to turn brown or orange/red. There are exceptions but if a vintage negative has correct vivid colors it was shot in 1966 or later. If it's beginning to look sepia-ish it's from '65 or before. This must've happened like a dinosaur extinction event because you can see the "browning" on lots of photos published on Topps cards in 1966-67.

Felix Mantilla is actually a pretty good example of this because we have other well-documented time references in the images. The Red Sox held spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona, through 1965 - then moved to Winter Haven, Florida in 1966. So the spoiled Mantilla images are from 1964 and 1965, and the good ones are from Florida - and show that crazy citrus dome - from 1966. Mantilla was traded to Houston at the end of spring training 1966 (for whatever reason it does not look like Topps photographed the Red Sox in spring training 1964).

By the way I attended a spring training game at Winter Haven in 1972 and not only was that dome out behind left field but the stadium was in the middle of active orange groves. The Red Sox literally drew more fruit flies than fans and there were at least two bug spray concession stands in the back next to the refreshment counters.

Thanks for the confirmation about the lack of organisation in respect of the topps vault folders and the circumstances that such an invaluable source was to all intents and purposes lost.

Additionally thank you for the steer in respect of the excellent source photos used for the 1963 Post Card series.

Walt Irwin

Any good photos of Walt Irwin? He played for the Cardinals in 1921.

Steve Barber Topps Vault BAL

Here are the Steve Barber Vault Images I have for my 1963 Orioles. I finished my 1963 Red Sox folder and I thank the community for helping me complete the 1963 Red Sox team with missing numbers. I am now working on the 1963 Orioles, and I am missing a few Vault numbers. Any help again would be appreciated.

Say, BBBDays, do you have the link to the Chicago Collection main array? I've lost it and cannot for the life of me figure out how to get back to their page with the thumbnails of all their pre-WWI Images. Many thanks
