Cards news: Sept. 24 -- Abdominal strain will end season for J.D. Gonzalez

The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that catcher J.D. Gonzalez will miss the remainder of the regular season after suffering a strained abdominal muscle during an 8-7 12-inning victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sept. 23.
The injury is expect to sideline the 29-year-old for up to three weeks.
In 125 games/109 starts this season, Gonzalez has hit .247 with 16 home runs and 65 RBIs.

MLB news: Sept. 25 -- Royals are first AL to punch playoff ticket

Despite not playing on Sept. 25, the Kansas City Royals have learned they are assured a place in the American League Playoffs.
The Royals (90-66) own the best record in the American League and sit atop its Central Division with a five-game advantage over the Detroit Tigers with six contests left on the schedule.
Kansas City leads the AL West-leading Houston Astros by three games for the top mark in the American League.
This will be the third consecutive playoff appearance for Kansas City.
The Royals were in the World Series a year ago, falling to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Kansas City's last World Series win was in 2015, topping the New York Mets.

MLB news: Sept. 25 -- Padres end four-year postseason drought

The San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Sept. 24 to earn their first trip to the postseason since 2031.
San Diego (85-72) already knows it will be playing as a wild card as the Colorado Rockies already have clinched the National League West Division title.
The Rockies sit at 91-65, 6.5 games ahead of the Padres with five games left on the schedule.
San Diego last reached the World Series in 1998, when it lost to the New York Yankees.
The Padres have never won the World Series.

MLB news: Sept. 26 -- Phillies wrap up NL East title

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-7 on Sept. 26 to wrap up the championship of the National League East Division.
The Phillies (94-63) sit 5.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the division with five games remaining in the regular season.
Philadelphia owns the best record in Major League Baseball, two games better than the Colorado Rockies in the National League and four games in front of the Kansas City Royals in the American League.
The division title and playoff berth is the second in a row for the Phillies.
They last reached the World Series in 2022, losing to the Houston Astros.
A 2009 World Series victory over the New York Yankees delivered them their last championship.

Following an 7-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, the Seattle Mariners know they will part of the American League playoffs but their role has yet to be determined.
Owners of a 90-69 record, the Mariners are two-games ahead of the Houston Astros in the American League West Division with two games left in the regular season.
Seattle also trails the Kansas City Royals by two games for the top mark in the AL.
The postseason berth is the first for Seattle since 2030.
The Mariners defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2028 World Series in their lone appearance in the Fall Classic.

With a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago Cubs puts the wraps on the National League Central Division title and their third straight trip to the playoffs.
At 84-75, the Cubs lead the Pittsburgh Pirates by five games in the NL Central with three games left.
The Cubs already know they'll be playing in the wild-card round as the No. 3 seed as both the NL East (Philadelphia) and NL West (Colorado) winners are guaranteed to both finish with better records.
Chicago's last World Series appearance came back in 2016 when it ended a century-long title drought by defeating the Cleveland Indians in seven games.

With a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, the Houston Astros have earned a playoff berth for the third straight season.
Owners of an 89-71 record, the Astros still have a shot at a share of the American League West Division title as they trail the first-place Seattle Mariners by two games with two games left on the schedule.
Houston last reached the World Series in 2022, when it defeated the Philadelphia Phillies.

MLB news: Sept. 29 -- Dodgers earn fourth consecutive playoff berth

With a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their fourth straight appearance in the National League playoffs.
The win improved the Dodgers to 83-77, good for third place in the National West Division, 12 games behind the first-place Colorado Rockies.
This will be the third consecutive season the Dodgers have qualified as a wild card.
Their last World Series appearance came in 2033, when they lost to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Los Angeles has not won it all since a 2024 victory over the New York Yankees.
