Sens were the better team tonight. They had to have 5 or 6 that hit the post.

This is what I found for an official explanation.

Rule 83.1 of the NHL rulebook states in part: "A player controlling the puck who shall cross the line ahead of the puck shall not be considered 'off-side,' provided he had possession and control of the puck with his stick prior to both skates completely crossing the leading edge of the blue line."

Not sure what the difference is between possession and control.

Because the Hurricanes scored with the Senators on a delayed penalty, Carolina was still in line to receive the penalty after the disallowed goal.

That call was made with reference to Rule 38.7 of the NHL rulebook, which states in part: "If one or more penalties (minor or major) are assessed between the time of the missed infraction and the video review that disallows the apparent goal, the offending team(s) (and responsible Player(s)) will still be required to serve the penalty(ies) identified and assessed, and the time of the penalty(ies) will be recorded as the time at which the play should have been stopped for the missed infraction."

But this call wasn't just a regular penalty, as the referees determined that Jordan Martinook had a clear scoring chance taken away and awarded the Hurricanes forward a penalty shot.

Whole thing was confusing. If I'm caught w/a kilo of coke, am I going to argue in court, "Yeah I was in possession of it, but I wasn't controlling it."?

And the whole thing has "tuck rule" fiasco written all over it. If the police do an illegal search, no matter what evidence they find that proves my guilt they can't use it against me in court. "Fruit from the poisonous tree". So if they are "resetting" the game back to the time the offside took place, I don't know why the rule book would be written to allow the penalty to stand.

The amount of penalties and rough stuff after the whistle in pretty much every game is incredible. I think most teams are mimicking what worked for the Panthers - Hit everything that moves.

I like a good solid body check as much as the next fan, but I'd much rather see the players on the ice than sitting 3 and 4 deep in the penalty box.

I was wondering if the physicality was my imagination or not. Canes game 1 was, IMO, the most physical I'd seen from Carolina I thought. And though they had fewer hits, it was still rougher than usual for them. I was actually impressed they were more physical in the OT than the Sens were.

But this is why I like the current format. Even though you'd prefer not to have matchups like Wild/Stars, Tampa/Montreal this early, the fact that these are division rivals going at each other makes it more personal.

If Ottawa can't send this back to Raleigh, they better not say a peep about the refs. The zebras are doing all they can to get the Sens going.

Thru the 1st 4 games of the 1st round...........

1. The puck was in Edmonton. I don't get the controversy. You're mad because they got it right?

2. Wild/Stars & Canadiens/Lightning have met the hype & then some.

3. Don't understand why people are surprised @ the Ducks 3-1 lead. Anaheim finished one point behind the Oilers in the standings & had more wins. If they could have just gotten 10 points in their last 10 regular season games, they would have won the Pacific. This was always going to be a coin toss matchup.

4. Stankoven is hotter than fish grease. Including his final 8 regular season games, he has 11 goals & 5 assists. Vs Ottawa, he had the initial goal in the 1st 3 contests, then switched it up in game 4 w/the go-ahead goal. His line w/Blake & Hall has easily been the best for the Canes down the stretch. Can they keep it up? Can the Aho, Svech, Jarvis line catch up?

5. Which leads me to this...the household names have been slow to show up so far. How much did you hear from Crosby, Mckinnon, Tkachuk, Kucherov in the 1st 3 games?

6. Before the playoffs started, I heard a lot about the star goaltenders missing. No one expected Ullmark, Vladar, Lyon & Anderson to have the games they had.

7. How often does a goalie win 30+ for his team & not get a playoff start? As good as Frederick has been in games 1,3 & 4, I wish the Canes would give Bussi a start or 2. He earned it IMO.

8. The only bit of NBA playoffs I have seen is in a sports bar. At home, I always choose the NHL. If you told me that would happen a decade ago I would have called you a liar.

9. The hit Nikishin took was clean. But the timing wasn't. Ottawa had the puck going the other way when Klevin collided w/him. Should have been interference. How the Canes ended up on the kill in the aftermath still bothers me.

10. Ridley Grieg should have his stick stuck up an orifice below his belt, blade end 1st. How the Canes ended up on the kill in the aftermath still bothers me.
