Cards news: Dec. 13 -- Cy Young winner White acquired from Miami for IF Mitchell and prospect
It didn't take long for new St. Louis Cardinals assistant general manager Peter Bendix to make an impact at his first Winter Meetings with the team.
With the Miami Marlins looking to dump payroll, the Cardinals pounced quickly landing two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Thomas White in exchange for infielder Ryan Mitchell and first base prospect Andy Hartigan. A 29-year-old right-hander, White earned Cy Young's in 2019 and 2032 and is a six-time NL All-Star. He also helped pitch the Marlins to a victory in the 2031 World Series. The 2033 season wasn't the best of White's career as he went 10-12 with a 4.08 ERA in 33 starts. But he still led the National League in inning's pitch (209.1), strikeouts (243) and walks per nine innings (1.8). A first-round pick by the Marlins in the 2023 MLB draft, White broke into the majors in 2027, going 10-7 with a 3.66 ERA in 29 starts. Over the course of his career, he owns an 89-50 record with a 3.40 ERA in 213 starts. His best season was 2029, when he went 19-7 with a 2.43 ERA. The Cardinals will pay the full amount of the remaining three years left on his seven-year contract. That will amount to a total $118,500,000 or $39.5M per season. But with the Cardinals coming into the postseason with one of the lowest payrolls in the game, that big contract only boosted them to 18th at $160,214,000. White will combine with Eric Segura, who went 15-8 with a 2.84 ERA in 2033, to give the Cardinals one of the best one and two starters in the game. A 26-year-old infielder capable of playing second, shortstop and third base, Mitchell had a solid season-plus with the Cardinals since being acquired in a trade with Kansas City on May 18, 2032. This season, Mitchell hit .390 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs in 147 games/141 starts. In 2032, following the trade, he played in 106 games/101 starts and hit .303 with eight homers and 43 RBIs. Taken in the third round of the 2030 draft by the Cardinals, Hartigan, 22, played the 2033 season at AAA Springfield where he hit .227 with 10 home runs and 60 RBIs in 138 games. |

Cards news: Jan. 17 -- RH reliever Jhoan Duran agrees to two-year deal
The St. Louis Cardinals have signed right-handed reliever Jhoan Duran to a one-year contract worth $22 million.
The 2035 portion of the contract includes a team option. The 36-year-old Duran reached the majors with the Minnesota Twins in 2022 and has been one of the league's more consistent closers over the past 12 seasons. Duran started last season with the Boston Red Sox, pitching in eight games and earning four saves, before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. When the season ended, Duran had appeared in 53 games and posted 31 saves along with a 6-6 record and a 2.57 ERA. Duran pitched with Minnesota (five seasons), Baltimore (one season), Arizona (three seasons), Colorado (one season and last year's split campaign with Boston and the Dodgers. Overall, he has pitched in 612 games, all in relief, and gone 47-52 with 336 saves and a 2.48. While lefty Juan Amarante is expected to be the team's primary closer, look for Duran to get his share of opportunities especially when right-handed hitters are expected to step to the plate. |
