NHL draft rights

I just throw this question out here, since I haven't bought the game for some years I just like to know.

When playing historical one do get the shot of drafting some players that is behind the Iron Curtain, as in real life.
But how is this handled. One option say you got a shot when they are under 20 even. I can't see how this will work with the same rules as kids from American and Canadian youth teams.
The draft rights as I think for those Russian monsters was extended long beyond the 2-3 years normal for signing.

So basically how do this game handle this ???
It's also a bit different with players from nation like Sweden and Finland that is historically a bit different than the kids from College leagues and such.
Take like BJ Salming who came over and wasn't drafted at all. Will he pop up as a 18y kid from Sweden to be able to draft ?

You can turn it off, so that if you draft an Iron Curtain palyer, you can offer him a contract just like anyone else

But if ON for how long will he be "my draftright" ? That was the main question.
I know I can turn it off.
If I got Iron Curtain on, my thought was if those players pop up in draft already as 19y players ? Which wasn't the case IRL. It took time to "find" these players and NHL teams wanted to wait and see. A very different world back then, even for players in Sweden and Finland. BJ wasn't discovered until he played senior hockey for years. Kind of weird if he is made available under 20 years old. Then he should not be drafted at all as IRL.

Whatever, I thought it was something understood deeper than just switching Iron Curtain on or off. That might not be the complete solution.
The key is also some just couldn't wait for the Iron Curtain to fall and defected. It's more complicated than an on-off switch.

This depends on which options you have the game, but as a default....

Iron curtain rule on means you can not sign or draft any soviet bloc player until 1989. That means if you switch it off you can sign any player over the draft age.

Theres no way i know of that you can draft a soviet player pre 1989 with this rule on and wait for 1989 to sign them

If you say start a historical in 1970. players like Mogilny and Stastny brothers won't join at right times. Also if you started in 1988 lets say, none of the russians(larionov, makarov etc) will have their rights with the nhl teams they should.

You can obivously manually edit all of this, but would be nice as an option.

Yes the Statsny bros really mess up this selection.
If go with Iron Curtain on then they miss the big chunk of their careers. If not on probably lots of others will jump over the pond.

So this is another problem then.
Conclusion sadly would be to have Iron Curtain off and no draft, not fun.
Then Statsnys would pop up in Quebec in correct year.

Iron Curtain on would not see Statsnys until 1989, which is terrible.
Don'f forget Nedomansky that came over in 1970s.
I had hope that if no draft, Iron Curtain on, would give you these players a shot to join. Looks like no.

But FHM needs something to fix this. It's important to get a historical save feel realistic. Now you get it wrong whatever you select.

I don´t want you to think we ignore this topic but unfortunately historical mode questions/reports need to be answered by Jeff. So hopefully he will look into this and let Malte and me know if we need to change something or if this works like intended.

Guess it's not an easy thing to get close to 100% correct. Playing with Iron Curtain on should be a starter, but then somehow the players that did defect should maybe have a trigger to be available when they did cross over the pond. That way teams can draft them whenever the rule say one could draft a player, BUT the players behind that block need to have a longer hold than with players in normal draft.
Now the actual date they did come over is already in the database, since that is what trigger the player if you select not to have any draft. Players then just pop up in the right team when they did IRL.
So all the info is there only needs to be handled differently.
It's different in the past with players from the rest of Europe. They didn't get drafted at all, just "discovered" and asked to come over.
Like some of the greatest Swedish players that made short tests but never stuck around, Leif Holmqvist, Ulf Sterner like.
They also had to think on their amateur status so that they could play in Olympics. Guess some Finns did the same.
Some came over and made a difference, like Borje Salming.

It's all a tricky thing to program into the game, but the history buffs among us would surely be happy if that part of the game could be enhanced, with the info that is already in it.
