The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that starting pitcher Sean Hermann and minor-league reliever Ali Ascanio will both miss extended time with injuries suffered during spring training.
Hermann, 29, coming off a disappointing 2032 season where he went 2-10 with a 5.17 ERA, will be out eight weeks with an elbow strain he incurred while pitching in a 7-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves on March 5.
Acquired from the New York Yankees during the 2029 season, Hermann has gone 25-30 with a 4.03 ERA in 99 starts while with St. Louis.
Ascanio, also 29, will miss four months with a torn back muscle he suffered while pitching in a 3-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 7.
The right-hander split the 2032 season between AA Springfield and AAA Memphis going 10-9 with a 4.10 ERA in 38 games/15 starts.
Ascanio did spend time in the majors during the 2029, 2030 and 2031 seasons, going 7-8 with a 4.21 ERA in 25 starts.

The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that right-handed relief pitcher Dikembe Sanchez will miss up to six weeks after he was diagnosed with shoulder inflammation after pitching in a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on March 8.
A free-agent signing, the 29-year-old Sanchez has pitched in six games covering 5.1 innings this spring compiling a 1-0 record with a 1.69 ERA.
Last season, Sanchez pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers relieving in 41 games and going with a 2-1 record with one save and a 3.52 ERA.
Sanchez broke into the majors with Milwaukee in 2027.
He has pitched in 253 games he is 24-18 with eight saves and a 2.75 ERA.
