CHICAGO REVAMPS BULLPEN
Chicago announced the trade of veteran LH reliever Mark Williams. He will head across town for two prospects, 19 year old OF Santiago Correa and 20 year old P Craig Rich. Both players were sent to the Iron Pigs Class A affiliate in Nashville.
After the trade was announced manager Sean Spicer informed the media of news he'd already brought to his players.
“Mario will resume his role as our closer, Nate and Rick McKitrick will set him up with the rest of the guys falling into various roles. Aaron Prochaska has been recalled as well.”

BACKROOM CHATTER
It needed to be blown up. The blown late leads and losses should have us in 3rd place at best were our offense not just raking. The only saving grace in our pitching has been a couple starters who are eating innings and this is all with no sign of the real Joey Morris (3-7 5.70)

WEEK 16
3 vs Indianapolis ALL-STAR BREAK
  • We are a combined 3-17 in our last 20 games. But sort of a big series considering we're +5 on them and OKC, a sweep of them would be huge, and the reverse is true.

RESULTS
7/20- CIP 5 IND 2 Morris CG 4 H 5 K 3 BB 2 ER 137 pitches. I managed the game and for the first time I can remember I was reluctant to go to the bullpen. Morris threw 137 pitches. Garcia HR (25) 2 BB 3 RBI (75) Roberts HR (11) SB (17)

ALL STAR BREAK
  • Wyoming's Michael McVaugh beat Alex Aguillon 10-9 in the final round to win the 2014 HR derby.
  • The NL wins 8-2 and 24 year old Phil Ward (OKC) wins the MVP
  • Bill Brumfield should have won it! He went 2-3 2R RBI. Merera and Morris both tossed a scoreless inning. Think that was Morris' first of the year...
.

NL POTW- SP Ricky Avendano (CIP) 2-0 0.00 First time in 4 seasons a SP has won this award

CHICAGO GETS SINCERE
The Chicago Iron Pigs announced a trade with the Atlanta bombers just minutes before the deadline. Chicago sent their top-rated OF prospect, Diego Martinez, to Atlanta for Closer Sincere Guinn. Guinn, a 2nd round pick in 2011 (55th overall) is 1-5 25 Saves with a 4.74 ERA. He led the NL with 80 appearances last year, going 5-3 5 Saves, 3.35. He's fanned 172 in 155 IP with 56 BB 132 H allowed.
Martinez is the game's #56 prospect and the highest-ranked OF prospect Chicago had. He was signed out of the Dominican in 2011 and has elite offensive tools.

BACKROOM CHATTER
  • I've traded, before this franchise, maybe 2 ranked prospects in my OOTP life. This year I've done the unthinkable but I am trying to build something while winning this year. Very different approach. Sincere is an arm I almost drafted (on name alone) but he's going to be here for years as he has just 2 years service time and is LH, and has an enormous power arm. Right now he's going to setup, but he's the guy, I think, in future years. He's just 25.
  • Right after this, to make a spot and clear room, I sent Ramon Rivera to Utah for a minor league LHP Javier Colon. Colon has 27 K's in 19 IBL innings this year. He'll head to New Orleans for now.

Meeting with SP Mike Perez
Acquired early in the year in the trade for Bobby Guijosa Mike has been what I'd hoped for. He's 8-4 4.44 and the solid #5 guy we traded for. That being said he's looking for an extension. I have no plans for him next year. I fully expect Luis Ornelas, or one of the other young arms to take over the bottom to bottom half of the IBL rotation. He's willing to take a 1 year deal and for less than half of the 4.4 he's making this year (he's asking 1.7 on a 1 year deal) and while that is absolutely appealing I cannot see giving him a contract when I fully intend for him to not be back. I'm not saving 2.7 million on a contract I wouldn't offer to begin with. I think he could be had for less than that as well. The other piece to this could be I am missing the pitching market? Over/under valuing what the top and bottom of a rotation looks like? I actually need to think more on this now that I have had a night to think about it.
  • Nick Terrell, acquired from Fresno in June is 6-4 3.31 at AAA New Orleans.
  • Luis Ornelas went 11-3 2.89 at AA and has struggled a bit at AAA going 2-2 6.17 with some gawdy peripherals that indicate he's likely to need another year in the minors at least. He's just 20.
  • Brian Pennington continues to tantalize, with a great out here and a few bad ones there. He's 25, and 7-9 5.78 in 21 starts at New Orleans.
  • The guy I think ends up here next year is our 2nd pick this year Elijah Washington. He's 22, and 4-0 3.65 over 11 starts in 69 IP with 73 K's and 27 BB's at AA Milwaukee. His stuff is all there, he needs to improve his control a bit before he gets called here.

SEPTEMBER CALL-UPS
  • With New Orleans below .500 and 6 out I am going to make moves not concerned with how they finish out.
  • Pitchers:
  • Allen Henderson went down and got his innings in going 4-3 9 Saves 2.43 striking out 31. Still having control concerns, as he walked 14 in those 29 innings,
  • 26 year old SP Rodolfo Nunez went 10-7 3.53 in 23 starts and earned a promotion. Nunez was a waiver claim from Brooklyn last November.
  • Sean Garrison (25) was acquired in a July trade with El Paso. He was lights out there going 0-1 2.92 in 12 IP with 16 punch outs. In New Orleans he was better, going 2-0 6 Saves 0.84 over 10 IP with 12 K's. Gotta find the strike zone more often but a huge arm.
  • Just 3 position players, 22 year old Matthew Brittingham was having another great season (.315/.355/.495) and earned a spot on the 40 man after his big year at AA last year.
  • Same with Matt Chiquete (25), who followed up a 2013 at AAA that saw him hit .289-15-60 with a .363 OBP.
  • I love the flexibility 3 catchers provides and the main target of the July deal with El Paso was Catcher Skyler Houston (30). + Defender with elite eye. Was hitting .236 with a .411 OBP at New Orleans after a quick stint in El Paso where he sported a .400 OBP in 35 PA's.
  • John Tite (.266/.346/.572 29 HR 61 RB), Danny McKeith (.300/.351/.424 4 HR 36 RBI) and Andy Williams (.257/-29-72) were all considered but right now none are on the 40-man. Williams and McKeith will be rule-5 eligible this winter.

6 GAMES LEFT TO PLAY
  • Boston and Philadelphia are tied atop the AL East with Staten Island 4 GB.
  • Chicago leads Dallas by 3 games in the AL Central.
  • Wyoming clinched the AL West.
  • Cleveland is 1 game up on Charlotte and 4 on Columbus in the AL's Southern division.
  • In the NL Washington is 4 games up on New York in the East.
  • Chicago has clinched the Central
  • San Francisco is 3 games up on LA and 5 on Fresno with the Bears at least clinching a post-season berth.
  • Jacksonville clinched the NL South.
  • Carlo Ambrogi will win the AL batting title as he's hitting .369 to 2nd place Andrew King (UT) .320.
  • Zach Stewart will win another HR title with 56.
  • In the NL Gus Garcia leads New York's Sean Kramer .344 to .335.
  • Luis Corona has 56 HR's, leading Bill Brumfield by 8.
  • San Diego's Juan Laurel has 22 wins, leading Eric Davis (LA) and his 19, 278 K's to Zach Mcmillion's 236 and a 2.47 ERA to Eric Davis' 2.48 as he tries to win just the 2nd pitching triple crown, and his 4th Koufax award.
  • The playoff rotation will be on 85 pitch limits to use this last start as a short tune-up and rest outing.
  • Likely go Merera, Avendano, Morris, Bush for the opening series.
  • All the position players will be getting spelled all week. Either mid game or getting young guys starts.
  • The Hitmen got bad news as 21 year old Sid Woodward (8-7 3.65) went down and will need shoulder surgery. Their 2012 1st rounder (7th overall) was a key piece to the team that is about to clinch their division, being 3 up with 3 to play.

  2. Dan Wilkins (BOS) 26
  3. Juan Laurel (SD) 25
