Monthly Boxing Magazine Rankings in 1950s
I have a question for you boxing aficionados. This is directly a Title Bout subject but a question for something I'm looking into to do a C&D "old" Title Bout replaying.
Ring Magazines back then I know when they'd publish their monthly rankings in each month's edition, the rankings are for the month that is two months before the published edition they appear in. So for example, the December 1954 Ring, it's rankings are for up through about the middle of October 1954 and so forth each month. They actually give a specific date the rankings up up to for fights completed thru that date, for example that October 1954 is for fights up through October 18th. My question is in regards to the rankings the Boxing and Wrestling Magazine for that time period that Eddie Borden published in that magazine. All it says in them is Ratings for the Month. I did a google search and best answer I came up with they were for rankings as of the month before the magazine edition they were in. So I have the December 1954 edition. Can anyone here tell me if they know pretty certain if the rankings shown in that December 1954 edition would be for fights completed in November or think they would be for October like Ring Magazine? BTW also is this the same Eddie Bordon who did the Fistic Market column in Ring Magazine in the 1930s or a different Eddie Bordon? Rocco |

Did the December 1954 edition say when it was published? If early December then they might cover two months previous or say a month and a half. Doubt there was a specific window each month.

That kind of tells me that they are publishing/printing a month magazine during the preceding month to have to the news stands the first of that month. So be publishing and printing and trucking February during the month of January and be released to the stands first of February. Which to me would seem them the Rankings in February would be for fights that have been completed by sometime in November into Part of December with the Rankings being as of December, two months previous to February like Ring was doing. Doe that all sound logical timing? They have another monthly section called Exciting Fights of the Month in each month edition. got to thinking I can look at some of those and see when those fights actually happened. Rocco |

So looking at the Exciting Fights of the Month section in the December 1954 Boxing and Wrestling, there were 17 fights cover. The dates of the fights ranged from 10/18/54 to 11/17/54. So the reviews in the Exciting Fights of the Month in the Dec 1954 issue covers fights Mid Oct-Mid Nov which probably would be too soon to include in the Rankings shown in the December Issue if the issue did come out the first of the month of that dated issue. I don't have an issue earlier than this Dec 1954 but I have all of 1955 so I'll look at some consecutive issues in 1955 and some issues in 1955 in the Ring to see if I find a same pattern between the two. Reason I'm doing this is to get like month periods of the two corresponding magazines. This project I want to do a sort of What If replay of 1955-going into 1956 heavyweight/LHW fights. |

Solved the question about Boxing & Wrestling Mag Rankings
Looked through some B&W's and Ring in 1955 and it looks like they generally correspond with each other.
Ring's May 1955 issue World Rankings are for fights up to End of March 21, 1955. I looked at B&W May 1955 and it's Fights of the Month ranged from Mid Feb to Mid March. spotted through a number of fights in B&W's FOTM and found them In Ring's listing of fights by weight division they post in the same column with the Rankings. These similarities looked for June Editions. Ring rankings showed through April 21 and the B&W's FOTMs ranged from Mid 18 to Mid April. The rankings themselves of course differ between the two magazines. So enough of that mystery digging! Rocco |
