James Gifford 1884
Quote:
https://digital-collections.columbus.../african/id/37 If this is that club, the manager is identified in the Columbus Dispatch on April 29, 1887 as J.H. Gifford, who was brought in from Syracuse, which would be Jim Gifford (giffor001jam). So here is a comparison of the manager in the 1887 with the known image of Mr. Gifford. Is it a match? The mustache makes it hard to compare. |

Billy Martin 1969
Understandable that the Managers' Pack only has one image per skipper, and understandable that with Billy it's a Yankees pic…
…but as he's apparently not in this thread at all, I thought I'd add a Twins pic I found on Pinterest: It's a pretty nice pic, IMO. |

Billy Martin 1969 (1977 Yankees)
Billy wins his first (and only) World Series as a manager, pictured with his favorite of his players:
From Tony Kornheiser's season-opening profile of George Steinbrenner ("That Damn Yankee", April 9, 1978, The New York Times magazine section). The piece is reproduced in full on The Bronx Banter Blog. |

Walter Johnson 1929 (1933 Cleveland)
After 25 years as a Washington Senator (21 pitching, 4 as manager), The Big Train finds a new track, taking over the Indians in mid-season. (Date of picture is June 12)
From the current RMY auction but I took out the yellowing and reduced the facial shadow. "Barney" does return to DC, but in the radio booth. If you have that 1939 Athletics-Senators radio call, that's Walter. |

Harry Spence (1888)
Harry Spence played for roughly ten years in the 1870s-1880s. Towards the end of his career, he managed Indianapolis in the National League in 1888. I ran across a reference to a picture of him in a paper called the Sporting Times. All I can find on the Sporting Times is that it was a weekly published in London, devoted mostly to racing. It is available on the British Newspaper Archive, but I have burned my three free views on that site already.
So I have two questions. The first is do I have the correct Sporting Times, or is there another that I'm missing? And second is does anyone know where else I could find this Sporting Times online, or wherever else this picture might be located? |

The SABR bio for 1890 Brooklyn Gladiators manager Jim Kennedy mentions that Kennedy and P.J. Donahue started a New York-based weekly sports paper titled The Sporting Times in March 1887, which is a more likely source. I have not yet found an online repository for the NY Sporting Times.
