Pee Wee came into pro ball with the 1938 Louisville Colonels who were unaffiliated so (like Cobb in Augusta in 1905) anyone can grab him by purchasing the contract. The Colonels didn't get affiliated with the Sox until 1939. I had never heard that story with regard to Cronin. Interesting nugget there. Quite the what-if among many for the Sox.

Yeah, according to BBRef, the Sox purchased him from the LoCos "before the 1939 season", then traded him to the Dodgers in July of that same year. Another quality decision from that era.

The futility of that attitude comes into stark relief when you consider that Pee Wee went to the Dodgers, where their SS was also their Manager - Leo the Lip, who happily made way.

Hopefully, you can have a couple of those at Fenway--though the Yankees reaching 20 (if not 25) World Series titles before that is likely, especially with Mantle joining the team...
