1504 games, 900 goals - that's .59 goals per game. Congrats Ovi, amazing accomplishment. Edit - corrected by old guy doing old guy math in his head

So....last night in Raleigh.....eventful & strange........
To start, Jordan Staal set the record for the most games in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform @ 910. He soon got into his 1st fight since 2017. More on that later........ ...The Wild scored the 1st goal. Soon after, D Jalen Chatfield got rocked by a hit from Pitlick (sp?). Timing was fine. But it looked like his shoulder hit Jalen's chin 1st. Before he landed on the ice, Chatfield's head went into a Minnesota knee. Chatty was laid out on the ice & knocked out for the night. That is when Staal went after Pitlick & bloodied his nose. Pitlick received a game misconduct, Staal penalties for roughing & instigating, 10 minutes. Jack Blake got the next score on a brilliant solo rush.. Thirty-one seconds later, the Wild retook the lead. Minny had 2 shots, 2 goals. Carolina stayed behind for all of 21 seconds. Svechnikov hit one from long distance. That was the 2nd quickest back-to-back goals of the night. About 3 minutes before the 1st period ended Walker hit one from the blue line just after a power play ended. It was Walker's 2nd goal in as many games. 2nd period, the flurry continued. Boldy got his 2nd of the evening on the power play. Just half a minute in. This tie didn't last 10 seconds. Literally. Ehlers got his 2nd in as many games on a nice feed from Blake. Nine seconds after the Wild had tied it. Twenty one minutes, 7 goals on 11 shots, a game misconduct and a fight. What more could you ask for? It would have been good if that was satisfactory for you. Cause nothing happened in the final 39 minutes. None of the next 40 shots found the net. Just weird. Carolina 4, Minnesota 3. What makes the Chatfield injury so disappointing is the fact this was K'Andre Miller's 1st game since the West Coast trip. So they lose one defenseman after gaining one back. Glad we are still early in the year. But you'd like these guys to start building some chemistry w/whoever they are paired w/. Hard to do when groupings are constantly in flux.

Canes 6, Sabres 3
Carolina led 4-1 after 2 periods. Then Buffalo got it w/in 1 in the 1st 10 min of the 3rd. Jarvis got an empty netter to clinch the win. Afterward, Charles Legault scored his 1st career goal into an empty net from deep in the defensive zone. Svechnikov has been on his hot streak w/a goal & an assist to Aho. LeGault & Kotkaniemi each had a goal & assist as well. Nystrom recorded his 1st NHL point w/an assist on Kotkaniemi's goal. And Eric Robinson had a goal in his 1st game back from injury. No time to celebrate. Canes fly to Toronto to play @ 630 tomorrow night.

Another day, another defenseman out. This time, the Canes need a replacement for the replacement. Rookie Charles Legault, a game after his 1st NHL point, got stuck on the ice in a scrum and had his hand sliced by a skate. After surgery, he is now out 3-4 months.
Soooooooooo............. D Slavin out after one game.........D Gostisbehere out on the 1st road trip..........soon followed by K'Andre Miller.......Gostisbehere back for one home game then back out again............K'Andre Miller returns, Jalen Chatfield out in the same game..........now Legault. I can't recall seeing in any sport one unit getting blasted by so many injuries in just 15 games. The season is just 32 frikkin' days old.

.....And to show just how much of a novice I was, it was just this year that I realized it is protocol for the goal scorer to be the 1st to go to the bench for high 5's & fist bumps. I can't believe I didn't notice that till a few weeks ago. Still learning.......... .....To this season, came off a 4 point weekend w/a stinker vs the Capitals Tuesday. A 4-1 loss. Ovechkin, big surprise, scored against them again. I know he has 901. But I swear he has 1500 vs the Canes. I didn't watch it cause the Tar Heels tipped off the same time as the puck dropped. But all the radio talk said the Canes were just bad. Got Ghost back, only to see Anderssen leave in the 3rd period after a collision. Somebody make it stop!!!!!!!!

Aho scored his 17th OT winner in a 4-3 comeback win vs the Canucks. Carolina really dominated the game (shots 38-17), but gave Vancouver a number of breaks. Including this brain fart by Sean Walker.
Andrei Svechnikov was a huge factor in this one. He scored the 1st 2 Carolina goals and had an assist on Hall's game tying goal. On the negative side of things, he got his stick up too high (again..........) and got Seth Jarvis in the face, knocking him out of the game. (Whatta ya know? Another injury) Kotkaneimi was also lost in the game due to a twisted ankle. And they host Edmonton tonight. So no rest. No breaks. I'm kinda afraid to get tickets this year, less I end up on IR.

Watched some of that game, Canes dominated, thought they should have had 3 or 4 more goals. Definitely deserved the win. Shouldn't have gone to OT.
As a Habs fan, feeling the injury pain too. Kaiden Guhle out 8-10 weeks. Lost Newhook for 4 months. Our #1 center (Suzuki) is playing but not practicing due to a foot injury. Hope it's not serious. So glad we got off to a decent start. You don't make the playoffs in Oct/Nov, but you can sure put yourself in a hole if you stumble out of the gate. Guess we'll see how good our depth is now. As much as injuries suck, they're inevitable. I prefer to have them early in the season rather Mar/Apr when the real grind is on. Hope they heal up good and come back strong. GHG |

The hits (losses) keep on coming. Kirby Dach out for 4-6 weeks with a fractured foot. Poor Kirby, he can't seem to catch a break, 4th consecutive season he'll miss significant time due to injury.
And speaking of losses, last night was our 3rd in a row at home. In those 3 games we've allowed 15 goals while scoring 3. That's just ugly. In Columbus tomorrow night, could sure use a win. Last edited by Bluenoser; 11-16-2025 at 02:09 PM. |

Well, another loss although we made it close. Got to a shoot out against the Blue Jackets, but still came out on the short end. Much better performance overall.
We're still a young team growing into a contender, and if we can some how whether the injury storm and hang around close to a playoff spot we should be alright come Mar/Apr. Next up, the Great 8 and his Capitals coming to town for a Thursday evening match up. Ovi got off to a bit of a slow start but has goals in 3 of his last 4 games. Ever dangerous, we'll have be on top of our game to keep him in check. GHG |

On another note, I didn't realize the Avs have just one regulation loss this entire year.

The AV's are scary good right now. A lot of hockey to be played yet, but they sure do play a solid all around game. Not too many cracks in that line up.

Should we mark Apr 26th on our calendars? That is when the Stars visit the Islanders. The NHL announced Mikko Ratanen will not receive additional punishment for this hit last night on Romanov. As Rat came off the ice due to a game misconduct, Patrick Roy yelled @ Mikko that he wouldn't finish the game in NY.
I am surprised specific threats like that are allowed.

That's been the standard in NHL for a lot of years now. Star player commits a nasty, nothing gets done. Occasionally a small fine. That was a cheap and dirty hit, and Patrick Roy is well known for his hot temper. This could get ugly, but with a few months between games, it will have simmered down some.
I'm sure there will be some retribution in the rematch, but most likely the Ref's won't let it get out of hand and will clamp down quickly. I wish the league would be more consistent when it comes to dealing with that stuff, but they aren't. |

I really don't like the constant fighting there used to be in the game. But the evil part of me kinda misses a "good" hockey beef.
