Dave Stieb variant

Decided to stick my recently obtained Dave Stieb variant in the bullpen for the new season. Beginning to wish I hadn’t.

The base card was a stud for like 10 seasons, now even a level 5 variant of him can't seem to have an ERA under 5. I think there are just way too many good cards out there now, almost every pitcher is getting hit hard.

I haven't gotten one good season out of the variant version yet (3 seasons in high gold to date).

The ERA is down to a respectable 5.48 after 46 innings!
This is the first year I have used variants (mainly because we have been given two through missions) and don’t understand why the individual pitch ratings don’t increase inline with the overall ratings. Likewise with batters, the position rating increases but the fielding rating doesn’t. However this might be me not understanding the mechanics of the game properly.

I've always assumed that the underlying ratings increase without having it shown. It's clear that range and arm ratings are more important than position ratings, as players learning new positions field much better than the pathetic position ratings they usually start with. Train George Davis at third or Andrew McCutchen in left and they aren't going to miss a lot of balls just because their position ratings are still 3 or 10 or some other low number.
