News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, CYL, and CBA

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

22 Novermber 2315

CCBL Welcomes 14 New Schools

The CCBL is ever-expanding, and 14 more institutions have joined the fray for the 2316 season.

In the Northern Commonwealth Conference, four new teams joined: the College of the Atlantic Black Flies, New England University Nor'easters, Southern Maine University Whalers, and Vim! College Captains.

Joining the Atlantic Sound Conference are the Bridgewater State University Bears, Central Connecticut State University Blue Devlis, New Haven University Chargers, and UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs.

In the new Mid-Commonwealth Conference, the Sturbridge University Mighty Men, American International Yellow Jackets, and Franklin Pierce Ravens move into the conference, joined by newcomers, the Fitchburg State Falcons, Roxbury College Tigers, and Salem State Vikings.

The Independents also added three new teams to join Nichols College: the Bryant Bulldogs, Framingham State Rams, and Post University Eagles.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL and APL

by Evan Guy

18 December 2315

NWL: A Future History

I was just part of a meeting with officials from the CBO and NWL in talks about what is coming. As most of you in the Bradberton area may know, the Season Pass Association, made up of the Nuka World League and Vim! League, has been purchased by the Commonwealth Baseball Organization. The meeting detailed what that entails. I am allowed to share this as an official press release.

The SPA is on a four-year deal to remain as an independent association until the end of the 2319 season. At that time, the leagues will be disbanded. Teams of both leagues will then join the Greater Boston Rookie League as minor affiliates of CBO teams.

Professional baseball in Bradberton! In the place of an independent league in Bradberton, a CBO team will be placed here, starting in 2320. The CBO has stated that it has a four-team expansion in mind, but we only know of Bradberton and Far Harbor for two of the teams and have no idea if the other teams also begin in 2320.

As part of the excitement (and perhaps confusion), we at Nuka News are launching a Fan Forum where you can send in comments, questions, and suggestions for the future of baseball in Bradberton.

Beyond speculation, the additional park being built, with signs reading, "Slugger Springs," had already upped the talks in the area. At first, there was an expansion to Orange's Fizztop Mountain Park at Nuka-Town USA, but the new theme park area moved to the south of Nuka-Town USA, an area that was undeveloped land before.

In our meeting, the Nuka-Cola contingents did not give more specifics about Slugger Springs, but they also reiterated that there would be a new experience for visitors to Nuka-World. Based on the size of the stadium, there are several expectations of what may be included as part of the new theme park in addition to current six.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL and APL

by Evan Guy

10 January 2316

NWL Greats

In cooperation with Jimmy Gresham of the Vim! View, we are going to begin looking back on the first 17 years of the Season Pass Association. Of course, as the writer for the Nuka News Update, I will cover the NWL. With 17 seasons down and four more to go before the league becomes rookie affiliates for the CBO, there has been some fun baseball throughout the Nuka-World parks.

Today, let's look at a few of the hitters around the league who have sped their way to success. It was a tough list, but we thought the following criteria would make up the players we feel most embody "Speed Hitters":

Speed Hitters: SB, 3B, R. These are the guys getting on base and getting around the bases. They may be high OBP guys, hit a lot, slug, but we know they can fly.

1. Silt Bean, Cherry, 2303-2310 - Led the NWL in stolen bases in 5 of his 8 NWL seasons. Holds the NWL career record in SB. He was also 13th in
triples (32) and 10th in runs (447).

2. Rowboat Kinsella, Quartz, 2301-2310 - Kinsella was pretty good at all three statistical categories, finishing his career with 68 triples (#1 all-time), 383 runs (20th all-time), and 170 stolen bases (10th all-time).

3. Mike Blackheart, Cherry, 2300-2312 - Blackheart used 13 seasons to accrue stats, including finishing with 53 triples (2nd all-time), 462 runs (9th all-time), and 257 stolen bases (2nd all-time).

Vim! League's Legends: Part One

I know I have only been the Vim! View reporter for part of a season, but I have been watching Vim! baseball since I was a kid and I love it and I think that Vim! baseball is the best baseball league ever created in the history of earth even since the B.C. times which was like 2317 years ago.

I am sad that the same eight teams punching each other in the fog will not continue forever, but we know that the Vim! League and the Season Pass Association will end at the end of the 2319 season. With that said, I am proud to analyze three of the greatest hitters in Vim! League history. These players have been good for a long time and will be considered some of the greats when we look back on the history of the Vim! in like 10 years.

Legendary Hitters (10 or more years of service):

1. Toppie Gunn, Dalton Farm, 2306-2315 - Gunn began as a 2nd-round pick of the Lexington Synths of the CBO in the 2299 Rooke Draft. He moved up to play with the Synths for parts of four seasons (2302-2305) before he was traded to Dalton Farm in 2306.

Once traded to the Fog Crawlers, Gunn went off. He was the 2306 Vim! Fresh Face Award winner AND the Vim! MVP Award winner. Gunn has won the MVP four times (2306, 2308, 2310, 2315). He also won the Best Fielder Award twice, Best Hitter Award nine times, and represented the Crawlers in the All-Star Game 11 times. Gunn is the all-time home runs leader (272), but he is also top ten all-time in the following categories:

OBP - .400 (10th)
SLG - .657 (2nd)
OPS - 1.057 (2nd)
R - 709 (3rd)
TB - 2062 (4th)
3B - 49 (7th)
RBI - 761 (2nd)
SB - 213 (4th)
BB - 470 (3rd)
Ks - 686 (2nd)
WAR - 37.12 (2nd)

2. Chris Knickerbocker, Echo Lake, 2304-2315 - Knickerbocker was originally drafted by Fort Hagen of the CBO in the second round of the 2297 Rookie Draft. He played with the Silver Shroud for one season, 2303, where he hit .318 with a home run and 20 RBI in 52 appearances with 24 starts. The next season, the Shroud traded Knickerbocker to Echo Lake.

With the Harbormen, Knickerbocker has been one of the best, including winning one MVP (2311), being a five-time Best Fielder, being a seven-time Best Hitter, and a 11-time All-Star. In career stats, Knickerbocker ranks in the Top Ten all-time in the following categories:
Avg - .361 (2nd)
OBP - .402 (8th)
SLG - .617 (6th)
OPS - 1.019 (5th)
G -1005 (4th)
AB - 4049 (3rd)
R - 770 (2nd)
H - 1462 (1st)
TB - 2499 (1st)
1B - 924 (1st)
2B - 276 (4th)
HR - 237 (2nd)
RBI - 886 (1st)
WAR - 37.87 (1st)

3. Drew Buntrock, Far Harbor (2301-2312) and Dalton Farm (2312-2315) - Buntrock announced his retirement on September 15, ending a 15-year career in the Vim! League. Buntrock was the #2 overall pick in the Vim! League's Inaugural Draft. While he never won a Vim! MVP Award, Buntrock did win the Best Fielder Award five times, Best Hitter four times, and appeared in 12 All-Star games.

In his career with the Ghoul Whales and Fog Crawlers, Buntrock has finished in the following statistical categories as a top team all-time leader:

G - 1063 (2nd)
AB - 4103 (2nd)
R - 792 (1st)
H - 1263 (2nd)
TB - 2186 (2nd)
1B - 750 (8th)
2B - 277 (3rd)
3B - 62 (4th)
HR - 174 (8th)
RBI - 696 (4th)
SB - 154 (10th)
CS - 64 (8th)
BB - 500 (2nd)

BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

10 February 2316

CCBL Welcomes Crop of 1219 Freshmen

In the first season where the CCBL has tried harder to convince more CYL players to join the college ranks, there are tons of CYL talent that has moved on to the CCBL. The CCBL has petitioned a 19-year-old minimum age for the CBO leagues to try to get even more talent in the CCBL, but there has been no movement yet from the CBO Front Office.

The CCBL is also incorporating a few new rules, including a 40-man roster and a 15-man "redshirt" roster for players to sit out for one year. These players can still opt out for the CBO draft when eligible, but can have one more year of eligibility. (StLee's note: I do not think this is actually possible in OOTP, but I am stating it for role-playing purposes since changing up a couple features means I have an influx of 16 and 17 year olds, like Saw below, who are not eligible to be on the CCBL roster).

With that stated, let's break down 10 freshmen of the 1219 newcomers who will probably see their names called in a future CBO draft.

1. 1B Bear Jones, Tufts University - Jones appears to be a swing-for-the-fences type who will hit a ton of home runs but strike out at least four or five times as much as he hits balls over the fence. Scouts love that raw power and think that he is one of the unique players to let swing away in all circumstances.

2. 1B Ryanab Costello, Vermont Tech - Another powerful lefty, Costello may not be as powerful as Jones, but he does have the power to put a ball over any part of the field, meaning teams will not shift towards right. Scouts think that he can be a good all-around hitter who will have high OBP and SLG in his career.

3. SS MJ Saw, Mass Maritime - The Buccaneers get a premier SS entering the fray in Saw. He is a power hitter who should see himself in the middle of the lineup to pair with outstanding junior 2B Cool Papa Cornwell. Saw may not be the best at contact, but he does get a lot of sweetspot hits. In time, he could be a premier hitter and decent middle infielder. Saw is also on a team that is expected to compete for the College Series crown, so he may be designated to what is called "redshirt freshman" duty, where he sits out his freshman season due to roster limits.

4. LF Aethan Fry, Greenfield College - Fry will not blow people away and may never be an MVP-type player, but he is really good all around. The Jack OF could put up high numbers on offense and be good enough to properly man one of the corner OF psotisition. Power will be his greatest skill, but he should hover around. 300 for his career, too.

5. SP Arcade Anderson, Northeastern - Hailed as a strikeout pitcher, Anderson is a lefty with mid-90s speed and four good pitches, with his fastball-changeup options currently his best combination to fool hitters. Scouts believe Anderson has the upper ceiling to be a Vim! Pitcher Award winner in his future.

6. LF Pepper Spicer, Bridgewater State - Spicer is our first hitter who hits for average over power. While he is listed as a LF, Spicer could also develop into a good CF since he has decent range and a good glove. Scouts think that Spicer is bound to hit at the top of the lineup at this level and the next, though BNN currently pencils him in as the Bears' third hitter, partially due to BSU making the move this season to the CCBL.

7. 1B Damien Boiledleather, University of New England - The Nor'easters are also joiining the CCBL and have a freshman sensation in Boiledleather. He is a contact hitter who can pop a few over the fence. He is also considered a journey defender. While he is listed at 1B, Boiledleather could pretty much play anywhere but C. We assume he will end up on teh right side of the infield, though.

8. LF Az Tarheel, Bryant University - Tarheel is the type of hitter who hits the ball on a rope, leading to lots of singles and gap doubles. He is not speedy, so he cannot stretch the bases, which might mean hitting on the back half of the lineup, around 6th or 7th.

9. RF R.U. Whiskey, New Haven University - Whiskey is considered to be a good all-around hitter, most likely to hit for a single, but capable of driving any pitch over the fence in right field. He is also considered to be a decent fielder who will be tough to sit each day and could see himself on his 18th birthday premiering in RF for the Chargers on opening day.

10. SP Eye Anson, Franklin Pierce - Anson joins the Ravens as a four-pitch lefty who will eventually mature to have top-level stuff. He is a low-to-mid 90s pitcher who will constantly mix up his pitches, though he leans a little more heavily on his four-seamer and slider.

His name is actually based on OOTP user Ruwisc who helped to build one of the first schedules for the CBO. I finally got him into the game here!

I will add a note for when he does some damage. He will be known as "On the Rocks" by coaches and peers.

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

Love for CBO's Sons

The new crop of freshmen has hit the CYL, and we are pleased to note that there is a ton of talent entering. Among that talent is a crop of baseball genetics, sons of current and past CBO players. Let's take a look at five sons of CBO players in the class of 2319 (graduating the CYL) and who may end up taken in that 2319 draft.

1. C Joe Rathmann, Jr., Holyoke, Son of: Joe Rathmann, Sr., Vault 81 - Rathmann Jr. joins the Mech Dragons as both a talented hitter and defender. While he may never reach the .390 season his father had in 2300, Rathmann is a patient hitter who recognizes the right pitch and then likes tro punch it to any field. He will never hit a lot of home runs, but he should hit a few. Behind the plate, he is an all-tools catcher.

2. SP Wand Engill, Castle, Son of: Austin Engill, Retired - Austin Engill was the 1st overall draft pick in the CBO. Now, his sone enters the CYL as perhaps the top pitcher entering the CYL in 2316. Wand Engill relies heavily on two pitches, a fastball that tops out around 95 and a killer slider. He needs to develop his changeup and circle change more to become an early starter for the Freedom, but scouts believe he could one day be a staff ace.

3. RF Rocket Rooth, New Haven, Son of: Babs Rooth, County Crossing - Babs Rooth is one of the all-time greats of the CBO, and now his son begins his playing career in a CBO affiliate league. Rocket is like his dad in the sense that he has a powerful bat that can pop with the best of them. he will need to improve his defense to stay in the OF. Scouts are already pencilling him in as a 1B draftee who will hit in the middle of the lineup.

4. LF Yeller Cocoa, Newburyport, Son of: Barker Cocoa, University Point - Being the son of the greatest player in CBO history is probably a lot of pressure. Still, Yeller has a lot going for him. He may never pop as many homers as his dad, but he should be an average champion in his lifetime. He needs to learn more patience at the plate, but he is able to fight off a lot of bad pitches and will be able to tunr pitches over the plate into bases.

5. LF Viper Kowalski, Sherwood Manor, Son of: Donny Kowalski, Retired - Donny just ended his 20-year career, with 19 of those years with the Abernathy Adamantium-Bunker Hill 75ers franchise. As one of the top hitters in CBO history, he has sent a lot of skills to his son, Viper, who is expected to be a top hitter, also. Viper is expected to be a top all-around hitter with a good amount of speed for the base paths and outfield range. Scouts would not be surprised to see him as the #1 overall pick in the 2319 Draft.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL and APL

by Evan Guy

21 February 2316

NWL Greats

Last month we featured some of the speed demons of the NWL. With a bit less talent than what the CBO produces, small ball players are gems in the NWL. Now let's look at the overall best hitters, especially those powerful guys who tend to win MVPs.

1. Ah Oona, Grape, 2306-2315 - Oona joined the NWL after starting in the CBO as the 3rd-overall pick of Roxbury in the 2300 Rookie Draft. After playing just 29 games with the Rad Sox in 2305, his debut season, the Sox sent Oona to the Painted Ghouls. From there, Oona has become the NWL's all-time leader in HR (228). Oona is also the all-time leader in RBI (669) and WAR (29.93).

2. Daniel Rousseaux, Quartz, 2303-2315 - Rousseaux's longevity has been to the Star Force's benefit as one of the all-time great hitters with a lot of longevity. Rousseaux's longevity has also led him to be atop the leaderboard in career hits (1355), singles (918), and doubles (297).

3. Bumper Robinson, Grape (2302-2311), Orange (2311-2315) - Robinson is another player who has carved out a long career in the NWL. He has never been great enough to earn an MVP, but what he has done has been consistent in his 14 years. Robinson is the all-time leader in games played (1150), at-bats (4158), runs (775), total bases (2068), and walks (564).

News of the Vim! League and Its Affiliates

by Jimmy Gresham

Vim! League's Legends: Part Two

Are you going to be just as sad as I am when the Vim! League becomes a part of the CBO? Its too bad that they could not make the league like the AAAA where the players that were once great CBO players could come together to play out their final years and make the islanders here excited to see guys they followed when they were younger. Maybe we could see several older Vim! League stars playing into their late-30s.

Or, maybe I need to look at the brighter side. Far Harbor is going to have a CBO team!!!! And we still have youth league squads and college squads, and some of those same players will stay on the island once they are picked up by the CBO team. We're hearing that the Vim! League teams will be a part of the GBRL, which stands for the Greater Boston Rookie League. Time for a new name? I mean, Far Harbor and Boston are pretty far away.

I am loving seeing the skyline lit up with vertibirds. Whichever genius reverse engineered them to start building them in the Commonwealth should be given a billion caps.

OK, now on to the product of the sadness of losing the Vim! League in just a few years. Let's now take a look at the three best starting pitchers in Vim! League history according to statistical compilations. Like the hitters, I am looking to build a list from those who have pitched at least 10 years in the Vim! League and then list where they stand in the Top Ten statistically for all-time categories.

1. Jason Woods, Echo Lake, 2303-2315 - Woods was drafted by the Abernathy Adamantium (now Bunker Hill 75ers) in the CBO's 2296 Inaugural Draft as a 2nd-rounder, the 48th overall pick. He pitched two seasons with the Adamantium in the IL before going to The Slog in the CBO from 2298-2301 and then pitching with FHE in 2302. In all, he compiled a 35-33 record with a 4.00 ERA. He was an All-Star selection in 2298.

In 2303, he joined the Harbormen and then began to dominate the Vim! League. In his 13 seasons with Echo Lake, the 37-year-old Woods has compiled a record of 140-106 with a 3.88 ERA. He has won the Vim! Top Arm Award five times, won the Vim! Fresh Face Award, and has been selected to the All-Star game 12 times. He is in the Top Ten in the following pitching categories:
ERA - 3.88 (6th)
W - 140 (2nd)
L - 106 (4th)
GS - 291 (4th)
CG - 110 (1st by 33!)
Shutouts - 29 (1st)
IP - 2279.0 (1st)
HA - 2401 (1st)
HRA - 190 (8th)
K - 1708 (2nd)
BB - 525 (9th)
BB/9 - 2.07 (6th)
WHIP - 1.28 (6th)
Opp. OBP - .311 (5th)
Opp. OPS - .718 (9th)
WAR - 59.73 (1st)

2. Keith Lighthouse, Far Harbor, 2301-2315 - Lighthouse has been in the Vim! League since its inception. Drafted as the Ghoul Whales' 2nd-round pick (19th overall) in the Inaugural Vim! League Draft, Lighthouse has been a one-time Vim! Top Arm Award winner, a one-time Best Hitter at P winner, and an 11-time All-Star. Lighthouse has compiled a record of 143-98 with a 4.08 ERA. He is in the Top Ten in Vim! League history in the following statistical categories:
W - 143 (1st)
L - 98 (8th)
Win% - .593 (9th)
GS - 305 (2nd)
CG - 33 (8th)
IP - 2077.0 (3rd)
HA - 2300 (2nd)

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

1 March 2316

New Season to Begin

The 2316 season is just three days away with the Nuka Cup beginning where 24 of the teams begin the Play-in Round of the tournament. Last season, the Atom Cats prevailed, defeating Lexington in the finals. The Synths also lost in the Sole Survivor Series to Vault 81 but enter the 2316 season as perhaps the favorites. We'll see what PAM thinks in a month.

There was also big news regarding the expansion of the CBO where we now know that there will be teams in the Far Harbor and Bradberton area. Teams in both the NWL and Vim! League are expected to become minor league affiliates of the CBO starting in 2320. The CBO has expressed expanding by four teams, but the other two teams have not been named. Places in other states of the Commonwealth--Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New Hampshire--have been mentioned, but no definitive places have been named. There has been a lot of construction business around the Commonwealth, so there are many locations with stadium expansions happening.

For a bit of news around the CBO minors, there have been some movements of teams, along with a few name changes. Here is what we know so far:

1. Melrose Eyebots (BMU) - The team formerly known as the Med-Tek Eyebots moved out of the Cambridge area to be the only team located in Melrose. Melrose had been trying to start a CYL team, which may still come, but they will gladly host a minor league team. They also took on a different logo look for the 2316 season.

2. Abington Patriots (BMU) - The Patriots made a move and changed their name from Pleasant Lake to Abington.

3. West Roxbury Mole Rats (BMU) - No move, but a new logo. The Mole Rats moved away from a realistic portrayal of mutated mole rats of the Wastelands to a cartoonish baseball mole rat.

4, Poseidon Energy Mongrels (BMU) - Poseidon Energy did the same in updating its logo to a cartoonish but still vicious-appearing mongrel.

5. Eastlake Aquaboys (BMU) - They did not change their names, but the Aquaboys moved out of the Natick area of Lake Cochituate to Wayland, Massachusetts. Should they become the Northlake or Northeastlake Aquaboys?

6. Lincoln Flamers (GBRL) - The Corvega Flamers teams is now in Lincoln after a relocation. The CBO had forced the former Corvega team to change its name since Corvega is a league sponsor and the CBO no longer wanted benefits or "free" advertising associated with the company that produces automobiles and assists in engine and parts designs for vertibird production. Since the Flamers are no longer associated with Corvega, they also replaced their logo.

7. Duxbury Glow Jays (GBRL) - The former Big John Salvagers moved to a new city to establish baseball business there. The Glow Jays seems to be a play on a Blue Jays team from Canada in pre-War days.

Nuka Cup Tournament

The Nuka Cup is again aligned into four regional tournaments with the last four teams standing in the 2315 season as hosts: Vault 81, Lexington, University Point, and Easy Town. Each of the hosts have a bye until March 8 when they will face the lowest remaining seed from their regionals as winners of the Play-in Round.

In the Play-in Round, the matchups are the regional's 2nd seed vs 7th seed, 3rd seed vs 6th seed, and 4th seed vs 5th seed. Teams in order of seeding based on their 2315 finish are below:

Vault 81 Regional: Vault 81, Bunker Hill, Glowing Sea, Fort Hagen, Jamaica Plain, Nordhagen Beach, Goodneighbor

Easy Town Regional: Easy Town, Atom, Concord, Roxbury, Nahant, Southie, Starlight

Lexington Regional: Lexington, Diamond City, Malden, Oberland, Cambridge, FHE, County Crossing

University Point Regional: University Point, Salem, Quincy, The Slog, Spectacle Island, Sunshine Tidings, Egret

6 March 2316

Nuka Cup Tournament

The Play-in Round of the 2316 Nuka Cup Tournament is complete, and now we are down to the final 16 teams, or, as the CCBL would call it, the Sweet Sixteen. Below are the results and coming schedule as we enter the double-elimination portion of regional tournaments.

Vault 81 Regional

#7 Goodneighbor 3, #2 Bunker Hill 0
#3 Glowing Sea 2, #6 Nordhagen Beach 1
#4 Fort Hagen 3, #5 Jamaica Plain 0

The Hancocks pulled off a huge surprise by sweeping the 75ers, one of the contending teams in the 2316 season. The Radscorpions and Silver Shroud both handled their business to move on and face each other.

Coming matchups:

#1 Vault 81 vs #7 Goodneighbor
#3 Glowing Sea vs #4 Fort Hagen

Easy Town Regional

#2 Atom 2, #7 Starlight 1
#6 Southie 2, #3 Concord 1
#4 Roxbury 2, #5 Nahant 1

The Brews were the only team to pull off an upset in the first round, rewarded by getting to play against the host for three games. Both Atom and Roxbury were able to hold off upset bids in their series.

Coming matchups:

#1 Easy Town vs #6 Southie
#2 Atom vs #4 Roxbury

Lexington Regional

#7 County Crossing 2, #2 Diamond City 1
#3 Malden 2, #6 FHE 1
#4 Oberland 3, #5 Cambridge 0

Another #7 seed got an upset with one of the most impressive Game One matchups, a pitcher's duel between the Bloodbugs' Shaak Ti and the Swatters' Vim! Pitcher Award winner, Macho Lopez. Ti won that duel, 1-0. Both the Grognaks and T-51s won a battle of higher seeds.

Coming matchups:

#1 Lexington vs #7 County Crossing
#3 Malden vs #4 Oberland

University Point Regional

#2 Salem 2, #7 Egret 1
#6 Sunshine Tidings 2, #3 Quincy 1
#4 The Slog 2, #5 Spectacle Island 1

In the pattern of one upset per regional, the Chemists knocked off Quincy in the Play-in Round, joining fellow NCA teams, the Witch Hats and Ghouls, in the next round.

Coming matchups:

#1 University Point vs # 6 Sunshine Tidings
#2 Salem vs #4 The Slog

We will be back next Monday with a report of which teams hold the Winner's Bracket position and which four teams have been eliminated.
