Deadball Era Jersey Numbers

Since we cant disable jersey numbers (yet) in our games, I was curious what number you guys like to give players in your historical sims—specifically the legends assuming that you would retire their jersey at some point. I'm talking about guys like:

Home Run Baker
Ty Cobb
Eddie Collins
Sam Crawford
Shoeless Joe Jackson
Walter Johnson
Nap Lajoie
Christy Mathewson
Eddie Plank
George Sisler
Tris Speaker
Rube Waddell
Honus Wagner
Ed Walsh
Cy Young

And so on...

What number do these guys look best in and what's your methodology for assigning jersey numbers?

It drives me insane we can't disable or hide jersey numbers, kind of ruins immersion for the dead ball era. Also it's a pain if you have a custom league with historic players because you can't assign the same jersey # for two players, which I know is working as intended, but it'd be nice to just turn off jersey numbers.

Anyway I personally tend to assign them by batting order position. My understanding is in the early years of jersey numbers this was how numbers were assigned (for the most part) since lineups were pretty consistent. I.E. Ruth #3, Gehrig #4 etc. For Pitchers I just start with the lowest # I have after position players, so if I have 13 position players, I'll assign my starting pitchers with #14 to start.

That is correct but strangely enough, kind of impractical to do in OOTP since you can't predict how your AI opponents are gonna set their lineups—especially if you're not using "Historical Lineups and Transactions".
.
Honestly there should be an option to just turn uniform numbers on/off that's gotta be the easiest possible flag you can set

And an option to turn off just retired numbers.

Isn't there, though? Is this not the option you're looking for? Forgive me if I misunderstood.

The on field jerseys won't show numbers, but the players will still have a jersey number

^ This is what I meant—and I'm surprised it could be taken any other way lol that being said, one would think there would be an option in 'team uniforms' to disable uniform numbers

While I understood what you meant, I can see how someone would forget about the number in the player profile.

I don't play out games, and if you asked me what any player I've ever seen in the game's (aside from real players) jersey # was, I couldn't tell you. I often forget they're even there. It's just not an aspect of the game I pay attention to.

Anyway, this went off the rails fast so I'm gonna bring it back to the point of origin. As far as the examples I gave, I always imagine Ty Cobb being a '3', so there is footage of him wearing '25' at the first Yankee Stadium Old timers Game

I would confidently give Eddie Collins 11 because it looks good with his name lol

Nap would probably just get the 1 jersey

I always pictured Christy Mathewson being a 31 or a 34

Waddell would get 44 while Wagner would get 33 since I believe he wore that as a manager\

I'm not 100% about everyone else though. I'd love to hear what numbers users give their guys

Can you not export the rosters, change whoever's numbers to 0 then reimport?
I believe they should keep that number and the game will ignore any conflicts
