Every day my wife points out on youtube or facebook some blockbuster trade that's "going down" any second now, for sure, and it's gonna change the entire face of the NBA. I always point out to her, "Sweetie, that's just some website trying too get people to click on their links."

Good timing. Seldom has anybody up for contract extension or free agency in any professional sport made his case as solidly as this guy did all year and all the way up to the climax: NBA Finals MVP for the championship team.

This goes into a larger problem than the NBA. Really all sports and just people in general. But it is wild just how far lost young people (and older people) can get in their own finances and then it just spirals out of control.

Yes, that's all it was, talk. Going through the motions, if anything. Word is now they are zeroed in on Mike Brown.

He seems like a good choice. But wait! Take a look at his resume. He's been fired four times! If you were working in HR, would you hire this person?

In the stupid NBA, you would. Consider the following:

Brown began coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005. The team reached the 2007 NBA Finals, where they were swept by the San Antonio Spurs. Brown was honored as NBA Coach of the Year for leading the Cavaliers to a team-record and league-best 66 wins in 2009. The Cavaliers won 61 games, again a league-best, in 2010. However, after the Cavaliers lost to the Boston Celtics in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals, Brown was fired.

Brown succeeded Phil Jackson as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011 before being dismissed five games into the 2012–13 season. The 2011–12 season was shortened to 66 games [the Lakers went 41-25, .621] by the lockout that season, and the Lakers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs. Brown's dismissal after five games [the following season] was the third-fastest coaching change in NBA history.

On April 24, 2013, Brown was rehired by the Cavaliers, replacing Byron Scott as head coach. Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said that firing Brown the first time was a "mistake". For the first time as a head coach, Brown's team posted a losing record over an 82-game season as his team was marred by injuries and reported infighting in the locker room. On May 12, 2014, he was fired by Gilbert a second time.

On May 9, 2022, Brown was named the head coach of the Sacramento Kings. In his inaugural season, he coached the Kings to a 48–34 record and the team's first playoff appearance since 2006. He was subsequently named NBA Coach of the Year for the 2022–23 season, receiving 100 votes and becoming the first coach in history to win the award by a unanimous vote. On December 27, 2024, the Kings fired Brown after a 13–18 start to the 2024–25 season.

As ludicrous as all of that sounds, I am groping toward the position wherein I am not overly sympathetic with these head coaches. They have to know what they are getting themselves into, and they accept the money, and they keep their bags packed.

But still, this stupidity sticks in my craw, and it's not about the Knicks but the mindless preoccupation with winning a championship. Not just competing and mostly winning, but winning it all at all costs. And even if you do succeed, do it again immediately or you're fired. It smacks of greed and selfishness and a type of personality that I find abhorrent.

So good luck, Mike! Look to rent; don't buy.
