Has a $ league ever been tried?
Something liek all owners put in some amount (say $5) each season...
The playoff teams, or World Series winner, or best record in reg season or something take home the $, or split it... I'm curious if thias has been tried before, if so, how did it work, if not, is it possible to find enough people who like the idea to make it work... |

Randall - every few months someone suggests it, and then about 500 people explain why it's not feasible and everyone ends up arguing with everyone else about it. I just don't think it would work, and unless you're ready for a big argument about it.... walk away.

I guess it might work with a fantasy draft and only if the commish does not own a team himself but a commish could make an alias and pretend he's not owning it

You'd have to find someone who is trustworthy, I would do it if it was someone I trusted running the league...

Some leagues have done it with varying success. No one single reason will automatically sabotage it, so it can be done.
The idea does appear here often. |

Are there any copyright issues with this idea? I mean doesn't the fact that we're using other people's namesakes while there's money involved mean that we need permission?
I have no idea, that's why I'm asking. Just seems like there could be some legal ramifications to this idea also. |

It might work best if it is done with an established league rather than a startup league.
If everyone is already comfortable with their fellow owners they are playing with and the Commissioner, that may help

Problem outside of trust would be the following... odds are a team is going to turn into crap. That owner will no longer pay for it. And if I'm paying, I wouldn't want to take it over either. It would be very hard to replace that owners team. The only way around that is to have owners pay like 5 seasons up front.

Or you run a fantasy draft every year - that's your other option. Otherwise, for about 9 million different reasons (do a search), it wouldn't work.

I think the best idea for a money league would be to start a league, and then after a few seasons once you know everyone trusts the commissioner and the other general managers, then the idea of making it a money issue should be discussed.

This is kind of weird to say, as you will see, but I would never join a money league.
However, I am the commissioner and an owner in one. It is $3 a season to play and we are in our 4th season. Mark Cooley and I created the league and he had an idea we adopted which is great. The World Series winner gets a gift certificate to the Cooperstown Ballcap Company to get a baseball cap. You can pay season by season, or a bunch of seasons in advance. I won the first 2. Like I said, I am the commissioner so even though people know I cheat, the charm of my personality keeps them coming back. We have had a few owners that paid a few seasons in advance and then quit. There are no refunds and they didn't ask for their money back. Anyhow, I love the cap idea. I think everyone in the league does. It gives us something to "wear over someone's head" when we win. The league is Playball and there are photos from the league's story archives here and here. Anyhow, this is sort of a "money" league with a cap on it. |

Absolutely no problems.
We accept personal check or money order. People mail them in. We used to do paypal, but the amounts are so small, we don't want to give any of the money to a 3rd party. |

PLAYBALL is an excellant league created by Martin and Cooley. I didn't want to use Paypall so I had sent Cooley a personal check.
And, the Cooley Cap is what we all aim for.
