What is Micro Trauma

Life is filled with countless small moments—some joyful, others stressful, and some quietly painful. While most of us know how significant events like a loss or major accident can impact our mental health, the small, subtle injuries to our emotional well-being often go unnoticed.

These are known as micro-traumas.

But what is micro trauma, and how does it affect your mental health over time?

Micro-traumas are the seemingly minor, everyday stressors or emotional wounds that may not feel significant in the moment but can accumulate to create a profound impact.

This article will explore what micro-traumas are, how they manifest, and how you can begin to heal from them.

What Is Micro Trauma?
At its core, a micro-trauma refers to small, repeated emotional or psychological injuries that may go unnoticed or be dismissed as unimportant.

Unlike major traumas, such as abuse or catastrophic events, micro-traumas often stem from subtle experiences, such as being overlooked, excluded, or repeatedly criticized.

While one instance of a micro-trauma may not have a significant effect, the cumulative impact of multiple micro-traumas can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, and even physical symptoms.

Examples:
A teacher consistently overlooking you in class.
Feeling dismissed or unheard during conversations with loved ones.
Experiencing microaggressions or subtle discrimination at work.
Repeatedly being the target of jokes that make you feel small.

So...should my Eric Davis be traumatized when reporters constantly remark that he's hitting below the Mendoza line (.188), or should he take solace by realizing that his OPS+ is a not-awful 94 and that he's still on track for a 3-WAR season?

Should Mario Mendoza be traumatized by having a derogatory term named after him, or should he take solace by realizing that he's remembered five decades later despite an otherwise unremarkable 9-year career in the majors?

OK, WebMD, what's your point? That you're upset that it's a Theme Week?

As someone who actually lived through 1967, I can assure you it was a paingul year. Draft riots, the Newark riots starting up, anti-war protests; much like today.

Saw Mantle/Maris hit home runs at Yankee Stadium in 1961. Took bus with dad to Polo Grounds in 1964, watched one day of Mets 53-109 season. Guys were betting quarters on the next at bats.

Then there was 1969. Freshman at Pitt the last year of Forbes Field. Mets beat Pirates 1-0 twice in doubleheader before their WS run.

Moved to Boston after graduating 1973. Spent an afternoon in right field at Fenway, watching Yastrzemski (the year he won the triple crown)

Paid $300 each to sit by Pesky Pole in 2022.
Everyone around us said it was a checkmark on their bucket lists.

Good thing for Jeter (#2) that Mark Koenig had that number and didn't retire it. He fits nicely into the all-time Yankee lineup batting second in front of Ruth, Gehrig, and DiMaggio.
