Watching the Yankees play in Pittsburgh. The Pirates must have one of the prettiest places to play in the league. Notice how they didn't muck up the view of the skyline, river, or bridge with even a light stanchion. There are two other poles on the stands to the right and that is it.

On the telecast today, when they zoomed over there, I noticed people strolling along that bridge in the background — no vehicular traffic.

That's the Roberto Clemente (Sixth Street) Bridge, one of the Three Sisters Bridges over the Allegheny River. The other two are the Andy Warhol (Seventh Street) Bridge and the Rachel Carson (Ninth Street) Bridge. They were all built in the 1920s and still look beautiful today.

If you go to the Wikipedia article on PNC Park, you can download the jumbo version of the image that I uploaded above. You can zoom in like I did and notice the tents on the bridge.

That photo is from 2016 — no tents today — but the Wikipedia article on the Roberto Clemente Bridge says "It is closed to vehicular traffic on Pirates' and Steelers' game days, providing a pedestrian route to PNC Park and Heinz Field."

Apparently, vendors are occasionally allowed to set up along the bridge, catering to baseball fans enjoying their scenic walk to the ballpark. How cool is that?

The city and people of Pittsburgh deserve a better baseball team than the current Pirates.

I get to see that place a lot on the TV and streams and I love it. It's one of the best, if not the best, ballpark out there. It's a shame their owner hates baseball.

I have said it for many years. It is the most beautiful park in MLB.

Only letdown is you have to watch Pirate baseball 😂

At some point during today's game, the Pirates were actually leading.

And, I found myself . . . almost . . . wanting . . . to, uh, . . . root for them.

What is wrong with me? I was thinking "Well, the Yankees could afford to lose one game, yes?" The answer, of course, is NO! It could all come down to one game in the end.

Am I getting soft in my old age?

I have no idea where the Pinstripers park their players, but the Mets use a team hotel just across the bridge, and Keith Hernandez (and others, I assume) just walk to and from the park.

Keith rhapsodizes about this, every year. (Unless there's a furry convention in town, but that's a different story.)

A State of the Game Interview with Rob Manfred

A Q&A With Rob Manfred, M.L.B.’s Commissioner, on the Future of Baseball

It's an interesting interview but rather long. In another spot, the NYT provides the salient takeaways:

Payroll disparity

Unlike other major American sports, baseball does not have a salary cap, which is used to narrow the gap between the richest and poorest teams. Some M.L.B. owners are pushing the league to adopt a salary cap as part of their next contract with the players’ union.

Manfred told us in an interview at his office in New York that he believes the financial imbalance is an existential problem for the sport. “We sell entertainment that’s based on competition,” he said. “If people don’t believe there’s competition, you’ve got a product problem.”

The problem: Players vehemently oppose a salary cap and many insist that they would never agree to play under one. Their union argues that players deserve to be compensated, without restriction, for the work they do.

Last time the owners made a real push for a cap, in 1994, it resulted in a 232-day strike, a canceled World Series and years of fan frustration. The current contract is set to expire after next season. If the owners make another push for a cap, another painful work stoppage could follow.

Baseball’s future

In his interview with The Times, Manfred also spoke about a range of other topics concerning the present and future of the sport, including:
  • Torpedo bats: The new, oddly shaped bats that caused a frenzy when the Yankees used them to hit several home runs are legal and “absolutely good for baseball,” Manfred said.
  • Robot umpires: “The experiment was really successful,” Manfred said about the computerized challenge system for balls and strikes that the league tested during spring training. He hopes to use it in the regular season as soon as next year.
  • Pitching injuries: Manfred warned that pitching “is getting taught in a way that emphasizes velocity and spin rate,” which puts additional strain on pitchers’ elbows. “By the time we get guys,” he said, “they’re already damaged goods.”
  • What would make the game better: Recent rule changes have led to more action on the field, which Manfred thinks is key to the sport’s future. “Action, movement, the ability to show how athletic you are,” he said. “Any changes that allow the showcasing of the athleticism of your players is huge.”

So then what, a salary floor? Spend $80M on payroll or sell?

My rule for watching games this season. I immediately turn off any game in which one of the talking heads says velo. I doubt I will see a full game all season.

I don't think I've ever heard "velo" on a telecast, tbh. SNY will show an "exit velocity" graphic once per game, but Gary Cohen says the full word.

(I suppose Suck-Up Smoltz might have said it, but of course I immediately purge all thought of him from my mind.)

I can imagine Ron Darling saying it. That's what you get from getting infected with all kinds of humbug on national TV. I can also imagine Keith Hernandez saying it, ironically, in a blowout of at least nine runs.

Anyway. It's the new "launch angle". They'll have something else in two years, and it will be no less annoying. Maybe it's a "shotgun chart", or "mitten points". Or the all-important "sandwich factor".

I just watch the games and be merry.

But one of our "dearly" departed forum members (he was banned for being a loud mouth and abusive, hence the quotes), once made a very good point (which was a frustrating thing about him; he did make some very good points).

He said, look at it this way: The Jays probably know that Vladdy is going to stink toward the end of his contract. No worries, they will carry him. What they will be paying for in the last, say, four years of his contract is really spreading the cost of, say, ten superlative years over a total of 14 years. Teams benefit from deferred salary payments.
