Whitey Wietelmann 1966
Did not know that the 1975 SSPC set had nice color portraits of several San Diego coaches.
Here's Whitey, one of the original Pads coaching staff. I've seen in him in black and white before, but not color. (He wore his brown & yellow from 1969-1979.) Bonus: Whitey in the new 1978 uniforms, from his Wikipedia page. |

Dick Sisler 1961
After taking a four-year break to run the recreation programs for the Tennessee Dept. of Corrections, Sisler returned to coaching with the 1975 Padres. Fired as hitting coach after 1976, he returned with the 1979 Mets, but quit during the 1980 season. Thus providing actual evidence that people would rather spend time in prison than with the Joe Torre Mets. ![]() Last edited by Amazin69; 05-18-2023 at 03:39 PM. |

Jim Davenport 1970
Davenport had left his long-term organization (San Francisco) because the Giants wouldn't promote him from managing Phoenix (1971-1973) when they fired Charlie Fox. (Instead they hired Wes Westrum. Yes, really.) So Davenport spent 1974-1975 coaching for John McNamara in San Diego. Then in 1976, Bill Rigney returned for one season at the helm, and Davenport went back to the bay. (He coached under five different managers before getting his own [disastrous] turn at the helm in 1985.) |

Phil Cavarretta 1961
We have "Philliabuck" in the Topps Vault shot of his coaching the 1966 Indians, but here he is with his first coaching gig, 1961-1963, under Bob Scheffing in Detroit.
Offered for sale by Steiner Sports. |

Red Schoendienst 1963
We had some B/W images of Red with the 1977 A's (after Keith Hernandez and the 1976 Cardinals "got Red fired", as Keith glumly recounted on a Mets telecast once), but this Doug McWilliams Hall of Fame color version is, naturally, a cut above:

More McWilliams; here's Don McMahon marking time in Minnesota (1976) between his two stints as the Giants' pitching coach.

Otis "Doc" Crandall 1931
The former NY Giants pitcher starts a 4-year coaching stint for the Pirates, under manager Jewel Ens.
From the current RMY auction. (I've removed the yellowing and tweaked the shadows.) The fellow at the left is identified as Phil Sinnott…which would help if i had a clue who that was. (I know Phil Lynott and Joe Sinnott, but it's neither of them.) George Gibson took over as manager for 1932, and was in turn replaced during the 1934 season by Pie Traynor. Traynor let Crandall go from the staff for 1935, and replaced him with…Jewel Ens. The Wheel in the Sky keeps on turning Oh, I don't know where I'll be tomorrow… (With acknowledgements to Robert Fleischmann) |

Ed Walsh Sr., 1928
Uniform variant, with Ed sporting the White Sox's 1929-only striped blue cap.
From the same RMY auction, with my once more eliminating the yellowing and dealing with the shadow. Unfortunately, the picture had too much glare behind Ed, so I was limited in what I could do. |

Ken Berry, Roving Instructor
Berry never had a formal major league coaching stint, but according to Jerry Reuss (who was starting his photography hobby as his career was winding down), Berry was working throughout the ChiSox organization as a roving batting, outfield, and baserunning instructor. Here he is with the big club at Comiskey, on May 11, 1988. |

Don Rowe 1988
Rowe's picture in the Coaches Pack shows him during his 7-year stint (1992-1998) as the Brewer's pitching coach, but while his first coaching gig (1988 White Sox) was nearly as brief as his playing career (1963 Mets), that's a year more than most get.
May 10, 1988. The White Sox finish their road trip at Yankee Stadium, and Jerry Reuss snaps Rowe as he visits Monument Park. (Reuss also took a picture of Ricky Horton at the monuments, but we know what Ricky looks like.) |

Tom Morgan 1979
The Yankee pitching coach who lasted two-and-a-half months on the job in 1979 (kinda long for one of them in those days) before Billy Martin returned as manager and brought his buddy Art Fowler back to go drinking with.
I once compiled a chronological list of Yankee coaches during the George "I Hate Them More Than I Do Managers" George Steinbrenner era. I think this is the correct sequence: 1975 Whitey Ford (ill, replaced mid-year by Cloyd Boyer) 1976 Bob Lemon 1977 Cloyd Boyer, Art Fowler (joined team late in year) 1978 Art Fowler (fired when Billy Martin was); Clyde King 1979 Tom Morgan, Art Fowler 1980 Stan Williams 1981 Stan Williams (fired), Jerry Walker (interim), Clyde King 1982 Jerry Walker (fired), Stan Williams (fired), Clyde King, Sammy Ellis (replaced King when King became the third manager of the season) 1983 Art Fowler (fired), Jeff Torborg (shifted from bullpen coach, Sammy Ellis replaced him as bullpen coach) 1984 Sammy Ellis and Jeff Torborg (co-coaches until June 18), Mark Connor (Torborg moved to bullpen) 1985 Mark Connor and Jeff Torborg (co-coaches), Bill Monbouquette (replaced Connor, August) 1986 Sammy Ellis (fired), Mark Connor 1987 Mark Connor, Stan Williams 1988 Art Fowler (fired), Stan Williams 1990-92 Mark Connor I assume this was what Morgan was wondering about when I caught him with my lens. |

BTW you're welcome on the SSPC coaches cards. Mike Aronstein had originally planned for the final 30 cards of the set to be All-Stars. I said "why just repeat 30 guys and put a puzzle back on them when you have photos of guys you've left out and you could put in a card of Karl Kuehl and another of Gene Mauch - and great coaches like Jimmie Reese). Mike "rewarded" me by putting my writing credit on the back of Reese's #630 card lol
