Georgia-Notre Dame will be interesting. Georgia a 2 point favorite with a backup QB. It either says a lot about Georgia in how strong they are or it says ND is vastly over rated.
With NIL and the portal the group of 5 are losing their better players to the power 4. Will the group of 5 be included in the CFP in the future? Including them is costing the playoffs/ESPN some money due to anticipated lower viewership.

They really have to fix the rules to count the Bowls as part of the regular season and put an end to this "opting out" crap. You're not gonna get hurt; you've bought insurance with your NIL money, it's ONE more freaking game. Finish the damn job!
I mean, it's not as if the Gamecocks don't have options to replace Kyle Kennard and Rocket Sanders, but damn it, this season has been a (largely feel-good) story, and it just feels wrong to have key players missing from the final chapter. We're all still fuming because we got screwed out of the playoffs when the chicken-porking refs stole the LSU game by calling that idiotic "roughing" penatly on Kennard on Nick Emmanwari's pick-six that was called back; Kennard should be here as we finish the story by knocking Illinois's teeth down their mouth, just as we would have done to Boise State (or whomever) if given the chance. Fannish hyperbole, yes, but it's so damn stupid to destroy the idea of being part of a team right before the season ends. Close EVERYTHING down until February; no opt-outs, no declaring for the draft, no transfer portal. Let's be done with 2024 before start on 2025, ffs. |

the problem with stopping the transfer portal until Feburary is that even if only technically depending on sport and school the players are still considered students. With alot of the schools starting the new semester before Feburary there is no choice but to have the transfer portal now.

The main problem w/college sports is that the people who know what big time collegiate athletics is are being blocked by those who want college sports to be what they falsely thought it to be.
I've said this for about 20 years in online debates. Too many of the academics in charge think we are still in the 1870's. Sports at universities used to be part of the educational system because it was thought physical exercise was part of making the well-rounded gentleman ready to be a functioning part of society. Graduates were expected to become businessmen, tradesmen, etc. Not professional athletes. Men who made a living playing sports were considered low brow, laborers, the bottom of society which no self respecting man would ever aspire to be. That is no longer the case. Ever since Red Grange signed w/the Bears, big time college athletics has been on a steady march towards what it is currently : A money making machine designed to give the university a high profile & keep alumni invested in what goes on back @ the campus.. It is not for the educational experience of the student. It is for the university endowment and donations to keep colleges profitable. Look at your logos. How many of your schools have a logo w/your mascot in gloves & a turtleneck sweater w/a big block letter on the front? Maybe a cap w/the school name on it? Know why? Cause most schools competed for decades w/o an official nickname. Then they realized they could sell merchandise if the school team had a mascot & a logo to match. So they all went to the same guy virtually @ the same time to make their trademark & voila! The light bulb went off. Team sports made money & expanded the school's reach. That is what sports has been doing for colleges now for over a century. Get in a bowl game? Make the Final Four? Win a title? Alumni come back to campus. The treasury is filled w/application fees. New wings & research buildings are funded. But the presidents have been trying to fool people into thinking the game is exclusively for educational purposes. "They are not there to build future professional athletes. They are there just to build professionals." So they have been using the football & basketball player (mainly low income, disadvantaged populations) for profit while claiming they are there to give them an education. And patted themselves on the back for it. "Look at what charitable work they are doing." Which would have been fine except for one thing: They refused to allow the kids to get what they were worth. That's slavery. I know. You're all mad now. That word invokes some negative imagery of whipping, beatings, & lynchings. Except that isn't me making that comparison. That is the NCAA itself. They are the ones who attempted to defend themselves in court w/the 13th amendment & claimed the "slavery exception" allowed them to install the system they had. Look it up. So don't get mad at me. Get mad at the college academics. They knew what they were doing. They were imposing slave like conditions on these 18-22 yr olds. But that court case shows something. Players no longer are blinded by the "education" smoke screen. Being a professional athlete is no longer a step above gravedigger. They are millionaires. Some have made it to billionaire. Medal moguls. Politicians. Activists. Entreprenuers. And even if they don't "make it", some make contacts that allow them careers w/in the orbit of their sport. They aren't the denizens, but often potential leaders in society. The 1870's thinking doesn't work anymore. And it shouldn't. How can society ever improve if it remains stagnant? College football should be no different. It is time for the old-fashioned sentimental way of running the game to be abolished. The bowl system should be trashed. The classroom & the locker room should be two hands that have no knowledge of what the other is doing. And the university presidents should stop trying to straddle the fence & make a decision on what they want sports to be on their campus: An advertising arm for their school, or a recreational activity for their students.. It is no longer possible to be both. Not to the degree it has become now. Because players aren't going to go back to the way things were. None of that "Rah, rah, sis, boom, bah!" stuff resonates anymore. Playing for a trophy is cute. But doing what is best to reach a career goal that could get you & your family into financial comfort is more important. That is what everyone of us would do in our professions & the kids have every right to do the same. So everyone needs to wake up & realize change isn't afoot. It is here. And the evolution is continuous. The college presidents need to recognize not every school has the same goal w/their sports programs. There needs to be a split. Probably multiple splits. Most traditions are sentimental anchors delaying the inevitable. Time to wish them on their merry way like Sears & Roebuck. While some fans will hate the change, believe the chaotic anarchy football & basketball has become is also losing fans. A lot of people won't like the above. That is fine. You have every right to feel that way. But don't confuse like/dislike for right/wrong. Because there is nothing wrong about it. There is nothing sinful with a university putting their name on a team that has nothing to do with "higher learning" anymore than FedEx putting their name on an arena or stadium that has zilch to do w/shipping packages. Move forward. Say hello to 2025.

and even for those who don't stay in their sport after their time in the NCAA ends they could potentially make contacts in their chosen field.
Though the farther down level wise you go the more likely that academics are the basis for the player and the athletic are more for fun. Even for D1 very few players make it to the big league. With an even smaller amount making a sustained career out of it. Whether through injuries or lack of drive/talent. For example according to the list I got from ESPN the football programs of Colorado and Colorado State have the same amount of players (8) on NFL rosters. |

true. another example is golf. Until about 100 years ago pro golfers were severly limited if not outright banned form using the clubhouses even when playing tournaments/ working at the courses. |

Give them a playbook, let them use some NIL $ to hire some pros to work out with. They'll stay in shape, they can fine-tune the details in the summer. Is it an issue? Yes. Is it insurmountable? IMO, no. |

I didn't see this yesterday & didn't know about this "signal". But Beamer has some nerve being offended at another coach's anger about what he did. This absolutely puts player safety @ peril. I want to punch him myself.

Fat Scum Bielema has ****ING NERVE trying to complain about CAROLINA pulling a trick play based on signals when he spent the ENTIRE GAME exploiting a loophole in the substitution rules, where the idea that if offense makes a substitution, the defense is allowed to reply and the play clock keeps running, so every time Carolina would put in a sub on offense, the Faking Illini would do their substitutes, but slooowly, and then bring on MORE players, even more slooooowly and again, making a joke of the game in order to make Carolina not be able to snap the ball and costing the Gamecocks a timeout that proved crucial down the stretch.
And this story assumes that Bielema was making the T-Bar about when USC did on the kickoff, whereas the ABC announcing crew (Mark Jones, Rod Jones) calling the game thought that Bielema was taunting Beamer about his having to blow the timeout. (Mark Jones noted that officials are quick to call taunting on players given the slightest provocation, but they almost never call it on coaches. The fact that Mark Jones is black whereas a significant preponderance of coaches are white may not be why Jones's mind went there, but that's the hypothesis that leapt to my mind, anyhow) And, no, this isn't my partisan reaction alone. ABC's rules expert Bill Lemonnier said that Bielema was "exploiting the rules", that he had "gone over the line" and "should have been flagged". I grant you that it's possible Lemonnier's last two comments may have been about the perceived taunting and that might not have been taunting, but portraying Bielema as an innocent angel victimized by Dirty Cheating Beamer is spin that makes as much sense as claiming that today's a great day to visit New Orleans, IMO. Obviously, the Rules Committee needs to fix this. If the offense makes a sub, the defense can make a counter-sub, but only the same amount of players, only immediately in response to the offensive subs, only once rather than in multiple waves, and the defensive players only have five seconds to get off the field before the ball is ready to play and if they can't get their asses off of the field (rather than doing an impression of Jabba the Hutt on Quaaludes), the offense can snap the ball and get a 12-man penalty on the defense as punishment. It's disgusting that Bielema spent the month before the game dreaming up this crap, instead of actually planning plays. Also, the Illini faked cramps on defense several times to get a break when they needed a rest (gosh, so odd that none of the Illinois offensive players cramped up! I guess the O knows how to hydrate, huh?), but that's an old, old scam. Notre Dame pulled it so often under Ara Parseghian that they were known as "The Fainting Irish" and Mississippi was keeping the tradition alive this year. (Not that Ol' Piss needed it against us; they were the only team to legitimately beat us all year. The refs stole the LSU game, we choked at Alabama because we didn't really think we could win in Tuscalossa, and now this bullspit, but the Rebels got us good. No complaints about that one.) So why did the refs let Bielema get away with it? I think they were afraid. ![]() Afraid of being eaten, I mean. I mean, damn, I've been fat since before puberty, but I've never been FAT like that. I don't think I could eat that much. Man must have a size 60 waist. (I'd like to say "to go along with his 60 IQ", but clearly Bielema is at least clever. Not very ethical, but that's a different story.) If you can't beat 'em, cheat 'em, I guess. (Or perhaps, eat 'em, as noted above.) Here is an actually honest report of the confrontation. Beamer sure as fudge thought Bielema was taunting him (as did ABC, as did everybody watching), that's for sure. Yeah, that smirking pig is totally concerned about player safety, you bet! I believe that as much as I believe in Santa Claus. FFS. Last edited by Amazin69; 01-01-2025 at 03:36 PM. |

After what feels like 15 years of getting shafted by the CFB committee it's sweet as hell seeing PSU/ND in the semis. As a PSU fan this was always my favorite rivalry and it sucked when they stopped playing each other (ND and Pitt should be on our schedule every year). And while I don't want to look ahead, if they win it would probably be PSU/OSU for all the chips. If that happens I can't imagine a better way to close the season out, even if we lose, other than maybe if we could have had Michigan instead of Boise St.

I don’t mind Penn State in the semis but the way seeding was done, they had a nice path. I think OSU and Texas are the 2 best teams in the playoffs. Georgia may have been up there if it wasn’t for their regular QB being injured, stupid penalties, dropped passes, and out coached. And their punter got knocked down 2 plays in a row by the same guy?? And only 5 yard penalties? (And I like ND more than Georgia).
Also saw that Kirby Smart’s father passed away after the game. I think it was from a fall.

The misery of being a UNC football fan...............ESPN.com has an article declaring that for whoever among who is left that wins the title, it will be a long time coming.
Penn St last won the national "title" in 1986, Notre Dame 1988, Texas 2005, & Ohio St 2014. UNC last won the ACC title in 1980.

Legit did not know there was a semi-final on tonight. Thursday and Friday is such a loser schedule. Have the guts to go up against the NFL, kids.
I mean, I don't mind missing a Notre Dame game (especially with those ***************** back in the title game, which is pretty much living a nightmare), but still. I better see dominance from SOMEBODY tonight so I can have faith that the Goddamn Domers will get turned into a smear in the final. (Fun fact: the reason I became a USC fan is because they get a chance to beat the **** out of ND every season. Pete Carroll is pretty much a god to me. Die, Irish, DIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! ) |

There is probably more money in it for him. Not to mention the Bulldog WR corps was rather poor last year. Miami is set up nice to enter the playoff next year too. Beat the Irish opening week & then they leave Florida only 3x's next season.

My pretty large extended family is split between Notre Dame and Ohio State fans. So my text messages today have reminded me that there no more insufferable fans in all of American sports than Buckeye fans! They are already gloating...
Raider fans would be up there, but their team's near-perpetual ineptitude keeps their fans from being too obnoxious... And Laker fans are right up there. Although, thankfully, the silver-lining of the presence of LeBron has soured a lot of Laker fans (that I know) on them... Last edited by thehef; 01-12-2025 at 09:27 PM. |
