Coldest move as a GM
As we come up to Christmas I started thinking about all the nice things in life but then also about the coldest move made as a GM.
I signed a guy to a minor league deal that converted to a Major League deal worth $1.5 million if promoted within 30 days of the season starting. He gets hurt 2 days into spring training and instead of sending to the IL I just cut him. Sorry dude, my GM heart is made of pure ice. Anyway, does anyone else have some "cold" moves you've made as a GM?

Put a guy on the 60 day IL that had a minor bruise from hbp so I could hide him there the rest of the year

It's funny this popped up.
I just read yesterday that the Braves, I think this year, put a guy on waivers just hours before he was scheduled to throw out the first pitch to his dad. I think it was around Father's Day! Now that's cold!

I've played the "DFA shuffle" from time to time, where you DFA a guy who's potentially helpful depth, then wait out the DFA period, then briefly add him back to the roster, rinse and repeat.
And I've certainly shamelessly manipulated service time many a time... And benched players that are about to reach their vesting options for the rest of the season if I don't want them back |
