Rule 9.16 (i--comment)--Individual earned run, team unearned run
An interesting situation came up in a game I just simmed. Blue Jays vs. White Sox. Bottom 5, Jays up 3-1.
Bryse Wilson starts out the inning with a strikeout and a flyout. Then a routine ground ball is muffed by shortstop Sergio Escalante. Open the floodgates. The runner steals second and is driven in by a single. Then an RBI double and a walk. Bring in the reliever Robert Garcia. Runners on first and second, two out. Three straight RBI singles before a fly out ends it. Five runs. How many are earned and how many unearned? There are two answers here. For the team, all five runs are unearned, as the inning would have ended scoreless if not for the error. However, for Garcia, the third RBI single results in an earned run since it scored a runner he allowed on base without an error being involved. So in the official MLB stats, this is a case where the number of earned runs for pitchers individually would differ from the number allowed by the team. I first saw this as a footnote in the official stats in the mid-80's. From the MLB rulebook: Rule 9.16(i) Comment: It is the intent of Rule 9.16 (i) to charge a relief pitcher with earned runs for which such relief pitcher is solely responsible. In some instances, runs charged as earned against the relief pitcher can be charged as unearned against the team. Last edited by eauhomme; 12-10-2024 at 09:38 PM. |

Did OOTP's stats conform to the MLB rulebook?
