Excessive shots by defensemen

Using the 2D engine, I am consistently getting unrealistically high shot totals for defensemen across the NHL. Regardless of the role applied to a given defensemen (two-way, mobile, stay-at-home, etc.), and regardless of the applicable team's tactics, the SOG leaders are dominated by defensemen. I have tried this over multiple saves and always have the same issue. In the screenshot below, I am a month into the season, and 15 of the top 25 SOG leaders are dmen. For the NHL's 23-24 season, you have to go all the way down to the 99th SOG leader before you hit the 15th dman; only one dman (Roman Josi) was in the top 25.

Any idea what's going on here? Seems to be a pretty massive issue if the 2D sim engine is aiming for realism. It also seems like this issue has been long standing based on the text below from a 2022 thread on FHM 9. In addition to general shot total issues, I also see the same issues when watching the 2D engine where, e.g., my team will have a clean 2 on 0, but the forwards will drop pass to a covered defenseman instead of taking a shot. The 2D engine doesn't seem to approximate what actually happens in a hockey game.

What is going on here?

2022 thread: "Shots by defensemen seem unrealistically high to me. In a custom league I've set up 15 of the top 30 shots on goal are from D whereas in the NHL just 4 of the top 30 are. Also, watching a number of games in 2D it appears that no matter what offensive system is employed forwards just put the puck back to D men who shoot from the blue line."

Agree completely, this has also been raised in another thread "defenders shooting too much" so hoping it gets added to a list of 2D/gameplay issues that will be addressed in the next patch.

Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy. I only searched for shots / SOG, so I totally missed that other thread... good to see it's on the team's radar.

Agree. 6 of my top 10 league leaders in shots are D-men.
