Hope in Beantown
While I continue to play (and enjoy) my historical Boston Americans franchise thread, I realized that I missed playing out the modern game as well. Because I am still using OOTP 23, I am starting a Boston Red Sox franchise thread for the 2022 MLB season.
Now admittedly, this may not be something that lasts very long but I wanted to give it a shot. Moreover, I started the "Baseball in Boston" thread because the 2022 "real-life" Boston season did not go well (5th in the AL East, 6 games under .500%). I am optimistic that I can do better than a last-place finish, but I am looking to find that right balance where I can cut salary and find future talent without tanking for a few years. Similar to the other franchise thread, I will act as GM and Manager, though relying on my coaching staff as needed. Trading is set to hard, favor prospects, injuries off (just hate that part of the game/life), fatigue and trading set to low, and trading of draft picks allowed. The Owner will control the budget and I am vulnerable to termination if I fail to live up to the Owner's expectations. I sim out the games (an occasional time where I may watch), but will not control the in-game decision making.

Team Snapshot
A high-level overview of the Boston Red Sox as we gear up for the 2022 season.
My top players include Chris Sale, Xander Bogaerts, and Garrett Whitlock. Sale can be a dominant pitcher, but his age (32) and annual salary ($30M) does give me some pause. I need to decide whether to stick with him or look for ways to salary dump without affecting the team too much. The rookies seems promising, especially Marcelo Mayer. As shown, the "Team Position Rankings" don't look too promising and there is much work to be done. From the standpoint of who I will shuffle around / move, I will want to find a new home for Trevor Story. Never had been a fan of his, and he is on the books for far too much money and years (at least 6 years for a total of $135M that I have no control over). My owner (John Henry) may prove to be difficult, as he is "Demanding" and an "Economizer" so I will have to tread carefully. With that said, the goals he assigned me for the 2022 season is simply "Achieve a Winning Record" and the current 2023 goal is to "Sign Rich Hill" to an extension. Seems doable.

Pitching Staff
The Red Sox are set to go with a 5-man pitching rotation that is anchored by All-Star Chris Sale. I think Whitlock has the potential for a big season and feel good about Eovaldi. If the opportunity presents itself, I am not opposed to moving on from Paxton. Not sure what to make of Tanner Houck, as he might need a little more Triple-A seasoning.
The bullpen has some age on it, so that may be another opportunity to find a trading partner. I think that Matt Barnes can hold his own, but it may be wise to shore up my bullpen quality. Not very excited about my set-up men.

Batting Lineup
While this is hardly a "Murder's Row" lineup, there is some pop in the there and, if the stars align, could be some development opportunities for a breakout season.

Team Finances
I am not going to pretend to understand the financial screen. What I do know is that I have some money to spend if the right deal comes along.

MLB's Top Prospects
What a list! The top 3 MLB prospects of Bobby Witt Jr., Julio Rodriguez, and Adley Rutschman are of the caliber that can anchor a team for many years. The Red Sox have the #4 overall ranked prospect with Marcelo Mayer.
From an overall team view, the Baltimore Orioles occupy the top spot with 157 total points (#3, #8, #16, and #28 prospects). The bottom spot is held by the Milwaukee Brewers with 0 points and no Top-100 prospects. Boston ranks 5th overall with 101 total points (#4 - Mayer, #25 - Casas, #42 - Yorke, and #68 - Bello).

Boston Deals Story to St. Louis
As I try to find the right balance between fielding a competitive team and building a sustainable contender, it may be necessary to move on from an established players whose contract conflicts with my long-term plans. Today was one of those moments.
Here, I found a trading partner with the St. Louis Cardinals. The details are the Boston Red Sox sent 29-year old 2B Trevor Story (.251/.329/.471 in 595 PA, 3.9 WAR, 2-time All-Star, 2-time Silver Slugger, 25.1 career WAR) and 25-year old RP Cody Scroggins (4-2, 8 Saves in 48 2/3 IP at A / A+; 9th round 2019 draft) to the St. Louis Cardinals in return for 26-year old Tommy Edman (.262/.308/.387 in 691 PA, 1.9 WAR, 1-time Gold Glove; 6th round 2016 draft), 22-year old SP Ian Bedell (0-1 in 2 2/3 IP at A+; 4th round 2020 draft), 23-year old CL Freddy Pacheco (1-0, 11 Saves in 54 IP at A+ / AA / AAA), 19-year old SP Jose Davila (1-4 in 53 2/3 IP at R / A), and $210,000 in cash considerations. The Cardinals retained 70% of Edman's salary ($490,000). This move was driven by salary, as the Red Sox were on the hook for at least $110,000,000 for the next five years. If Story did not opt out of the contract following the 2026 season it would tack on another guaranteed $25,000,000 to the team. With Edman, I have him on his current 1-year deal that his salary was covered (or cash given) by St. Louis, followed by arbitration years. Clearly Story is the better hitter, but I like Edman's defense and speed. Will see if this was a wise move.

Owner's Season Expectation
Received word from Boston Red Sox owner John Henry that he expects me to lead the team to a winning season. I am optimistic that this will happen.

Game 1: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees (Opening Day!)
It's Opening Day in the Bronx, as historic rivals square off to launch the 2022 season. Playing before a crowd of 52,296 passionate fans, the visiting Boston Red Sox (1-0) topped the New York Yankees (0-1) by a 7 to 1 score.
In a match-up that paired two legitimate aces, Boston's Chris Sale (1-0) picked up the win after tossing 5 scoreless innings in which he scattered 2 hits and struck out 4 in his 88-pitch outing; Game Score 67. Michael Wacha covered the next 3 innings but allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits and 1 walk before turning the ball over to Rich Hill for the final scoreless inning. Gerrit Cole (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 1 walk in 5 1/3 innings of play; Game Score 35. Clarke Schmidt covered the final 3 2/3 innings in a scoreless, hitless outing. The Red Sox offense was fairly well distributed, as 7 of 9 batters recorded a hit led by Bobby Dalbec (1 for 3, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, Walk), Enrique Hernandez (1 for 4, Double, 2 RBIs), and Jackie Bradley Jr. (1 for 2, Homerun, Run, 2 RBIs, Walk, Sacrifice Fly). The Yankees were led at the plate by Isiah Kiner-Falefa (2 for 4, Run), Joey Gallo (1 for 3, Walk), and Anthony Rizzo (1 for 3, Hit by Pitch). Player of the Game: Chris Sale (Season: #1 / Career: #1) AL East Standings: 1st Place

Free Agent Signing: Jeremiah Estrada
The Boston Red Sox announced that they had agreed to a minor-league free agent contract with 23-year old CL Jeremiah Estrada. While he missed the entire 2018 and 2020 season due to injury, Estrada's scout metrics are still fairly promising that something good is still in his future. Estrada was selected in the 6th round of the 2017 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs. To date, Estrada has a career record of 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 40 innings of work across R, A-, and A leagues.

Game 2: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
The long-ball was the downfall of Boston today, as Joey Gallo powered the New York Yankees (1-1) to a 7 to 3 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox (1-1).
Neither starter factored into the decision, though both pitched well enough to give their respective teams a chance. For the Yankees, Luis Severino went 5 2/3 innings in which he allowed 3 earned runs on 9 hits, 2 walks, and 1 wild pitch while striking out 7; Game Score 44. Jonathan Loaisiga (1-0) picked up the win for his 2 1/3 innings of 1 hit ball before turning it over to Aroldis Chapman (SV 1) for 1 inning of work to closeout out the game by striking out the 3 batters faced. On the other side of the scorecard, Nathan Eovaldi went 5 innings in which he permitted 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6 in his 105-total pitches; Game Score 46. Nick Pivetta (0-1) was tagged with the loss after he served up 4 earned runs on 4 hits, 2 walks in 1 1/3 innings of play. Matt Strahm wrapped things up in his 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball. Both teams found success at the plate, though the Yankees more so. Leading the way for the home team was Joey Gallo (3 for 4, 2 Homeruns, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, Walk), Anthony Rizzo (4 for 5, 2 Doubles, 2 RBIs), and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (2 for 5, Double, Run, 2 RBIs). For Boston, Xander Bogaerts (2 for 5), Enrique Hernandez (2 for 4, Run, 2 RBIs), and Jackie Bradley Jr. (1 for 3, Double, Walk). Player of the Game: Joey Gallo AL East Standings: Tied 2nd Place; 1 GB

Game 3: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
A bullpen meltdown cost Boston the victory today, as the New York Yankees (2-1) used a 3-run 8th inning to top the visiting Boston Red Sox (1-2) by a 3 to 2 score.
As was the case in yesterday's game, neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. For New York, Jordan Montgomery went 7 innings in which he allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits, 2 walks, and 1 wild pitch while striking out 5; Game Score 62. Domingo German (1-0) picked up the win for his 1 inning of scoreless / hitless ball. Aroldis Chapman (SV 2) pitched a perfect 9th inning to earn the save. In his 2 outings this season, Chapman has struck out each batter faced (6 batters - 6 strikeouts). For Boston, Garrett Whitlock lasted 5 1/3 scoreless innings in which he scattered 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 64. Ryan Brasier provided solid relief support (no runs, no hits) before turning the ball over to Jake Diekman (0-1) who was tagged with the loss after permitting 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits. While Diekman gets the blemish on his record, it was Matt Barnes (BS 1) who deserves the blame, as the closer allowed 3 consecutive walks which directly led to 2 runs scoring. Offense today was tame by yesterday's standards, as the Yankees were led by Kyle Higashioka (2 for 3, Homerun, Run, RBI), Isiah Kiner-Falefa (2 for 4), and Josh Donaldson (0 for 2, RBI, 2 Walks). Boston's limited offense was generated by Jackie Bradley Jr. (1 for 3, Homerun, Run, RBI), Christian Vazquez (1 for 3, Double), and Rafael Devers (1 for 3, Run, Walk). Player of the Game: Jordan Montgomery AL East Standings: Tied 3rd Place; 2 GB

Game 4: Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers
Well different city but same result, as the Boston Red Sox (1-3) fell to the hometown Detroit Tigers (2-2) by a 6 to 2 score.
Tigers starter Michael Pineda (1-0) picked up the win by limiting the opposition to 2 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 in 7 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 62. Matt Manning (SV 1) covered the final 1 1/3 innings in a scoreless effort to close out the game. h Player of the Game: Derek Hill AL East Standings: Tied 3rd Place; 3 GB
