Seattle Thunder - Need advice on my team
I've been playing Perfect Team for a short while. I've advanced to the Iron League now, but my team sucks REAL BAD! I'm sure that's due to the difficulty as my team advances. I started out with a 3 - 19 record. I had saved over 100,000 points, so I purchased as many diamond packs as I could and reshaped my pitching rotation according to who had the best stuff from best to worst. I don't know if that's a good idea, but it's what I done. For my lineup, I had the bench coach set everything up & I noticed that it chose the best players according to their card value. I asked the pitching coach to setup the bullpen, and interestingly it stayed the same except it chose a different closer.
It's now the start of May and I've only won three more games! Was my decision to replace the pitching staff and lineup with better players according to their card value a poor decision? Anyway, here is a history of how well (or terrible) my team has done so far: Year Level Record PCT Rank Playoffs Playoff Result 2049 Rookie 104 58 0.642 1 Yes Lost Pennant 2050 Stone 47 115 0.290 5 No None 2051 Rookie 91 71 0.562 2 Yes Lost Division 2052 Rookie 90 72 0.556 1 Yes Don't Remember 2053 Rookie 105 57 0.648 1 Yes Lost World Series 2054 Stone 78 84 0.481 3 No None 2055 Stone 78 84 0.481 3 No None 2056 Stone 85 77 0.525 2 No None 2057 Stone 91 71 0.562 2 Yes Lost World Series As you can see, my team has done pretty decently with only three (perhaps eventually four at the end of this season?) losing seasons. I will admit this is my first time playing Perfect Team, so I'm clueless at how card ratings work, because it seems that's not all that important in determining how they perform during a season. P.S. - Sorry about the way the forum "scrunches" up my year-by-year record. When I was editing it showed up in a similar way as it did when I looked at it when I logged into my account on the web and I thought it would post that way here. Buying packs is usually a bad idea
You bought what, 7 diamond packs for your 100K points?
You could have bought 3 pretty good players for 30K each. Diamond outfielders Rickey Henderson and Devon White both have L10's in the very low 30's. 100 OVR starters Roger Clemens and Warren Spahn are both in the same range. You can just go into the card shop and put in the max you want to spend per player and it will show you who's for sale at that price. And if you want to bargain shop a bit, you can put in, say, 35K for what you want to spend and then put in a bid for 30K on players that interest you. Also, at this time of year live perfects can usually be had for 25K. Live cards typically don't perform as well as historicals with the same card rating, but they still will beat the heck out of a lot of randomly selected historical diamonds. |

I don't want to be mean here because we were all where you are at some point, but setting 100k on fire on bad packs is pretty high on the stupid decisions list no matter what you ended up with.
You must live and learn from that poor piece of decision-making, and focus on making good choices going forward. The best thing for you to do now is to save up for a few players that will get you up the levels until you settle in at around bronze/silver. That can be done on the cheap. Decide what your biggest weaknesses are, and take a long hard look at the card shop for upgrades. Overall rating DOES NOT MATTER. It's all the other ratings that do. When looking at a player, you must take all their abilities into consideration and decide whether or not they would be a better fit for your team than one that you have now. Hitting ability, defensive ability, it's all important. Keep in mind for middle infielders (2B & SS) defense means a lot more than it does at most other positions. At the lower levels, you can punt hitting for better defense. Once you get higher up, you need both. You really only need to know the basics of the ratings and how you want to build your team to be able to find a roster construction that is right for you. Thanks for all your advice, guys. Just out of curiosity is it possible to delete my team and start over?

You can't delete your team, but you do get three teams per license.

You don't have to start over. You played sub-optimally, but you have not damaged your team beyond repair.
1) Do you have a twitch account and linked it to OOTP? See this. 2) Log into the game and under the main menu click "collection missions", then click the drop down "category filter". Click "select none", then click "live series". Start completing these missions, they are cheap and the rewards will give you free packs and cards you can play to reach silver. Chase Utley is particularly good. |

You'd had been better off blowing those 100k points chasing Collection Missions. But early in a team build, focus on incrementally improving all your players, especially positional players, to generate achievement points.

I think the OP is already gone and won't be coming back, since everyone hammered home the point about how stupid buying packs is.

Yeah
He went 44-118 in Iron with a run differential of -400+. He's completed one mission.
At this point of the cycle, he could probably complete all the live missions in a few hours, for about 20K PP's. I doubt that he would have to buy anything higher than a silver card, and most teams probably have at least 26 irons and bronzes. He would end up with, at least, P- Kluber, Righetti, Sheets, Pete Alexander, McNally, Drabek, Benes, Medlen, Halladay, Welch, Ford, Viola, and Fingers. C - Campanella, LaValliere 1B - Goldschmidt 2B - Lajoie, Utley SS - Ripken, Wagner 3B - King Kelly, Longoria LF - Erstad CF - Griffey, Dawson, Dimaggio RF - Kaline, Sierra DH - Edgar Martinez But I suspect that what he wanted was a pity party instead of advice. In his honor
I'm out sick today, so in Edgar Fan's honor I started a new team. Formed the team around 9:20 AM, had to wait until a little after 10 AM for the league to form. But it did allow me to sell my token Gold (Amed Rosario) and buy from the card shop while I was in limbo. The first thing I did was complete the live LAD 20 mission, because the diamond you get for that (Welch) is total garbage. With the rest of my 2K PP's I did 20's for SD, SF, MIA, and NYY.
When the league formed, I submitted my missions, quicksold Welch, and opened my packs, which got me another live gold which I quicksold. (I didn't want to lock any live golds.) And I went after the live 20's with a vengeance. I finished off the NL West and AL East, getting Fingers and Righetti. At this point, it seemed prudent to let the AI set up my team since it was getting to be time for the fist sim. But nothing happened. So I went back to the level 1 missions, still running on the 7K bank which consisted of the 1K with the new team, the 1K, from Rosario, the 4K from Welch, and the 1K from the nameless live (I think it was Treinen). I managed to get the NL East done for Utley and the AL Central for Kaline. I got most of the way through the NL Central, but the time came to update my team before I finished that. So I had the AI set up my team for game 1, which we won and hit on 4 of the 5 400 points for firsts. I finished the level 1's and added Kluber, Wagner, and Edgar to my team for game 2. Then I started on the level 2 live missions. They went a lot quicker, many of the teams didn't need more than 2 or 3 cards to complete. And I got the results from Kluber's first start - a 1 walk, 9 K Maddux AND a no-hitter. I didn't quite finish the level 2's in time for game 4, but was easily done in time for game 5. When I finished, I quicksold all of my live diamonds and golds, and had a bankroll of about 15K. I had the AI set up my team for gam 5 and began looking for layup missions that would yield standard pack(s) for small PP outlays. I continued this through games 3 through 6, during which I sold off King Kelly for more bankroll to start on the Tanana mission which the pack god had kindly provided many of the pieces for. The team lost both games 5 and 6 for some reason. But one of the missions I completed after game 6 gave me 102 Curt Schilling. I can't guarantee that anyone else who tries this would be so lucky, but this was somewhere around the 150th pack I had opened so receiving a perfect by this point was not a big surprise. So I started Schilling in game 7 and damned if he didn't throw another no-hitter. This one was marred by a couple of errors, but he had no walks and 12 K's. Course correcting IS advice. Stop trying to create a problem where there isn't.
