OOTP25 Manager Only
I've played three years as the LA Angels and have exceeded the pre-season Win total by 10+ each year. I usually finish around 72-75 wins a year, this with a $125M player payroll and a net operating profit each year. The GM gets me 4 new SP and 4 new RPs each year, mostly players past their prime and in the 2-2.5 star value. My highest paid SP last year made $1.3M. I get low overall end of year scores and sense I will be fired after a 1-year extension. Any idea why the game doesn't realize I am far-exceeding expectations given the resources available?

I don't think you'll get fired, but the game is pretty harsh on a player that doesn't touch the playoffs even when they are pulling miracles off with budget and roster. You're really playing the hardest version of the game as Manager only as you can't outmaneuver some of the ham-fisted Owner tendencies with smart building decisions in other areas. Not even considering the quality of the GM. If you get fired, or often do, I would definitely find that interesting, though not unlike managers sometimes get done in reality.
Also, you're the Angels, shouldn't you be getting screwed with mediocre talent on long-term deals? |

Thx for the reply. I'm in 2029 now and Trout retired, freeing up $36M. The GM just re-signed Logan O'Hoppe who is making $34M a year, but I don't have any bad contracts now (given to me). Looking at the revenue/expenses info, the owner is raking in serious cash but no talent is coming. A few youngsters are finally emerging from the farm, but none are game-changers. I just think the game would factor in the Win/talent ratio. Even on the finance tab, I had the 9th best efficiency with Cost per Win - 76 wins with a $125M was 9th overall, but I still had a manager score of 300ish, and I was told I should do better.

Thanks jksander; I agree with you that it seems this way - just kind of disappointing with all the stats and logic built into this game. A manager should be evaluated on his management skills, not solely wins and losses.

But...as someone already pointed it out, it is the most challenging way to play the game and I could never go back to being a GM with 2 873 433 house rules to try and make the game more challenging. I just hope they will beef up the mode in the future, but will not be holding my breath as we are in the very vast minority of players that enjoy playing the game this way. |

Thanks; well said. I like manager mode and agree with your assessment of the limitations. Hopefully, there will be improvements to Manager Only mode in the future.

An interactive mode similar to the owner goals but with more back and forth would be great. To be able to ask your GM for an upgrade in defense at SS, as an example. Or for a groundball reliever. The GM wouldn't do it all the time, obviously, but it would give you some influence on their decision. You can't tell me AJ Hinch or Aaron Boone literally has zero say on his roster (Dave Roberts, maybe not!). For now, I typically do manage every game in manager-only mode, but allow myself to manage the top teams with generous owners. I've even played with improving the GM ratings and you end up with a pretty good experience. Not uncommon to end up with an all-righty bullpen or to see the GM do a dumb trade/FA signing here and there, but it's my favorite way to play at the moment. |

I like Manage only mode but don't play it much other than to jump in and act as manager for the odd game.
Two things I've asked to have added to this mode for a few years now. 1. The ability to hire my own coaches. AI Managers have this option, why can't the human manager? 2. The ability to have input on the make up of the active roster. IRL the Manager has influence there, we need this in OOTP. Really irks me when my GM gives me only 1 or 0 lefties in my 8 man BP. ![]() If those features were added, ya, I'd play manage only mode all the time. |
