Pitch Arsenal

Why isn't pitcher's pitch selection more accurate? Especially cards from the pitch tracking era (2007+). Data is readily available.

For example, Paul Skenes' 2024 Baseball Savant page:

1.Fastball 39%
2.Sinker 28%
3.Curveball 11%
4.Sweeper 10%
5.Slider 6%
6.Changeup 5%

His 2024 Live Card:

1.Fastball 94
2.Slider 87
3.Changeup 87

What his 2024 Live Card should be:

1.Fastball 94
2.Sinker 105
3.Curveball 94
4.Slider 80
5.Changeup 87

They don't want him to be better than many historical perfects

There will be a 2024 card for him in 26 eventually, and it will be awesome except for stamina.

There are so many examples. A quick interwebs search reveals that Bob Feller never threw the changeup. He had developed a knuckleball and/or sinker later in his career.

Bob Feller 1940 card:

Fastball 109
Slider 89
Curveball 111
Changeup 76

Jim Bunning credited the slider for his success. Google says he only threw the fastball, curveball, and slider.

Jim Bunning 1964 card:

Fastball 93
Slider 97
Curveball 95
Changeup 84

The answer is this is a fantasy game with a baseball background. It has little to do with actual baseball history or facts. I still struggle with that myself since I started in the Public Beta of PT19. Regular OOTP however is a beautiful baseball game.

But of course

The regular game still has to guess about the pitch arsenals of historical pitches.

True, especially when dealing with the scuffball, seamball, spitball mix that a lot of deadball pitchers used.

Ahh but the regular game is not the almost total fantasy that is our abode over here.

You have to accept the fact that PT player cards are "fictional". Very few of the late season/winter cards released are anywhere near reality, and super-cards are printed based on very short performance peaks to keep the game going into Spring.
