But what a wild ride we had in the second half! The kids done good. Been a lot of years since I had a fall where I was excited every afternoon/evening. And we still have three innings.

That was the best two months of Detroit ball in over a decade!
Go get a big corner bat in the off season and future is bright! Go get those Yankees Cleveland.

The kids stood tall. Next year is only a heartbeat away, and the experience gained will make them better men.

Yes I’m happy with how the season went overall but I’m not going to say I’m not letdown by this series. They had plenty of base runners these last two games that they left stranded. That will sit with me for a while. I do think this team has a bright future but I also wonder if they were two years too early? I’m not sure it matters though because the ball is now in the Harris/Illitch court. The message has been that they will spend when they are good. Now an argument can be made of who are you really spending said money on, as teams have been locking up their best young talent earlier and earlier, but this team has shown they can win. So this will be a very interesting off-season and beginning of next season as the team now will be playing with real expectations.

Disheartening news out of Detroit. Harris is now walking around saying they aren’t interested in signing any free agents to long term contracts. So if you are keeping score at home he said they would spend when:
1. Miggy contract was off the books. 2. When they had found a winning core Well they paid Miggy the last 8 million they owed him this season and the team reached the playoffs with a young core. So I guess my question is what is the next yard marker this team has to cross before they spend? Or just be truthful. Come out and say that we plan to run a low budget draft and develop only model because I’m the smartest guy in the room and the owner knows you will support the product anyway, so why spend? That at least I would make me upset for sure, but I would get over a lot quicker than listening to them make the above spending comments and then tell us how we heard them incorrectly. However, I understand they don’t know who I am and couldn’t care less about my thoughts and feelings. Maybe it’s a smoke screen and they sign Bregman to a five year deal and we can all be excited. I would happily eat crow if that was the case. |

I will withhold my angst for now. This team needs to sign a middle lineup corner inf bat along with few starter reclamation projects at a minimum. If they do something other than that, I need to be sold well on it or I'll be in default Detroit pessimism mode this spring.

Didn't Connie Mack say something like baseball is a business and it's not about winning championships it's about putting bums in the seats. You have to make fans believe you're trying to win so they keep coming back to buy beer and hotdogs.

I mean, there is no rebuttal to this because it is accurate. It just frustrates me to no end that that this team CHOOSES to act like they don’t have money to pour into the product. It’s a city that built this corrupt family 2 stadiums and even when they were losing as much as they were was still coming out to games. Then they saw what happened when they really started winning. The place was packed. Fans support winners. Fans will look past a greedy predatory family if you look like you are trying. It is not a new formula.

Arenado is 33. That’s a short term solution at best.

Do the Tigers need a long term guy at 3B? Hopefully, Jung keep improving. Why do I have visions of the Tigers signing Justin Turner?

I really hope not. Turner doesn’t give you anything defensively. His analytic stats look better than his traditional slash line so I can see why teams may be interested but I just have a hard time seeing him as a guy Harris would want. At 39 he isn’t the reclamation project flip candidate Harris likes to sign. Plus the glove is something you can’t hide. Would you make him a platoon DH with Carpenter? Maybe if they trade or outright release Tork (which would be a shocker to me if they did release a guy under team control) I see a fit. I think they need to get a guy that can both help at the plate and in the field and not have to heavily platoon.

Now the Arenado situation is interesting. You are obviously going to get defensive value with him at 3B. The concern for him would be if the bat continues to slide down. He didn’t have a terrible offensive season last year but he didn’t have an “Arenado” type of year either. I don’t think it’s fair to ask him to repeat his 2022 season where he was one of the best hitters in all of baseball, but it is concerning to see his offensive levels continue to trend down. To get him the Tigers would have to give up prospect capital which I have a feeling Harris is reluctant to do. Arenado is such a name that you could potentially flip him if he gets hot and the Tigers are not. However, if that becomes a reality why dump prospects to begin with? I realize I created a straw man argument here and have no inside info. I just like talking about this stuff.

Alex Cobb for 1 year. If the reclamation ends up with a serviceable back-end starter, good.
They DFA'd Baddoo to make room for Cobb. Hope that he finds his pace somewhere - I love the guy.
