Sheffield demanding more money?

http://www.nypost.com/sports/yankees/43661.htm

I heard a lot about how Sheffield has changed over the years. However, if this article is true (and I leave that as a big if since it is the Post after all), he might not have changed much after all.

No he hasn't. All this year he talked about how much he loved Atlanta and wanted to finish his career there. However, he suddenly changed his mind once he got offered more money. This has been him through his entire career (I'm both a Brewers and Braves fan, so I've had the great "fortune" of seeing him at the beginning and prime of his career).

If George Steinbrenner is at least a one bit smart he'll realize that Sheffield has no where to run.

Demand more money?

Where is he going to play if not New York?

This is probably just a poor rumor anyway.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was true, it's so fitting with his character. You're right about him having no other option, unless the Red Sox suddenly find a bunch of money hidden under their mattresses or something. Atlanta would have loved to have him back but they can't now.

You are asking about Sheffield's character?

You are talking about a guy who admitted to purposely making errors in the field to help force a trade. Of course I’d probably do that and more if it meant getting me out of the city of Milwaukee.

He isn't, he's insane and trying to one up the Red Sox

Why not, SiAS has been known to pay whatever it takes to get what he wants.

Atlanta

Doubtful, read last weeks Sports Weekly to see how Sheff operates contract wise.

Sheff's an ass, SiAS is an ass. May they both rot in the cesspit that is Yankee Stadium together.

From what they are saying on local New York TV Shows (Talk of Our Town) it sounds like this deal is falling apart left and right. The rumors about Sheffield wanting more money are true. From what I've heard he wants an extra 4-5 million dollars. They have also said it has become a game of "chicken" with Sheffield and Steinbrenner.

Steinbrenner can not be one upped by the Sox, so he has to pull off that big free agent acquisition that will get the Yankees back on the front cover of newspapers. Sheffield realizes this, but if he doesn't sign with the Yankees, he really has no other place to go. No one will offer him the type of money the Yankees are.

The other discussion on "Talk of Our Town" is that if a deal fell through with Sheffield, look for the Yankees to at least consider making a run at Vlad. Especially if Boston went out and got A-Rod, Steinbrenner and the Yankees would have to go out and attempt to one up the Sox because Georgy can't be one upped by anyone.

In my opinion the Yankees will get Sheffield. Even if he does want an extra 3 million. What is 3 million dollars to the Yankees, when your payroll will hit 200 million this season.

If I'm the Yankees why not pay extra cash and go after Vlad?

To get that bat - and perhaps to gain leverage on Sheffield - Steinbrenner ordered GM Brian Cashman to call Vladimir Guerrero's agent, Fern Cuza, over the weekend. The Yanks also are going to look into other free-agent right fielders, including Juan Gonzalez, who invoked his no-trade clause in 2000 to cancel a deal to The Bronx.

The Yanks are in a media blackout, and neither Cuza nor Sheffield's business manager, Rufus Williams, returned calls. But it is believed the Yanks offered Guerrero the same deal they were prepared to give Sheffield. Team officials say Cuza is still seeking a deal of at least seven years, and the Orioles are considered the front-runners

To this point, the Yanks have spurned Cuza's request on contract length. But if the Sheffield deal cannot be resurrected and the Red Sox land Alex Rodriguez - and many agents and team officials think the star shortstop eventually will go to Boston - then Steinbrenner could further ratchet up his battle with the Red Sox by bidding more aggressively for Guerrero, the best free agent still available.

Vlad does not want to play for the Yankees. How many times are you going to suggest this?

Yea, the Yanks will never be able to sign Vlad. He has no interest in New York.

Perhaps more reason for Sheffield to go crazy like this?

You are wrong in that statement. Show me something that says he does not want to play for New York.

Well, it was reported last week that the Yanks contacted his agent and were told he had no interest in them. The next day, the Spanks came out and said they had no interest in him. Spin to make them look good? Sounds like it to me.

Show me where it says that? From the last article I've seen he wanted more years then the Yankees were willing to offer.

I heard after the Red Sox move Manny they're going to try and sign Sheffield to stick it to the Yankees.

Haha. Oh man if that happened it would be absolutely priceless. Of course then the Red Sox would have the highest payroll in baseball so everyone would hate them

that would be amazing! Simply amazing!

I still don't think they would have the highest payroll though, after the yanks re-sign petitte there will be no way to catch them in that department.

They won't be hated if they don't win.

Vlad is a shy guy. Playing for the Spanks isn't exactly the ideal situation for him. He doesn't speak english. He feels uncomfortable in the media spotlight. Does New York sound like a good fit for him? Wake up.

This is exactly what everyone is saying about Vlad. But when/where has he himself ever said that he would not be interested in New York.

I'm not saying your statement isn’t correct, because for all I know it probably is. What I am saying though, is that everyone is saying he wouldn’t fit in New York, but when has he ever directly come out and said that?
