Can you imagine Horace Stoneham talking with Tom Yawkey?
T: You're going to ruin the game bringing in The Darkies. And I don't mean Alvin. H: I'm going to improve the game and make money. T: You're going to drive away the white fans with all those Negro players. H: There won't be "all those Negro players". Just a few stars. T: MLB is a legal monopoly. You don't have to do this. H: Yes it is and we're not taking advantage of our legal status. We're only monopolizing white players and fans. The Negro leagues are competition. T: Negroes won't come to our games. H: Sure they will. We sign Negro stars and it will put the Negro leagues out of business. We can do that because we're a monopoly. T: You're ruining baseball. H: I'll win a pennant before you do!

Pirates Play Moneyball 1951 to 2008 46,000 views and counting!... Wow, up to 47,000, thank you. Wow, I hadn't checked for weeks. Oct 9 2024 its 79,561. Why do people use different players, different lineups, different strategy, development, talent change randomness, and the development lab, but judge the game on whether it produces historical statistics? |

You both could have bitten your tongues and not responded, and stuck to the thread topic, but no. The almost pathological desire the two of you have to score political points just wouldn't let you. Anyway, regarding the thread subject, I'll shill for my own post #69 as it contains data showing the numbers of wins associated with various scenarios. The third wild card has so far recorded a median of 87 wins, the lowest of the set. The lowest absolute total is 82 wins belonging to the 1973 NL East and the 2005 NL West winners. The fewest wins for the first wild card is 87, with this being 84 for the second and third wild cards. |
