Does anyone else create storylines in their head as they play?
When I was a kid, I used to write stories about my teams in games I played. Probably because I thought I wanted to be a journalist. Now, 30 years later, I have a hard time not playing and creating storylines in my head.
Like, how would I explain this to the media? How do I justify this move? What is my reasoning to the fans for doing this? Am I just weird or does anyone else do this? lol

Not at all, I will, albeit not often, add my own personal touch to the storylines in my league...adds to the whole immersion factor of playing...take a look at the dynasty forum to see how not alone, you are...

I usually play historical with a really restrictive ruleset (generally no trading) so I do have some fiction explaining that.

Absolutely. After a particularly tough game, I will edit the summary with some choice quotes from Manager Jack O'Lantern [me] about his team. Then I'll go off on a walkabout or run, thinking how I would answer questions from the news media about my lousy team. Since I invariably take on weaker teams, it can be an exercise in masochism.
My favorite kind of storyline is the talented guy who somehow never got a fair shake in the majors. It happened a lot in the Fifties, with black players who were not Jackie Robinson or Satchel Paige. But there have always been a few guys, who have solid ratings and good potential in OOTP as rookies, but never got a chance IRL. That's why I play with recalc (which would obliterate those guys) off, development on, high TCR. Those guys have a fighting chance, and it makes a great alternative storyline.

Not story lines, but I enjoy calling the play as if I were the broadcast announcer. I'll try and use baseball terms too, like "that was a can of corn" or "he hit that one on a rope to centre".
It's fun being a pretend radio announcer in my pretend baseball world

Not only while I'm playing OOTP, but while taking a walk, when I can't sleep at night, while waiting in traffic...

I do the same things with my fictional baseball world as well! That's why I don't play as a GM/manager, I rather watch everything happen in the leagues I made like I'm a commissioner, fan or reporter. I have commissioner mode on so I can make any changes I want, and I also make players (or edit the players' names in the draft pool) so I can follow their careers.

Is there anybody who does NOT do this? Isn't that the whole point of games like this? What else are people doing, if not coming up with storylines as the sim unfolds?
Maybe I fail to understand the question but the answer seems like "obviously yes". |

All the time. I'm glad to see I am not the only one. I started playing SOM when I was 10. I am 61 now.

I would turn the sound off and do the PBP... I would also create a weird noise that my relatives wondered about. It was the crowd cheering. Yeah, buddy... EC wanted to be a sportscaster like Gordon McLendon, Lindsey Nelson, Bill Stern, Mel Allen and Old Diz... never made it, but I did become a DJ for 32 years. Yep, EC is a sicko... On the OOTP Dynasty Forum I've been covering my mythical Islandian Pro Alliance for over 20 years... Actually it is no longer a work of love... I have mixed emotions about the IPA... It is now a mixture of love and lots of work. I still have 15 seasons to go to reach the 100-season mark. That's my goal. EC is still a DJ at heart... I'm back on the air after 21 years of retirement on a small Southern Gospel station (Sound Radio). You can hear it Sunday afternoon on the internet from 1 pm to 3 pm Central time. Yeah, buddy, this is shameful self-promotion. I need listeners real bad. "Mixed Emotions".... defined as "the feeling you get when you see your 267-and-one-half-pound mean mother-in-law drive over a high cliff in your brand-spanking new Lincoln Continental". Yep, that's the kind of corny stuff I used... and yep, it worked pretty darn good. Here is the link: https://soundradio.live/# EC welcomes and would appreciate your critical review. I know what professional radio broadcasters think about my program, but it would be nice to know what "down-to-earth folks and average people think". Uh Oh! All of you lovable and sometimes irascible OOTP folks are all above average! Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-07-2024 at 10:52 AM. |
