Why have the forums load-time slowed down?
The last couple weeks(?) I've noticed that although the various posts in the forum tend to be quick loading, the attachments seems to take about 5 seconds to load when they use to be almost immediate.
Server issues or is it just me?

Unlike a manual, forums aren't something that can be expected to be provided by a game company.
Anyway, some possibilities for the problem areIf you have a physical connection to your modem your cat has frayed the cable. If you're on WiFi, half the neighborhood is using your signal And, in the tradition of standard OOTP answers, the third possibility is you won't get the results you want unless retire according to history is set to yes.

I get the impression that the company that owns OOTP doesn't give **** all about this forum or how outdated and slow it is.

Aren't message boards kind of a done deal? From what I can tell young people prefer the system where the enter key sends the message rather than makes a paragraph.

It’s only this forum that is slow. It seems to happen 3 or 4 times each year. I think it has something to do with their server.

But on second thought, we do have it... eventually... something is better than nothing... thank goodness we still have an OOTP website. EC is old curmudgeon, not too impressed with the younger generations. But on second thought, I have to give the current generation much credit. They are much more tolerant of others that look different from them, that live a life and lifestyle different from them. They are far more tolerant than my 1950s generation is... far more tolerant to people that travel to the beat of a different drum. I have learned this from the current generation. Thank you, young folks. Here is what most of us think about the youth of today. "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers". Written by Socrates 400 B.C. To stay on topic, I too, would like the website to function better. I have no trouble on other website, just this one. So I think it is OOTP's problem to fix.
Having stayed on topic, I now digress a little bit as I often do. I learned a lot this morning on this website, so I will share it with all of you. When looked up this Socrates' quote this morning, I also found other quotes by Socrates and was enlightened. 10 Quotes from Socrates: Be as you wish to seem Beware the barreness of a busy life. The greatest way to live with honor in this world is to be what we pretend to be. True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing. The unexamined life is not worth living. I know that I am intelligent, because that I know nothing. To know, is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge. By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing. I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing and that is I know nothing. I will now gracefully close this topic digression -- so I don't get a warning -- with the wisest words ever spoken by the wisest man that ever lived - Solomon. "Respect for God is the beginning of wisdom". 'nuff said. EC Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-04-2024 at 11:51 AM. |

I agree with Socrates, but I disagree with Solomon. People give too much credit to their gods for their own achievements and enlightenment. Everything you learn and all wisdom you gain is because of your own desire, based on your personal decisions in your existence. I have no respect for any gods because, if they existed, they would have to earn it, just like any other person.
Oh, and the habitual ****ty performance of this forum is just another reason I doubt I will ever buy anything past OOTP 25. It's become as much of a self parody of itself as the Rolling Stones have. Last edited by Baby Ruth; 09-04-2024 at 11:55 AM. |

Matt Arnold, Lukas Berger, Andreus Raht and T. C. Dale are my favorite OOTP people. Over the years, they always help me when I need help. Thanks, Matt. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-04-2024 at 12:18 PM. |

There isn't anything wrong with the communications formats that have a low character limit and use the enter key to send. The problem is not adapting to formats that allow more characters by using paragraphs.
Eugene is right about the tolerance of younger people. And for those who criticize young people, can you imagine how silly the people who think they can turn the calendar back to 1955 must look to them? |

I'm not in favor of turning the clock back to any time. I just wish they would learn how to speak and write in language that makes them look like they at least finished grade school, regardless of medium. Ending every sentence with 'LOL' just makes them look stupid and...common.

I'll put up with some LOLs in exchange for their understanding of acceptance and fairness.

She came from Greece She had a thirst for knowledge She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College That's where I caught her eye She told me that her dad was loaded I said, "In that case I'll have rum and Coca-Cola" She said, "Fine" And then in 30 seconds time, she said ?I want to live like common people I want to do whatever common people do I want to sleep with common people I want to sleep with common people like you? Well what else could I do? I said, "I'll, I'll see what I can do" I took her to a supermarket I don't know why But I had to start it somewhere So it started there I said, "Pretend you've got no money" But she just laughed and said, "Oh, you're so funny" I said, "Yeah, well I don't see anyone else smilin' in here Are you sure? You wanna live like common people You wanna see whatever common people see Wanna sleep with common people You wanna sleep with common people like me?" But she didn't understand And she just smiled and held my hand Rent a flat above a shop Cut your hair and get a job Smoke some [ANTIQUATED TERM FOR CIGARRETTES] and play some pool Pretend you never went to school But still you'll never get it right 'Cause when you're laid in bed at night Watching roaches climb the wall If you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah You'll never live like common people You'll never do whatever common people do You'll never fail like common people You'll never watch your life slide out of view And then dance and drink and screw Because there's nothing else to do Sing along with the common people Sing along and it might just get you through Laugh along with the common people Laugh along even though they're laughin' at you And the stupid things that you do Because you think that poor is cool Like a dog lyin' in a corner They will bite and never warn you, look out They'll tear your insides out 'Cause everybody hates a tourist Especially one who thinks It's all such a laugh Yeah, and the chip stain's grease Will come out in the bath You will never understand How it feels to live your life With no meaning or control And with nowhere else to go You are amazed that they exist And they burn so bright While you can only wonder why Rent a flat above a shop Cut your hair and get a job Smoke some [ANTIQUATED TERM FOR CIGARRETTES] and play some pool Pretend you never went to school But still you'll never get it right 'Cause when you're laid in bed at night Watchin' roaches climb the wall If you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah You'll never live like common people You'll never do what common people do You'll never fail like common people You'll never watch your life slide out of view And dance and drink and screw Because there's nothin' else to do I wanna live with common people like you I wanna live with common people like you I wanna live with common people like you
