Late 1970s Kansas City Royals
I started a historical sim to do the late 1970s Kansas City Royals and have posted it to YouTube under 2manyHobbies at
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...fvozRK5dloeIYx You can watch, but for a synopsis so far. 1976 Started slow and had to play catchup to a hot Minnesota Twins. By August 25th I had finally caught them and we were tied for first in the AL West. Then the wheels came off and I could not buy a win and finished 5th. I have played out 1977, but haven't posted it to YouTube yet. When I do i will update this post. |

1977
Started 3 rookies. Clint Hurdle at 1B, UL Washington at 2B, and Willie Wilson at CF. All three would get votes for AL rookie of the year and Clint Hurdle would win AL Rookie of the year. Had a tight race with with the Rangers and A's until the end of August when the A's fell off then the Rangers fell away and we had a 92 win season and Al West title. We would face the Baltimore Orioles in the best of 5 ALCS. |

For the 1978 season the Royals made it back to the ALCS leading the AL West the entire way.
However, a few weeks before end of the season the Royals were hit with injuries. They lost their starting 2B, starting RF, and back up catcher for the rest of the year. The reward for winning their 2nd straight AL West title was a rematch against the 100+ win Baltimore Orioles. 1978 ALCS Game #1 in Baltimore Orioles win 4-1 in easy victory. Game #2 in Baltimore Orioles score 2 in bottom of 6th to win 2-1 in close pitching dual. At this point I figure the series is over. Game #3 in Kansas City KC pitcher Dennis Leonard goes 9 IP giving up 5 hits as Royals win 3-0. Game 4 in Kansas City. Orioles lead series 2 games to 1. Bottom of the 8th Orioles leading the game 2-1. Back up SS Budy Harrelson, who had lost his SS job to Bucky Dent at the All-Star Break, comes in to pinch hit with 2 outs and the bases loaded. He has a .225 Avg for the season and faces John Miller who has a career 2.62 ERA and has a .182 opponent batting Avg when the bases are loaded. Harrleson with the count 1-1 Harrleson hits a single by the 2B and Bucky Dent is able to get from 2B and beat the throw home to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. The Orioles would get a man on first with 2 outs, but the Royals would close it out to force a game 5. Game 5 in Baltimore. Series Tied. Royals Ace Rick Reuschel, 15-10, 2.81 ERA vs Oriole Ace Mike Flanagan, 17-11, 3.59 ERA. The Royals would get a run in the top of the 1st and the Orioles would get a run in the bottom of the 4th and another in the bottom of the 7th to lead 2-1. Top of the 8th 2B Tim Flannery, a 20 year old rookie drafted in 1977, is the leadoff batter. He is only playing because the regular 2B, UL Washington, has been out the last couple of weeks with an injury. But he has had a good series, batting 8th and going for .471. He hits a long fly off the wall in RF for a triple. C Jamie Quirk then comes up with a single to tie the game. Quirk gets to 2B and with 2 outs George Brett comes up to bat. Brett is about to be benched, if there was anyone to take is place. He is doing good defensively but this bat is dead. .062 for the series. Brett hits a long single that finds that gap between LF-CF for a triple and the Royals, dead and down 2 games to 0 have taken a 3-2 lead in game 5 to the bottom of the 9th. Bottom of the 9th, #8 hitter, DH Lee May singles and the Orioles PH to move him to 2B with 1 out. J. Cruz grounds out moving May to 3B. The Royal are 1 outs from the series and a showdown with the St. Louis Cardinals and LF Enos Cabell is up to bat. On a 1-1 count Enos singles an the game goes to Extra Innings. The 10th goes by scoreless and in the top of the 11th Royals 1B Clint Hurdle leads off with a 394ft HR. The Royals are up 4-3 and again 3 outs away and facing the Oriole bottom of the lineup. Leadoff hitter Lee May hits a standup double. 2B Wilfong grounds out to move him to third. Jose Cruz is given and IBB to get better matchup for P Al Habrosky. Enos Cabel then hits a bloop single to score May from third. Cruz, very fast and using the hit and run, makes his way to third. CF Willie Wilson throws to third and short-hops it and Brett can't handle it as the ball goes by him. Cruz runs home Orioles win 5-4. Willie Wilson was given an error. |
