Visiting the Mound, Performance Bump?
I like to think when I visit the mound and give a pep talk to the pitcher there is sometimes a performance bump for the pitcher. I’m not sure that is in the game engine, but often - not always, it seems to help with getting out of a jam or minimizing damage. What do others think - or know?

I believe there is a slight bump to calming your pitcher down when you do a mound visit but I am sure quite a few people on here know better than me. The one question I have is whether AI coaches do mound visits because if there is a benefit and only we use it then we're getting an unfair advantage albeit a fairly minor one.

It's flavor. I can't believe the devs would hand the human player an advantage like this. Course, they've surprised me before...

Here's my not-so-definitive study:
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=331046 In short: seems to help lower OBP but that's about it.

I always wondered about the effect on performance. I mostly use the mound visit to buy time for relievers to warm up. The added time can help them get from "Warming Up" to "Ready", though not all at once. So it helps rescue me, when I have failed to get the bullpen ready.
A further mystery is whether the quotes from the pitcher have any bearing on their performance. Once in awhile, a guy will admit "I'm gassed", even though he is not showing up as tired. If he says "maybe one more batter" and I have a RP ready, he's going in pronto. I like the bravado of "let me pitch", but those guys sometimes get torched. But maybe these quotes are randomly generated and unrelated to performance? I guess it's a house rule, but I try to use the mound visits as I would IRL. The game imposes by default the modern rule of one mound visit per inning (by graying out the option after one visit), so I choose carefully. IRL the manager may be trying to set the defense with the infielders, or discuss how to play a pinch-hitter, or calm everybody down. In these cases the pitcher is irrelevant to the visit, but admittedly it's hard for OOTP to reproduce mound visits with those purposes.

I never visit the mound so I have no experience with this. But I wouldn't believe them. You have the fatigue meter which by all appearances correctly reports the results of the interaction between the stamina rating and pitch count. So the talk looks like flavor to me. |

Regarding the quotes from the pitcher, even if they weren't randomly generated they really still shouldn't be trusted anyway.
When the pitcher gives the pitching coach that gritty and heroic answer, "Don't take me out. I still got more fight left in me, I'm gonna strike this next hitter out, coach!" Yeah, that sounds real great for a Disney movie --- but the reality is, that hitter could hit the very next pitch 450 feet. Now if a guy tells you that he's cooked IRL, yeah it's time to pull him haha. But those, "I still feel good" answers are meaningless IRL and should be meaningless in OOTP. |
