New player to OOTP 25, but long-time fan of OOTP 21. I am playing a historical game as my own franchise, and have a question regarding purchasing players from minor league teams.
On 13 Aug 1937 in my game I noticed that Pee Wee Reese and Vern Stephens had been purchased by other clubs from their minor leave team (Louisville Colonels) that same day. However, when I go back one day to 12 August, neither payer was on the roster of the Louisville Colonels. Not sure how the two players suddenly emerged on 13 August, and were scooped by other teams instantly, giving me no shot at them. Didn't notice this on OOTP 21. Has something changed? I am doing something wrong in my settings? Thanks in advance. |

To troubleshoot this, I would first go to the Louisville Colonels page and check transactions, to see if those two guys were signed/acquired on August 13. There should be a "paper trail" for how they got there.
My guess was that these guys happened to debut in the minor leagues at that time. But Baseball Reference says Reese started with Louisville in 1938; not 1937. And Stephens started in 1938 with Johnstown and Springfield. According to his SABR bio, Stephens graduated from high school (Long Beach H.S.) in 1937 (at 16!) and attended Long Beach Junior College, before signing with the Browns. Pee Wee Reese turned 19 in 1937. His bio does say that he was signed by Louisville that year; but he did not play until the next season. Louisville was an unaffiliated team, until the Boston Red Sox purchased it, later in 1938, purportedly to acquire Reese. If you are playing with the setting to allow players to debut in the minor leagues according to history, Reese and Stephens should not show up until 1938 (unless Reese signing in 1937 counts as a debut). The other thing I would do is to check if either Reese or Stephens have any OOTP stats from before August 13, 1937. If not, that would confirm the debut dates. I can only hazard a guess that the game is using 1937 as the year they signed contracts (after the season, IRL), and August is safely after their amateur seasons were over. If you play as Commissioner, you could place them back on Louisville, and engage in a contract negotiation with other teams for their services. How are their potential ratings?

thanks for your insightful response. The league's draft pool also was announced on 13 Aug, which probably triggered the addition of several players as free agents. Specifically Reese, Stephens, Ellis Kinder and Earl Harrist to several unaffiliated minor league teams (e.g, Johnstown for Stephens, Louisville for Reese, Jackson for Kinder). All signed with the unaffiliated team on the 13th, and immediately were sold to affiliated teams on the same date. As such, I had no ability to negotiate for their services, as the moves happened instantaneously. Odd glitch in the game.
So, I am playing in commissioner mode, but rarely use the commissioner powers (to maintain realism), so am not great at leveraging the commoner powers. Any suggestion on how I can use "commissioner mode" to remedy the situation and negotiate for the players' services? May need remedial instructions! Thanks in advance! |

My best guess is to edit the players' bio section to assign them to a minor league team. (You need to choose league and then team, on the screen that starts with name, nickname, home town. Just scroll down a bit and there should be a blank league and team with drop-down at the very bottom. Screen shot attached.) It would make sense to choose an unaffiliated minor league team, so they aren't part of an organization.
Then I would, as GM of your MLB team, make an offer to purchase each player's contract. Given that the AI was obviously "aware" of them, your offer should start a bidding war, or at least competition for their services. (Obviously, you can't go too high, or you will discourage the AI from participating.) Once there are multiple offers, the AI should generate messages along the lines of: "I'd like to sign with your club, but Pittsburgh has made a better offer. Unless you can match their $7500 bonus, I'm going to be a Pirate," (Note that sometimes the AI seems to lie about the competing offer, in my experience. As IRL.). Actually, here you would be dealing with the unaffiliated minor league club, which has presumably signed the rookies and has them under contract, but you get the idea. The goal should be to start a competitive bidding process, so that you are not "cheesing" the game by giving yourself an advantage over the AI GM's. If you are more aggressive because you are aware these are IRL stars, so be it. Of course, if you play with player development on, no annual recalculation of stats, and high TCR, they may disappoint you! Note that there is a checkbox in league settings that would set a standard price for purchase of players from unaffiliated minor leagues. This, if checked, would override this competition (I think). So, you will need to uncheck it. I'll attach a screenshot, with the box unchecked. Note that you have to be within the minor league screen in settings to get the purchase fee choice. I hope this works. Timing could be problematic. You will need to get your offers in before the AI assigns them to other teams. Good luck!
