The big move of course was the Falcons, fresh off of signing Kirk Cousins to a massive contract, going out and drafting WASHINGTON GOAT Marcus Penix at 8. This had been roundly panned but…

a. I think Penix might actually be in the best situation of any of the first 6 guys going in,

b. I think that if the assessments of the guys I read are right - Rob Staton of seahawksdraftblog especially - Drake Maye in particular is a 3rd round talent overdrafted into 3rd overall, which is a bust situation waiting to happen,

c. For all the talk of the huge Cousins deal, it’s essentially a 2 year guaranteed deal with options. If Penix beats Cousins out next year, the Falcons can wash their hands of that deal swiftly and easily.

Honestly I think Maye, McCarthy, and Nix all have higher chances to become busts than Penix does. It’s still a weird move - another parallel is Jordan Love but the selling point of Nix is that he should be an NFL ready guy, not a project at all (plus he’s basically 24 already) - but if I’m being honest, not half as weird as nobody drafting defenders until pick 15 and allowing Seattle to take the best defender in the draft at 16 (Latu could turn out better of course but he also has an injury history).
I think teams focus more on winning than they do the actual QBs talents. Isn't it easier to look better as the QB of LSU, Alabama, and Georgia than it does North Carolina? Especially when you're throwing to great WRs that are getting wide open?

Daniels is going to a better situation than Drake Maye. Drake is going to one of the worst situations. Just like the Panthers QB. Can I say he's a bust? No. I agree Penix is going to a good situation, but I don't think it's as good as the Bears. That's set up perfectly. And say what you want about Tepper, but he's building a great team out there in Chicago.

We all agree Mitch Trubisky was a bust.

Mitch is 5th all time in Chicago's 100+ seasons in passing yds & TD's. And among their top 25 in those categories, he is 1st in completion % & 1st in INT % & passer rating.

It is going to take a lot for anyone to convince me the Chicago QB situation is in a good place.

Like father, like daughter. Didn't know if I should put this in the NFL or NHL thread.

I don't think that was a bad thing. Kids will mimic their parents.

Even as a Cowboys fan, Darrell Green is the only Redskin I ever liked.

One of the best compliments I ever got, even though it wasn't meant as a compliment, was when someone told me, Darrell Green would catch you.

HOF Niner CB Jimmy Johnson dies @ 86.

I heard of Jimmy Johnson. I knew of Rafer Johnson. But I never knew they were brothers.

Can you imagine having a gold medalist in the decathalon & an NFL HOF all decade player growing up in the same household? I bet those pickup basketball games were tense.

Guess I'm done with the NFL, too. (I already gave baseball the boot.)

I missed this, two months ago. Kickoffs will be some XFL-refugee joke.

I wondered why this, particularly, was a deal-breaker. I don't mind kickoffs moving up, moving back, goal posts on the goal line, goal posts in the endzone, halo rules for punt returners, or even the tucking **** Rule, as glad as I was to see it justly removed. Things like that tweak aspects of the game, without rendering it unrecognizable. I can watch a 1982 game and a 2022 game, and they pretty much look and flow the same, regardless of what penalties the refs are calling.

This is like the "ghost runner" replacing extra innings in baseball. Some clever abortion shoved into the game and making it look alien. Nerp. Nerp. Nerp x 1000. Byeee!

(Yes, I watched two MLB seasons [2021, 2022] and a few games this year before Manfred ruined everything else. But I've never seen a "ghost runner", and I never will. The Mets could be in Game 7 of the World Series and if they didn't win it in nine, I'd turn it off.)

Ah, well, more time for hoops and pucks, and even soccerball. Congrats, Roger Goodell! Rob Manfred has nothing on the old pro! Did Manly Manfred ever burn tapes to cover up cheating? I think not!

(Thank goodness the Super Bowl ads all turn up on YouTube, anyhow.)

Apparently that's not the only thing you missed.

Why does this new kickoff rule bother you? They already ruined the kickoff. Nothing they do now can make it worse. I would bail on the NFL the second they go to college style OT.

They tweaked the kickoff (several times), but it still had a recognizable form. This looks like a dance-off or something. (Not to mention that it completely eliminates the on-side kick possibility.)

And LMAO at the "guardian caps"! What QB will be able to see over/throw over those ramparts, now? Minimum QB height is now 6'9", is that it?

Where have you gone, Dan McGwire?
A nation turns its Pygmy eyes to you, woo-woo-woo…

I'm assuming the onside kick uses the more traditional formation. They only say when you can onside kick. In the 4th, and only if you're losing. You have to declare that you're kicking it that way.

So…one of the great SURPRISE tactics must now be announced in advance?

Gosh, can't wait until Rog decides that you can only blitz one man from each side, and you have to announce it in advance. And no pump-fakes, dammit!

(Not that I'm actually waiting, as I'm gone, but you get the point.)

You know, using a hard count to get the defense to jump off-sides just creates unnecessary collisions. Better get on that one, too, Rog.

You can only sack the QB twice a half, but you can chase him around all you want.

When the NFL first announced that they were going to have two games on a Wednesday (Christmas Day), I was wondering how they were going to make that work within the constructs of the weekly schedules since it's right in the middle of the week. What they did make sense, though, as the four teams that are playing in Christmas Day are also the four teams playing four days earlier on a Saturday, just with the matchups juggled. So it'll be the same rest that a team would get if they played on Sunday and then had to play on Thursday... So:

Sat 12/21:
Hou @ KC
Pitt @ Balt

Wed 12/25:
KC @ Pitt
Balt @ Hou

The schedule (days & times) isn't set for the final weekend, but those four teams could have a significant (11 days - probably unprecedented?) rest advantage - in what could very well be games with playoff implications - against their final-game opponents:

Clev @ Balt
KC @ Denv
Cinc @ Pitt
Hou @ Tenn

Not sure about all the fuss about Tua Tagovailoa "deserving" a contract extention. He has been above average the last year or two, but he is injury prone and he was below average his first two years in the league. Also the Dolphins have only played two playoff games in his four years. He is pretty much the definition of a mediocre quaterback. If I were the Dolphins I would wait and see what happens this year.
