Replay--Baseball from 1901 to 2024
Here is my second attempt in OOTP 25 with replaying baseball history. First, some ground rules:
No real-life transactions and lineups (which are traditional). Box scores will be on. There will be 3 weeks of spring training. AI settings are 45/27/18/9. Trading difficulty will be at medium. Trading preference will be balanced. There is a 3-year recalculation with the OOTP development engine on. The player development lab is off, though. Will be in commissioner mode, and not manage any team during the recap (wouldn't want a bias now, would we?). Expansions and moving of teams will be as normal. There is a rookie draft--and it will be a random draft, meaning that any team could have the #1 pick. Also, there will be draft pick trading, too. Missed seasons (such as for World War I and II) will not be applied. Retirements will be according to history. Most other settings are default. Induction threshold for the Hall of Fame is 66% There is an All-Star Game, and the winning league has World Series home field advantage. (SP is starting pitcher, RHP is right-handed pitcher, LHP is left-handed pitcher, C is catcher, RP is relief pitcher, 1B is first baseman, 2B is second baseman, 3B is third baseman, SSP is shortstop, LF is left fielder, CF is center fielder, and RF is right fielder). 1901 World Series results
1901 World Series: Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Game 1, October 12th, 1901, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh Road Win Lifts Detroit to 1-0 Lead in WS When the games really matter, the Detroit Tigers put on their best show, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 8-6. Kid Elberfeld went 4-5 with 4 singles, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. Detroit now leads Pittsburgh 1-0 in the best-of-7 affair. The game was all tied up in the top of the tenth, until Elberfeld delivered big-time for Detroit, stroking a dramatic 2-run single off Deacon Phillippe. The game-changing hit put the Tigers on top, 8-6. "There's no quit in this team," said Tigers manager George Stallings. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Tigers lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 13th, 1901, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh Raucous Exposition Park Crowd Propels Pirates to 2-0 Victory; Series Tied at 1 The Pittsburgh Pirates got a complete game effort from starter Rube Waddell to move into a 1-1 tie with the Detroit Tigers in the best-of-7 World Series. The Pittsburgh left-hander went the distance at Exposition Park, cooling off the Detroit Tigers and striking out 9 to help Pittsburgh take the 2-0 win that knotted the series. Waddell tossed 121 pitches over 9 innings to clinch the win for the Pirates. The left-hander allowed just 3 hits, while racking up 9 strikeouts in the game. "I was just taking it batter by batter, just enjoying the moment," said Waddell. Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at Bennett Park in Detroit. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 15th, 1901, Bennett Park, Detroit Road Win Lifts Pittsburgh to 2-1 Lead in WS With starter Jesse Tannehill leading the charge, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Detroit Tigers, 7-4, in Game 3 of the World Series. The left-hander threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball at Bennett Park to help Pittsburgh take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. With one out in the top of the fourth, Ginger Beaumont put Pittsburgh in front, 3-2, with a run-scoring single. The Pirates went on to win the ballgame. "It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Beaumont said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Bennett Park in Detroit. Pirates lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 16th, 1901, Bennett Park, Detroit Almost There: Pittsburgh On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 10-2 Win Riding the 4-hit performance of center fielder Ginger Beaumont, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a road win against the Detroit Tigers, 10-2, in Game 4 of the World Series. Beaumont was 4 for 6 with 4 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 1. Pittsburgh used the clutch hitting of Honus Wagner to capture the win. The shortstop drilled a bases-clearing double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Pirates the lead, 7-2. For the game, Wagner had 1 single and 1 double in 4 at-bats. "I expect to carry this team on my shoulders at times," said Wagner. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Bennett Park in Detroit. Pirates lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 17th, 1901, Bennett Park, Detroit Pittsburgh Pirates Take World Series It was all about winning for the Pittsburgh Pirates -- and win they did. There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball. "We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said starting pitcher Rube Waddell, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions." Pittsburgh defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 8-1 at Bennett Park to take the series 4-1. "Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played." Pirates win series 4-1 World Series MVP: SP Rube Waddell (Pittsburgh Pirates) |

1902 World Series results
1902 World Series: Boston Americans vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Results Game 1, October 11th, 1902, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh World Series Game 1 Victory for Phillippe and Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Pirates started the World Series in style, downing the visiting Boston Americans at Exposition Park by a score of 8-1 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pirates right-hander Deacon Phillippe threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The Americans had trouble solving Phillippe, who surrendered 1 run on 4 hits over 9 innings. "There was a kid in the stands with a sign that said 'Pittsburgh Pirates (probably) 1902 World Series Champions'," Phillippe told reporters after the game. "I told him, 'Premature, but I like the confidence.'" The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead 1-0 Game 2, October 12th, 1902, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh Boston Win Evens Series at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Bob Ewing, the Boston Americans topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 6-0 and got their first win in the 1902 World Series. Ewing threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball for the Americans. The win moves Boston into a 1-1 tie with Pittsburgh. Ewing, a native of The United States, was dealing all game. He kept Pittsburgh hitters off-balance, while giving the Americans 9 quality innings. Ewing threw 139 pitches, allowing 5 hits and striking out 5. "At least it was over quickly," Pirates manager Fred Clarke said. "We'll just have to try our luck again." The next game is set to be played on October 14th, 1902 at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 14th, 1902, Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston Americans Rally Past Pirates for 2-1 Series Lead When the games really matter, the Boston Americans put on their best show, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 1-0. Jesse Tannehill threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Boston now leads Pittsburgh 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair. Boston got a knockout punch from Buck Freeman. The first baseman hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome. "We lost," Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston. Americans lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 15th, 1902, Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston Pirates Clip Americans, 6-5, in WS Contest In a crucial game, the Pittsburgh Pirates put on their best show, beating the Boston Americans by a final score of 6-5. Buck Freeman was 4 for 4 with a double and 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Pittsburgh and Boston are now tied at 2 wins apiece in the best-of-7 affair. One of the clutch hits for Pittsburgh came from one of their biggest talents. In the top of the seventh with two out, Honus Wagner, who led the NL in slugging percentage with .573 in 1900, hit a run-scoring single to put the Pirates up, 6-5. For the game, the shortstop was 3 for 4 with 3 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Pirates manager Fred Clarke said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston. Series tied 2-2 Game 5, October 16th, 1902, Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston Critical Game 5 Goes to Host Americans, 5-0 In a pivotal Game 5, the Boston Americans were hoping for a big game from starter Bob Ewing. They got one. The right-hander shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates, proving to be the difference-maker as he led his club to a 5-0 victory. The Americans took the 5-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series. In his 130-pitch effort, Ewing allowed no runs on 5 hits over 9 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 4. Pirates manager Fred Clarke did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." Game 6 is scheduled for Saturday at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Americans lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 18th, 1902, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh Boston Americans Take World Series The Boston Americans are champions, today and forever. The Americans topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 at Exposition Park today to claim the World Series crown. "Nobody can take this away from us, not ever," said series MVP and starting pitcher Bob Ewing after his club had sealed the victory. "We worked hard and we accomplished our goal." The atmosphere was electric as the newly-crowned champs stormed the field at the conclusion of the game. Fans cheered, gloves flew in the air, high fives and hugs were the order of the day. "From day one of spring training, I could see it in their eyes," said Boston manager Jimmy Collins. "The players had that look of intensity, of hunger, of a desire to accomplish something great, and today they did that. They're champions of the world." The Americans took the series 4-2. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 96-44 record. Boston Americans win series 4-2 World Series MVP: SP Bob Ewing (Boston Americans) |
