MLB The Show, Madden, etc
Apologize if this belongs in another forum, couldn't think where to put it other than sports.
Going to get a gaming console, PS5 I'm thinking but would like to hear from some who have console and what they would recommend. Also, I see PS5 and PS5 Digital. Which is the better option for someone who isn't necessarily interested in head to head online play, just more for solo play? Or is XBox a better choice? Tks for any/all feedback, much appreciated. |

I have a ps5, lucked into it during the "hard to find" times.
Top sports title is The Show, IMHO. Get some user settings off of Operation Sports and then have the game set your sliders and advance your skill level as you play (feature is called dynamic something or other, don't recall exact name). It doesn't take long to have a solid base by playing out some spring training games. You can turn off this feature independently for pitching and hitting, so if you feel like pitching is locked in turn it off and leave hitting on. This dynamic feature means not playing "slider tag" allowing you to get into the game very quickly. Graphically it is stunning. Got my ps5 in 2022 and bought my only copy of Madden. I like it but don't love it. At the end of the day it's still Madden. I think if you like/enjoy Madden you'll have fun with the game. My issue is I only have so much time to play games and I prefer others to Madden. However, EA is releasing a new NCAA College Football game this year with licensed players and I intend to give that a go. NBA 2k is also stunning to look at. I think my twitch quickness and not having or wanting to take the time to master the controller to make on court moves leaves it pretty much unplayed. I think I have 2023? In it is historical play so when I do play I play with the Kareem/Magic Lakers which can be fun. None of the sports titles wow me with the front office in their franchise modes. They may have some in depth stats but they waste so much space on the HD/wide screens that you have to scroll to see anything more than the basics. Being an OOTP, FOF player has spoiled me so no surprise here. I don't play online, or head to head, so while front office stuff isn't great IMHO, playing out games on the console sports can sure scratch the itch of wanting to be there in the moment and play out a game. I think the only difference between digital and the "full" ps5 is the digital doesn't have a disc drive. Mine has the drive as it was the only option when I bought. It puts out a great picture when playing UHD/Blu Ray movies. It allows you to buy games on disc. So comes down to what you want/need. Adding an extra solid state drive is very easy and with those getting cheaper and cheaper something you'll want to do. I added a 1 TB to mine and have plenty of space, but I don't play a lot of games. Prices have fallen enough that if I did it today I could get a 2 tb for the same price. Youtube had plenty of videos showing the process and drives that work in the ps5. No idea on x-box. With all of the models on the market I'm not even sure which one is their best next-gen that is comparable to the ps5. If you like racing Gran Turismo is an amazing game too.

Tks Sweed - I got the digital version. I'll try The Show soon enough, but my main interest is the PGA - I haven't played golf for about 3 years (I was a long time Links Player, with 2003 being last version, so it wasn't compatible when I got a new system).
I'm having a blast with the newest version which I purchased yesterday. My son is big Madden fan, so I'll get that eventually too. Other than that, I'm not much of a gamer. OOTP and FHM are it. Tks again for the feedback. |

Yeah, PGA 2k23 is good, EA Sports has a golf game too, officially licensed with Augusta if you have to play that course, amongst others. MLB The Show is as good as it's ever been. What other types of games are you looking at/interested in?
And I know it's late, but my argument for the disc version is the murkiness of digital (i.e. how having something physical can't ever be "taken"/revoked from you) |

I've got the Xbox Series X which is the next gen version of the console. The Series S is its little brother, still next gen but I think its minus the disc drive and a tad slower. Still a great unit but I went the whole hog.
Pretty sure The Show is available to me free on Gamepass but never yet tried it. Madden I've dabbled with but I'm not a pad expert so find it a bit fiddly. I'm determined to get fully into OOTP and doubt The Show can come close to the depth it has so I'll probably stick to the one game especially as I've bought a laptop especially for it.
