In my newly created game starting in 1871, one of my players has the first name "Crazy Pet."
One might ask, where does such a name come from? Did I make it up?
No. This is the
actual name of someone who lived in 1880. Crazy Pet was a Native American (who was also Hispanic). His name (and race/Hispanic origin) appears in the 1880 US Census. For my game, Crazy Pet was randomly selected from a set of about 250,000 names from the 1880 Census. You too can get such a name database!
I just posted information in "OOTP Mods - Names and Nations" information about getting the names of real people (along with their race and Hispanic origin) to use in OOTP:
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=355311
But this not a mod but, instead, directions about how to get US Census data that can be used in OOTP.
The process of getting Census data is straightforward. And if you know how to export/import player data in OOTP, integrating these names into your game is easy.
Or course, the vast majority of names one can get from the Census are not anything like "Crazy Pet." Most are Johns, Williams, and a smattering of Oles and Alfreds. But the names are names of real people from 1880 or what ever year you select.
