Cards news: August 17 -- Torn labrum ends season for Snell; Canterino will join rotation
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that left-handed starting pitcher Blake Snell will miss the remainder of the regular season after he suffered a torn labrum during a 7-6 loss to the Kansas City Royals on August 17.
Signed to a five-year deal worth $108 million prior to the 2024 season, the 33-year-old Snell has been a bit of a disappointment in his time with the Cardinals. This season, Snell has gone 4-11 in 24 starts with a 4.51 ERA. Snell is the third Cardinals player to suffer a season-ending injury joining outfielder Lars Nootbaar and starting pitcher Tink Hence. Overall, while with the Cardinals, he is 19-29 with a 4.07 ERA in 80 starts. It is expected to be four months before Snell can throw again. Getting the first chance to take Snell's spot in the rotation is right-hander Matt Canterino. Canterino, 28, has been a relief pitcher during his time in the majors. He came up with the Twins in 2024 before being acquired by the Cardinals via trade before the 2024 season. However, he did perform as a starter during his time in the Twins minor-league organization. This season, Canterino has appeared in 54 games and gone 6-1 with wo saves and a 2.96 ERA He also was named to the National League All-Star team. Getting called up from AAA is 24-year-old right-hander Tekoah Roby. Roby, who has pitched in one game for the Cardinals this season, dropping a decision in a 12-1 loss to the Mets on May 13, has pitched as a starter at AAA Memphis going 5-6 with a 6.41 ERA in 15 starts. |

MLB news: August 19 -- Cards' Charle and Twins' Buxton suspended for throwing down
Major League Baseball has suspended St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Sandi Charle and Minnesota Twins outfielder Bryan Buxton for two games apiece after a bench-clearing brawl in the eighth inning of the Twins' 15-9 win on August 29.
Charle hit Buxton with a pitch after giving up a three-run home run to Brooks Lee causing Buxton to pay a visit to the mound. Buxton had already homered three times in the first two games of the series. |
