Why can't you play a card while it is listed?

I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere but I am wondering what the logic behind this is?

When the card is listed you still own it. If I list my car for sale I can still drive it.

It's for your own protection. If you used a card you listed and it was sold your team would be instantly short-handed. No one can buy your car while you are driving it even if it is for sale.

If it sold while games were simming and you had no backup at that position, you (not you necessarily, but a lot of people) would scream bloody murder that their lineup was destroyed as a result because they didn't have the opportunity to replace him.
