Interesting Way to choose a Team
So I’ve contemplated on starting a new franchise in ver25 and decided to let a random number generator choose it for me
First I had to choose 6 teams and I had to choose one from every division. I could only select one from the bottom two in the divisions based on standings from 2023 The six I chose was Oakland, Kansas City, Washington, Pittsburgh, Boston, San Francisco I then assigned a number 1 thru 6 for each and generated a number between 1-6 100 times. The one with the most will be the team I choose to try and rebuild Results 28 Pittsburgh 20 San Francisco 14 Oakland 14 Washington 13 Boston 11 Kansas City Looks like I’m gonna be trying to rebuild the Bucs and get them to the promise land Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Couldn't you have just rolled a 6-sided die one time? The odds for each team are 1 in 6 regardless of if it's 1 dice roll or 100000 dice rolls.
I guess your way stretches out the suspense a little bit more though! ![]() |

Well….considering the first time it generated was Boston, over the next 99 times they were the fewest overall. I don’t think I got the first Pittsburgh number generated until the 5th or 6th roll.
It may be an even 1/6 chance for each but over 100 clearly it isn’t what gets defined Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Neither method favors any particular team, so either would work the same. If you enjoy generating random numbers, generating 100 random numbers is better than generating 1.

I use random generators for many, many things. And that would be the type of thing I use them for. I commend your patience to make the roll a hundred times. I personally would have entered each team in the list randomizer on random.org and hit the button 5 times (I always do 5 times) and pick the team that would have been at the top of the list.

I applaud you wanting to take a weaker (and in the case of the Pirates, undercapitalized) franchise and try to make it better. I have done this with the Rockies, A's, and KC for 2024. I would suggest giving yourself a break, and giving Pittsburgh a competitive payroll, and some money to invest on scouting and player development. You won't need Yankee-Dodger-Mets-Atlanta money; but trying to accomplish anything on the current Pirate budget is an exercise in futility. At least they have done a few long-term contracts; but good players still get away, due to money. All those trades to jettison big contracts. It would be nice to sign a **** free agent SP once in awhile. Still tough. It's a long way back.

Sample size is irrelevant in this case. Sure, any one of the six might end up the modal selection of a trial depending on the number of rounds you run (thus, A might be the most frequent after 1 round, C after 6 rounds, F after 10, A again after 20, etc.), but no trial length is “truer” than any other. |

Certainly. I did an A’s rebuild in ver23. First year was pretty rough I do like having Skenes with the Pirates. Will be interesting to see how he may develop. I was kinda pushing to see if San Francisco would win out, but Pittsburgh was probably my 2nd or 3rd choice. Should be a fun challenge Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by redranger; 04-08-2024 at 09:49 PM. |

I used to do this. I'd pick the 3 or 4 worst teams, assign them a number, and then let RNGesus decide.

What I've always done when starting a new "career" is choose from the jobs that are offered. Usually this means managing a minor league team, or being a GM in a indy league team or a foreign team. Then do the best job I can with what I get. At the end of each season I either get promoted if a minor league manager or choose again from offered jobs until a major league team offers a job. Usually after 2-3 season I get a major leage offer. Then take one of the offered jobs.

What I wish
I would love for OOTP to add a Random Management Generator.
I ALSO wish that in Historic Replay, That in an Expansion Year you could AUTOMATICALLY have at least one Expansion Team of that year have a Management Opening you could apply for. Quote:

I'm currently trying to rebuild the Angels. Picking a bad team and turning the franchise around is a fun way to play. In OOTP 24 I started the A's with a plan to jump teams once I won a WS. It took like 17 seasons, and then I jumped to teams that never won a WS, or hadn't won in forever (Cleveland). Once I did that, I expanded the league and took over an expansion team. I finished over 100 seasons before OOTP 25 came out.
It's a fun way to keep a single save interesting. In those 100+ seasons, the career SB, K, HR records fell. Hits came close, and I had 2 300 game winners. |

One thing I like about OOTP is player development. If you have the patience, and can plow some money into scouting, signing the best players (including international), and good coaching in the minor leagues, you will see results in time. The thing is, you need to be patient, over several seasons, to see these results. And it requires some attention to your minor league system. Like, for example, combing the minor league free agents, or indy leagues, for overlooked talent. Even when starting with a chronically weak organization, you can and will be rewarded for your time and attention. Eventually.

As a Cardinals fan I must say that if I had to bet I'd say the Pirates are closer to winning the World Series than the Cardinals are to winning a home post season game.
I really like the Pirate young guys and you have some arms ready to be dominant over the next 3-5 years. good luck!

I use a website that generates random MLB teams to do this same thing: https://www.randomlists.com/random-mlb-team
Otherwise, I'd be stuck in a rut picking the same handful of teams over and over again. |

I actually feel guilty when I pick a large payroll team at this point. Like I'm cheating. Of course, the Tigers are 'my team' so it's built in a bit.
I just ask AI to do this sort of thing now. Random numbers, review MLB standings from 2023 and pick one of the 4 worst teams. You can add weird modifiers to that. As an aside, Google's AI, at least the advanced one, knows all the intricacies to OOTP. How stats work, players are built, it's crazy it's like they trained it on this website. I've given it high level draft picks and asked it to give me a rationale for who I should choose using their potentials and details about my current team. You can also ask pretty much all the AI's to give you a 20/80 scouting report on any historical player, etc. Lots of fun baseball stuff. Last edited by Guthrien; 04-17-2024 at 08:44 AM. |

I use wheelofnames.com. Once you load the team names in, spin it 30 times eliminating one team each round until one remains. That's the one I go with. Creates a tiny bit of drama in the choosing.
