Doby Dominates in 6-1 Win over NL All-Stars
There's a whole lot of pride on the line when the best baseball players throughout Major League Baseball gather for the all-star game.
It was no different this year, as the AL bested the NL by a score of 6-1, in a spirited contest played at Briggs Stadium.
"It might be a little lower intensity than the regular season or playoffs, but everyone in that clubhouse still wants to win this game," said Larry Doby of the AL, who was named the game MVP.

All-Star Game MVP: CF Larry Doby (Cleveland Guardians)

1949 World Series results

1949 World Series: New York Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers

Results

Game 1, October 5th, 1949, Yankee Stadium
Road Win Lifts Brooklyn to 1-0 Lead in WS
When the games really matter, the Brooklyn Dodgers put on their best show, beating the New York Yankees by a final score of 11-9. Stan Musial was 1-2 with a double and 4 walks, while scoring 2 runs. Brooklyn now leads New York 1-0 in the best-of-7 affair.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Billy Johnson? The 31-year old first baseman Johnson stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning to put Brooklyn up, 10-9. For the game, he was 2 for 5, including 1 double and 1 single.
"Ugly win or not, we'll take it," said Musial.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York.
Dodgers lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 6th, 1949, Yankee Stadium
Brooklyn Tops New York Again, 3-0
The Brooklyn Dodgers got an exceptional performance from starter Hal Newhouser, who silenced the New York offense en route to a 3-0 shutout win in Game 2 of the World Series. The Yankees could never get a bead on the left-handed Newhouser, who threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. The Dodgers now hold a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-7 series.
Newhouser allowed no runs on 2 hits over 9 innings for the Dodgers. He walked 3 and struck out 4.
"There's nothing like the postseason," said Newhouser, "to ramp up the pressure."
Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
Dodgers lead series 2-0

Game 3, October 8th, 1949, Ebbets Field
New York Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 2-1
Already down in the World Series, the New York Yankees put on their best show, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers by a final score of 9-7. Andy Pafko was special. He went 3 for 3 with a home run, a double, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. New York now trails Brooklyn 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
New York won the game in part because of Duke Snider. The center-fielder ripped a 3-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Yankees ahead, 9-7. For the game, Snider had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.
"I'm really happy I delivered," said Snider. "The pressure is so high up there, it's indescribable. This is the World Series."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
Dodgers lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 9th, 1949, Ebbets Field
Almost There: Brooklyn On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 4-3 Win
With starter Dale Jones leading the charge, the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees, 4-3, in Game 4 of the World Series. The right-hander threw 7.2 innings allowing 3 runs at Ebbets Field to help Brooklyn take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Brooklyn took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Jim Hegan hit a clutch 2-run home run to bring Dodgers fans to their feet.
"We don't have much margin for error now," Yankees manager Doc Martin said. "We need to figure out the problem and fix it, immediately."
Dodgers win 3-1

Game 5, October 10th, 1949, Ebbets Field
New York Wins to Cut Brooklyn Lead to 3-2
Facing elimination, the New York Yankees were looking for a savior. For today, at least, Billy Pierce delivered.
At Ebbets Field, the 22-year-old pitched a game for the ages to fend off the Brooklyn Dodgers and help the Yankees close their deficit in the World Series. Pierce threw a 9-inning, complete-game shutout in the 4-0 New York win, striking out 4 and allowing 6 hits. The Yankees now trail 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Pierce went the distance for New York, allowing no runs on 6 hits, while striking out 4.
"A complete game shutout in the World Series?" an incredulous Pierce said to reporters after the game. "Man, my arm could fall off tomorrow and I'd be happy with my career."
Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Yankee Stadium in New York.
Dodgers lead 3-2

Game 6, October 12th, 1949, Yankee Stadium
Dodgers Triumph in 1949 World Series
It was all about winning for the Brooklyn Dodgers -- and win they did.
There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.
"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said center fielder Andy Pafko, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."
Brooklyn defeated the New York Yankees by a score of 5-4 at Yankee Stadium to take the series 4-2.
"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Brooklyn manager Jack Barry. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."
Dodgers win series 4-2

World Series MVP: CF Andy Pafko (Brooklyn Dodgers)
