1916 World Series results
1916 World Series: St. Louis Browns vs. Brooklyn Robins
Results Game 1, October 8th, 1916, Ebbets Field St. Louis Takes World Series Opener, 3-1 With pitcher Babe Ruth leading the charge, the St. Louis Browns got a road win over the Brooklyn Robins, 3-1, in Game 1 of the World Series. Ruth threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball at Ebbets Field to help St. Louis take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Ruth was effective for St. Louis, seldom allowing the Robins to square up a pitch. The left-hander tossed 113 pitches over 9 innings. He limited Brooklyn to just 1 run on 5 hits. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Browns manager Travis Helfrich said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Browns lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 9th, 1916, Ebbets Field Robins Clip Browns, 3-2, in WS Contest Behind a bravura effort from starter Joe Benz, the Brooklyn Robins topped the St. Louis Browns by the score of 3-2 and got their first win in the 1916 World Series. Benz threw 9.0 innings allowing 2 runs for the Robins. The win moves Brooklyn into a 1-1 tie with St. Louis. Larry Doyle, who finished 3rd in the AL in stolen bases with 34 in 1909, took St. Louis hurler Art Nehf deep in the bottom of the first. His 2-run home run put the Robins on top, 2-1. In all, Doyle had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4. "We're happy," Benz told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 11th, 1916, Sportsman's Park St. Louis Wins at Home to Take 2-1 Lead in WS Riding the 2-hit performance of third baseman Bobby Byrne, the St. Louis Browns stopped the visiting Brooklyn Robins, 5-2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Byrne was 2-2 with 2 singles and a walk, while adding 2 RBIs and scoring once for the Browns, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1. With the game tied in the bottom of the fifth inning, Byrne had a clutch at-bat. That's when he hit a run-scoring single to give the Browns a 2-1 lead. Robins manager Patsy Donovan did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Browns lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 12th, 1916, Sportsman's Park Almost There: St. Louis On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 6-4 Win Riding the 3-hit performance of shortstop Bob Fisher, the St. Louis Browns stopped the visiting Brooklyn Robins, 6-4, in Game 4 of the World Series. Fisher was 3-4 with 3 singles, while adding 2 RBIs for the Browns, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 1. Fisher had an important at-bat with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, when he hit a 2-run single. The Browns went on to win. "We aren't quitting," Brooklyn manager Patsy Donovan said. "Yeah, the odds are definitely in their favor, but they've got to earn it." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Browns lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 13th, 1916, Sportsman's Park Browns Triumph in 1916 World Series It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious St. Louis Browns, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy. The Browns took a 6-5 victory over the Brooklyn Robins at Sportsmans Park, winning their 2nd championship after taking the series 4-1. "We've got grit," said Browns first baseman George Sisler, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to." The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 97-57 record. Browns win series 4-1 World Series MVP: 1B George Sisler (St. Louis Browns) |

1917 World Series results
1917 World Series: St. Louis Browns vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Results Game 1, October 7th, 1917, Sportsman's Park World Series Game 1 Victory for Ruth and St. Louis The St. Louis Browns powered past the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, in the opener of the World Series at Sportsmans Park. St. Louis pitcher Babe Ruth threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Browns now lead the series 1-0. With scoring opportunities rare, the Browns had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fourth, when center fielder Cy Williams hit a run-scoring double. The double came off Jesse Barnes and made the score 3-0, Browns. Williams was 1-3 with a double. "We're happy," Ruth told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Browns lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 8th, 1917, Sportsman's Park St. Louis Hands Philadelphia 6-3 Loss Riding the 4-hit performance of center fielder Cy Williams, the St. Louis Browns stopped the visiting Philadelphia Phillies, 6-3, in Game 2 of the World Series. Williams went 4-5 with 4 singles. He drove in 2 runs for the Browns, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0. The game turned with one out in the bottom of the fourth. That's when Williams hit a run-scoring single off Bob Steele. It propelled the Browns into the lead, 4-3. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Browns manager Travis Helfrich said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia. Browns lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 10th, 1917, the Baker Bowl Philadelphia Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 2-1 The Philadelphia Phillies have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading St. Louis Browns, winning, 7-1, at Baker Bowl. Phillies right-hander Fred Toney threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The win cuts the deficit facing the Phillies to 2-1 in the best-of-7 World Series. Toney went the distance for Philadelphia, allowing 1 run on 7 hits, while striking out 3. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Toney said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia. Browns lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 11th, 1917, the Baker Bowl Almost There: St. Louis On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 5-2 Win Riding the 2-hit performance of pitcher Babe Ruth, the St. Louis Browns got a road win against the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-2, in Game 4 of the World Series. Ruth threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball for the Browns, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 1. With the game tied, 1-1, in the top of the sixth, Ruth had a key at-bat for St. Louis. With the bases loaded, Ruth hit a bases-clearing triple off Jesse Barnes, making the score 4-1, Browns. Phillies manager Tom Loftus did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia. Browns lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 12th, 1917, the Baker Bowl Browns Take Title The St. Louis Browns are champions, today and forever. The Browns topped the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 at Baker Bowl today to claim the World Series crown. "Nobody can take this away from us, not ever," said series MVP and center fielder Babe Ruth after his club had sealed the victory. "We worked hard and we accomplished our goal." The atmosphere was electric as the newly-crowned champs stormed the field at the conclusion of the game. Fans cheered, gloves flew in the air, high fives and hugs were the order of the day. "From day one of spring training, I could see it in their eyes," said St. Louis manager Travis Helfrich. "The players had that look of intensity, of hunger, of a desire to accomplish something great, and today they did that. They're champions of the world." The Browns took the series 4-1. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 94-60 record. Browns win series 4-1 World Series MVP: CF Babe Ruth (St. Louis Browns) |
