1907 World Series: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Cincinnati Reds

Results

Game 1, October 9th, 1907, Columbia Park
Road Win Lifts Cincinnati to 1-0 Lead in WS
The Cincinnati Reds started the World Series in style, winning on the road against the Philadelphia Athletics at Columbia Park by a score of 5-3 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Reds center fielder Sam Crawford excelled. He was 4-5 with a triple and 3 singles. He scored 2 runs.
Crawford had an important at-bat with runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the eighth, when he hit a run-scoring single. The Reds went on to win.
"Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Crawford after the game.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Columbia Park in Philadelphia.
Reds lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 10th, 1907, Columbia Park
Raucous Columbia Park Crowd Propels Athletics to 6-2 Victory; Series Tied at 1
The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 6-2, in Game 2 of the World Series. Making an impact was first baseman Harry Davis, who went 4 for 4 with a double and 3 singles, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. The win moves Philadelphia into a 1-1 tie with Cincinnati in the series.
Harry Davis, who finished 2nd in the AL in hits with 195 in 1903, made a major impact for Philadelphia. He had 3 singles and 1 double, plus 3 RBI.
"We lost," Cincinnati manager Whitey Ritterson said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati.
Series tied 1-1

Game 3, October 12th, 1907, Palace of the Fans
Athletics Hammered by Crawford, Drop Game 3 to Reds
When the games really matter, the Cincinnati Reds put on their best show, beating the Philadelphia Athletics by a final score of 8-7. Sam Crawford was 4-6 with a home run, 3 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Cincinnati now leads Philadelphia 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 13th inning, when Cincinnati right fielder Danny Moeller, facing Ed Willett, had a run-scoring single. It gave the Reds the 8-7 win.
"They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Crawford said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati.
Reds lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 13th, 1907, Palace of the Fans
Philadelphia Win Evens Series at 2
Trailing by a game in the World Series, Eddie Plank was ready for his start.
The left-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Palace of the Fans, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Philadelphia Athletics to victory in Game 4 of the World Series. Plank held the Cincinnati Reds to 2 hits and no walks, while striking out 5. The win brought Philadelphia into a 2-2 tie in the best-of-7 series.
Philadelphia starter Eddie Plank was masterful. The left-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits over 9 innings.
"We're happy," Plank told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati.
Series tied at 2-2

Game 5, October 14th, 1907, Palace of the Fans
Road Win Lifts Philadelphia to 3-2 Lead in WS
With second baseman Nap Lajoie leading the charge, the Philadelphia Athletics got past the Cincinnati Reds, 9-5, in extra innings in Game 5 of the World Series. Lajoie went 4-6 with a double and 3 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 at Palace of the Fans as Philadelphia managed to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series.
Had Lajoie not come through in the top of the tenth, who knows how the game would've ended? But with two down, Lajoie hit a run-scoring single. The Athletics took the lead, 6-5, and never looked back.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Philadelphia manager Connie Mack said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Columbia Park in Philadelphia.
Athletics lead series 3-2

Game 6, October 16th, 1907, Columbia Park
Philadelphia Wins World Series Crown
It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Philadelphia Athletics, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy.
The Athletics took a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Columbia Park, winning their 1st championship after taking the series 4-2.
"We've got grit," said Athletics first baseman Harry Davis, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to."
The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 103-51 record.
Athletics win series 4-2

World Series MVP: 1B Harry Davis (Philadelphia Athletics)

New York Hexed: No-Hit by Bailey
Bill Bailey really did a number on the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds -- and that number was zero.
The Brooklyn Superbas hurler had what he later called "one of the best moments of my life," tossing a no-hitter and leading the Superbas to victory, 7-0.
"This is something special," Bailey said. "I knew from the fifth inning that I had a no-hitter working. I tried to get it out of my mind, but you just can't. They have too many scoreboards in the park. They're everywhere you look."
The left-hander faced only 29 batters in the no-hit gem, struck out 3 and walked 1.
"We simply couldn't get any wood on the ball," New York manager George Davis said when asked about the epic performance. "Bailey was brilliant out there. He certainly had our number."

Hit #2,000 for Doves' Tenney
Boston's Fred Tenney collected his 2,000th career base hit, but New York collected the win. The Giants ruined his special day by knocking off the Doves 1-0. The 36-year-old first baseman reached the milestone by going 3-for-4 in the game.

Young in Command, No-Hits Browns
It was a terrific day for Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox at Sportsmans Park. The right-hander stood out with a fantastic 5-0 no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns.
"I knew I had a no-no going in about the sixth inning when I noticed no one was talking to me anymore," he said, referring to the time-honored superstition of avoiding the pitcher so as not to jinx the no-hitter. "Don't let people fool you. Everybody on the field and in the ballpark knows what's happening. They just pretend they don't."
For the game, Young totaled no walks and 4 strikeouts in a very strong outing.
"His mechanics were perfect, and I don't think he threw one bad pitch in the whole game," Boston manager Bill Shettsline said. "He was that good."

1908 World Series results

1908 World Series: Cleveland Naps vs. Brooklyn Superbas

Results

Game 1, October 11th, 1908, Washington Park
World Series Game 1 Victory for Smith and Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Superbas started the World Series in style, downing the visiting Cleveland Naps at Washington Park by a score of 9-2 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Superbas right-hander Frank Smith threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball.
Smith pitched a complete game for Brooklyn. The 28-year-old right-hander was charged with 2 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 5 during his 113-pitch performance.
"Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Smith after the game.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Washington Park in Brooklyn.
Superbas lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 12th, 1908, Washington Park
Naps Clip Superbas, 6-5, in WS Contest
The Cleveland Naps went the distance and then some at Washington Park to drag themselves back into a tie with the Brooklyn Superbas.
It took 10 innings to settle Game 2 of the World Series, but Cleveland eventually took the 6-5 win behind the efforts of pitcher Ed Walsh. Walsh threw 9.0 innings allowing 5 runs to aid the Cleveland cause. The clubs are now tied 1-1 in their best-of-7 series.
The result might have been different, had it not been for 31-year-old second baseman Jimmy Williams. Williams had a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth inning to put the Naps ahead, 6-5. For the game, Williams had 1 double and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
"We're happy," Williams told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
The next game is set to be played for October 14th, 1908 at League Park in Cleveland.
Series tied 1-1

Game 3, October 14th, 1908, League Park
Cleveland Wins at Home to Take 2-1 Lead in WS
Hooks Wiltse pitched a gem to help the Cleveland Naps escape with a tight, 2-1 victory over the Brooklyn Superbas in a low-scoring World Series contest. The left-handed Wiltse threw 9.0 innings of 5-hit ball in the win, just enough for the Naps on a day when their offense dried up. Cleveland now leads the best-of-7 series 2-1.
Wiltse went the distance for Cleveland. He allowed 1 run on 5 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 3.
"We lost," Brooklyn manager Patsy Donovan said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland.
Naps lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 15th, 1908, League Park
Brooklyn Win Evens Series at 2
Frank Smith went the distance at League Park to drag the Brooklyn Superbas back to parity with the Cleveland Naps. The right-handed Smith needed 117 pitches to get through the complete game effort, which the Superbas won, 4-0. The clubs are now tied 2-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Smith earned the win, going 9 strong innings for Brooklyn. The right-hander allowed just 2 hits, while striking out 7. Cleveland hitters had little success against him.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Brooklyn manager Patsy Donovan said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland.
Series tied 2-2

Game 5, October 16th, 1908, League Park
Road Win Lifts Brooklyn to 3-2 Lead in WS
When the stakes were high, Bill Bailey raised his game to match.
The left-handed Bailey turned in a stellar performance in Game 5 of the World Series, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Brooklyn Superbas to victory. He allowed 4 hits and struck out 4. The win gave Brooklyn a 3-2 lead over the Cleveland Naps in the best-of-7 series.
Bailey was in the zone all game. He frustrated Cleveland hitters while giving the Superbas 9 innings of quality work. Bailey threw 121 pitches, allowing 4 hits and getting 4 punchouts.
"Every team in baseball loses," Naps manager Robby Sorensen said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday at Washington Park in Brooklyn.
Superbas lead series 3-2

Game 6, October 18th, 1908, Washington Park
Naps Win to Tie Series with Superbas
The Cleveland Naps and the Brooklyn Superbas will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation, the Naps beat the Superbas, 3-1, at Washington Park to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Cleveland left-hander Hooks Wiltse had a big role in the win. He threw 9.0 innings allowing 1 run.
Heinie Zimmerman came through with a big-time hit for Cleveland. The pinch hitter smacked a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give his team the lead, 3-1. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
"Coach said he wanted eight innings, so I decided to do him one better," Wiltse said later.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Washington Park in Brooklyn.
Series tied 3-3

Game 7, October 19th, 1908, Washington Park
Brooklyn Triumphs in World Series
The Brooklyn Superbas pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the World Series in a hard-fought series with the Cleveland Naps.
It was a seesaw affair, but with a 3-2 victory at Washington Park, Brooklyn lay claim to the franchise's 1st championship.
"There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Frank Smith. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today."
The champs finished the regular season 98-56 and claimed first place in the NL.
A victory parade is set to be scheduled in Brooklyn in the days to come.
Superbas win series 4-3
